  1. I haven’t been able to read Aether of Night yet, but I’m curious if we know of other Aethers besides Crimson, Rosite, Sunlight, Zephyr, Midnight, and Verdant?

spoilers for the Lost Metal and Tress:

    Spoiler

Also, do we know why Twin Soul survived for so long and Captain Crow was terminal? Like what was the difference there?

  2. Spoilers for Oathbringer below.

on page 1099 in my hardcover version:

“The air around Venli - once crowded by the spirits of the dead - was now empty save for the single black figure of swirling smoke. She’d missed that one at first, as it was the size of a normal person. It stood near Odium, and she did not know what it represented.”

    ...(conversation between Venli & Odium)...

“She swallowed, then started hiking toward the city. The dark spirit followed, the one of swirling mists, the last who had yet to inhabit a body.”

Dalinar mentions the spirit on page 1121 as well, as he speaks to Odium through Venli.

So, does anyone know what - or who - this spirit is?

Honestly, at the rate the CGI is improving, we probably only need to wait 10 years for a "live action" version of the Cosmere that doesn't even require real actors. All they need is Andy Serkis in a mocap suit playing all of the characters himself.

On the animated front, I've never liked Japanese animation. Something about it just doesn't work for me. If they wanted to try something like the Batman animated movies, I would be on board (though I would still prefer live), but I don't wanna see Vin with little hearts floating out of her eyes when she looks at Elend.

I agree that a more serious style would be better. Something like Death Note or a Studio Ghibli inspired style would be better opposed to a sillier anime.

I mostly agree. I have watched and liked Avatar, but the rest of the anime shows I've seen have not been my cup of tea. I would be fine with a show that has an anime art style (animated characters and places) without all the extra baggage (like your example).

I was thinking animation more like Castlevania/Avatar when I made this video. I would also enjoy the Batman: the killing joke style! No Anime style hearts, eyes, or screaming your attacks before you fight.

    STUDIO MIR!!

The Cosmere could also take a Star Wars approach, where certain aspects from the live action stuff go to the animated shows, and vice versa. So he could keep Mistborn as live action movies that, while based on the books, are different, and then he could do Stormlight as an animated show and then market the crossover ability of the two. Warbreaker could be either-or. Novellas like Silence and Sixth of the Dusk would do well in an anthology-like show (not sure if animated or live action). Just imagine it - students from the academy in Silverlight head over to the nearest bar/tavern to blow off some steam, where they see a mysterious traveler. They pay for the traveler's drinks, and in turn he tells them stories from places in the Cosmere he's visited.

Wow, I was thinking in either/or the whole time, that’s a fantastic idea!

  5. So I’m doing a relisten of the well of ascension audiobook, and in chapter 24, it says “she[Vin] had asked Clubs to burn bronze, and he had claimed to hear nothing from the north. Either he was the Kandra, lying to her about his ability to burn bronze, or Vin could hear a rhythm that nobody else could.”

clubs is a smoker, and burns copper, so this is an error obviously, (and I’ve never found an error like this before, so I’m pretty excited).

(It made me think of the DND 5e magic system where you pick which spells you want prepared every day, and how it would be cool if mistings could change their ability every morning, but could never have more than one).

Anyways, anyone else find any interesting errors like this in the books?

  6. I’m trying to compile a list of all the worldhoppers that have been shown to us so far in the Stormlight Archive. This is spoilers for all of the cosmere, FYI.

Here is who I have so far:

    Hold: the beloved trickster

Demoux: originally from Scadrial in the first epoch. Appears in the WoK interlude “ishi”. Chasing Hoid.

Galladon: An Elantrian and friend of the king and queen of Elantra’s.  Appears in the WoK interlude “ishi”. Chasing Hoid.

some dude from white sand (the only Sanderson I haven’t read in its entirety) Is also with Demoux and Galladon in the WoK interlude “ishi” chasing Hoid.

Swordmaster Zahel: most people know this is Vasher from Nalthis, the world in Warbreaker.

Nightblood: the sword of black smoke, crafted by the five scholars.

Vivenna: Abdicated queen of Idris, Highmarshal Azure, chasing Nightblood(?)

Mraize: not much known. Has trophies from all over including a bird from “Sixth of the Dusk”

Iyatil: From Scadrial, second epoch, one of the masked hunters.

Mrall: pretty sure he is a Kandra from Scadrial. WoB (IIRC)

Khriss and Nazh: This is a theory, hoping someone can confirm or deny; They are disguised as Ardents in Dalinar’s court - the young female ardent that talks to Navani on top of the scaffolding overlooking the “floating tower” fabrial experiment in WoR.

the lighthouse keeper: in Oathbringer, the lighthouse keeper curses, “merciful domi!” Showing that he is from Sel.

Felt: guides Dalinar to other Valley” in Oathbringer. He is originally from Mistborn epoch 1, a house spy for the Ventures.

Thats all I have so far! Please add or correct or offer theories! Thanks everyone!

  7. Beware some mild to moderate spoilers ahead. If you don't want to have anything spoiled you can stop watching at 4:30 and you will not have anything spoiled for you!! If you are new to our channel, welcome. If you are new to Brandon Sanderson, we are really excited that you are here! There is a reason that he is Peter and Trever's favorite author, and in this episode (which we promise we tried to keep short) we explore some of our favorite quotes by the great Brando Sando as well as some of the reasons that we have chosen him to explore fantasy characters and how they relate to us as real-life people. We hope that you enjoy this video whether you have read all of his books or this is the first time reading him.

I’ll never understand “He didn’t go to Mare, He’s selfish” argument. If someone loses a loved one, are they selfish for not killing themselves to join them? Kelsier learned that there actually is an eternal afterlife, and decided to explore this world for a little while longer. Seems pretty normal to me.

I understand what you're saying - I don't think this would've applied if he was alive, not at all!
But he had DIED. It was his time to go and he fought it - he even questions it in Mistborn: Secret History when he asks Sazed about the Beyond.

I guess this is more personal, but from my point of view - having seen family members pass away - when the end arrives, their acceptance of it brought a lot of peace, and they were excited to see their love again. But again, my opinion on the topic.

You are probably right that it is not a good example to point to as him being selfish, I guess instead I will reference the entire Final Empire book. He always puts himself first - no by putting others beneath him, he does not belittle or hurt others - he just "looks out for #1"

    Kelsier: Dustbringer--agent of "divine" destruction.

This is probably the most likely in my eyes - dealing out justice as he sees fit - destruction and death are allowed when it means that a moral justice (not law) has been served.

I could see Kelsier as an Elsecaller, the way how he thinks all nobles are guilty and deserve to die reminds me of how Jasnah justified killing the thugs.

I could get on board with this order, but I still think this order is too neat and orderly for him. I would hazard a guess and say if he was an Elsecaller, his Spren would have to be corrupted.

Kelsier is too selfish to be an Edgedancer.

SPOILERS FOR MISTBORN: SECRET HISTORY AND PROBABLY ALL MISTBORN AND STORMLIGHT

I know this post is like 2 years old now but meh, still gonna comment.

I've been doing some digging regarding who Kelsier is as a person, and how that affects which order of Knights he would be a part of.

    The biggest things I've come to understand about him are;
    1) He is selfish (Puts himself above others except at very specific moments)
    2) He is proud (believes he is in the right)

In Mistborn: Secret History, Vin confronts Kelsier and asks him to consider "How much of what you've done was about love, and how much was about you proving something?" (quote shortened) "... I don't know." He said to her." [Arcanum Unbounded, pg 358]   -  This more than any other quote shows Kelsier's selfishness
Oh also, when given the chance to join Mare in the Beyond, he decides to become a cognitive shadow instead - so much for doing it all for love.

His abuse of his powers to push and pull on emotions
It happens constantly throughout Mistborn: Final Empire. He pursues things to his own gains. He abused Sazed's knowledge of Religions, fooled the whole crew, lied to Vin about important things, kept his plans secret.

These two aspects of his personality makes me want to put him in either the Dustbringers of the Elsecallers.

If a member of the Elsecallers however, I would say his Spren would probably have to be corrupted. I don't see he and Jasnah getting along very well at all.

  10. Spoilers for The Mistborn Books and Stormlight Series will pervade this thread.

So this is not a fully flushed out theory - it's actually more of an idea - but can Kandra worldhop?
They're spiked, and therefore tied to Harmony, but does that mean they can't leave their planet?

If they can worldhop, do you think we've seen any Kandra on Roshar and not known it?
Personally, I am hopeful to see Tensoon return as Kelsier at some point. (Different theory here: unless, do you think a Kandra sacrificed themselves and let Kelsier Spike his soul to their body using his original bones in order to have a physical form again? This is the only explanation I can think of that would lead to Kelsier having his scared arms at the end of bands of mourning).

If you would like thoughts on how Jasnah would potentially respond to some of these questions, check out my thread "jasnah more than meets the eye". I have almost every single quote that involves her across Way of Kings and Words of Radiance. So if you so choose, you could ignore my commentary and just use it as a reference for scenes with her.

I went looking for the thread but couldn't find it (Still pretty new to this site) do you have a link?

  12. My friend Trever and I do a weekly show on youtube (and as a podcast) and Trever is in his Master's Program for Clinical Mental Health and Counseling, and we did an episode on Kelsier a couple weeks ago, I think maybe we can add some good knowledge to this already wonderful discussion.

Okay, I've refined the theory and now I feel it works better with the timing question: It's all about the Atium baby!

Others smarter than me have pointed out that the current series is set almost perfectly for the reappearance of Atium on Scadrial.

Given that this is Brandon "there's always another secret", this strikes me as a clear Chekov's Gun.  Why would this be mentioned, and the next series be set ~300 years after the Catacendre unless this promise was about to be fulfilled.  And the last book being titled "The Lost Metal" and Kelsier's being teased at the the very end of the previous book, it all points to a confluence.

We've never had a situation quite like Kelsier's before, a human becoming a cognitive shadow, then jumping into a new body for long term use.

I thought that Atium was only being created as Ruin tried to get past Preservation's bonds? Since the Well of Ascension is now gone, wouldn't that mean Atium has stopped in its production?

Different theory as to why atium doesn't exist - it was ATIum - meaning it came from Ati (Ruin's vessel). Now that Ruin and Preservation are Harmony, wouldn't a new metal coming into existence be the expected result?

I may be way off base, its been 2 years since I read the series, so correct me if I'm wrong!

Yeah, he isn't always clued in to all the secrets. Like he didn't think the Unmade were ever made to begin with before Oathbringer, but the Sja-Anat says they were Made and then Unmade.

Reading back over his introduction I don't see any indication that he really looks Thaylen. Specifically, he is never said to have the goofy long eyebrows that can be combed back behind their ears. Dark hair, scarred mouth and fingers, violet eyes, that's about it. He uses a Thaylen term for master, but that's the only Thaylen connection. He would have a harder time pretending to be a Sadeas house guard in Oathbringer if he looked that Thaylen.

We know very little about him. I had forgotten that Mraize isn't even his name it is a title. "I am called Mraize" the man said "You may use that title for me."  - WoR Ch. 43

    EDIT Mild WOT Spoiler:

      Reveal hidden contents

Mraize reminds me of M'hael. Similar name, they look similar and both were not technically the top of their organization, but they totally act like they are the boss. Both are helping a hero for now, but they are clearly untrustworthy

I think he's a dragon because his mouth and fingers are all messed up and dragons typically fight with their fangs and claws. The other weapon they use is their breath weapon and he was always playing with that blowgun. Like oral fixation, except breath weapon fixation.

I thought the Hunter/Prey talk was from being a dragon, but it's probably from Iyatil being descended from Scadrial Hunters. https://coppermind.net/wiki/Iyatil

I was at a book signing in Denver, Co November 2018 and I got to ask Brandon about Dragons I don't have a perfect memory for my question, but I remember his response pretty well:

Me: Given that we know dragons exist within the Cosmere, have we met any dragons yet? Have any of our main characters been around dragons?

Brandon: Hmmm... I might RAFO that... (thinking pause) ...what I will say that there are some dragons who have been active throughout the Cosmere.

Not a confirmation to your idea, but there you go.
