Its funny how you can read a book a few years later and have a completely different experience with it. Reading the the Powder Mage books (currently almost done with The Crimson Campaign) by Mcclellan and having a blast with them. I had previously given up after the first one. The writing, pacing, and dialogue reminds me a lot of Sanderson. I guess I'm technically listening to them and the narrator (first time I've heard of him) is doing a fine job as well.

I believe McClellan was once a student of Brandon's at BYU.

  2. I've finished Mort. The plot was a little unfocused which led to a weakish conclusion but that hardly matters. The characters were all very likeable and it was (of course) well written with some wonderful jokes. Anything with Death is a pure delight. (A sentence I didn't expect to ever need to write.)

I'm continuing Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell. It's such a wonderfully crafted story.

Furthermore, I'm partway through Slaughterhouse 5, it's a little out of my usual choice of reading but it is truly phenomenal.

Apparently I'm a "senile old fan" for not having absolute trust in Marvel's storytelling.  As a matter of fact, yes, I do think the resolution to Age of Ultron was really unsatisfying, (and frankly that Vision's entire character has been badly done in the MCU).  And, incidentally that's a big reason why I don't have absolute faith that Marvel is not going to do basically the same thing this time.  Again, I'm not saying they're definitely going to screw it up, I don't have a crystal ball.  All I said is "if they resolve it this one particular way, I think that would be a bad resolution".

But please keep going, it sure is fun having a discussion where if you say any negative thing you're accused of being sexist. It's not toxic at all.

My apologies, It was not my intent to suggest you (or any other fan) was at fault. If I have caused any offence the fault is upon me. Your opinions are your own and you have every right to be concerned about how Endgame will resolve. I'd forgotten about the Deus Ex Machina at the end of Age of Ultron so Marvel isn't unfallable :). I agree Captain Marvel's release is timed poorly, all I meant to suggest was that I'd assumed that the writers at Marvel would understand the basic concept of conflict enough and wouldn't go over the same mistakes. Looking back over the my previous post I can see how poorly worded it was.

I hope we can resume discussing this movie without anyone feeling anyone else is slinging metaphorical chull dung at one another*.

    Again, sorry!

*Did that sound corny? I'm not used to talking on the internet. ;)

And I'll especially be pretty frustrated if the movie boils down to "and then Captain Marvel shows up and saves everyone", not because I have any particular beef with Captain Marvel, but just because introducing a powerful character out of nowhere to defeat an antagonist is a really unsatisfying resolution.  I have a bit of trust that they won't do that... but it wouldn't exactly be the first plot misstep in a MCU movie.  (I think they tend to do a *great* job with characters, and just an okay job with plot)

I've personally never understood this concern people seem to have. I've always thought the directors and writers would be competent enough not just to use CM in this manner. My speculation is that in the end the gauntlet is given to CM for safekeeping, like Adam Warlock in Infinity GauntletCM established that Danvers can hold infinity stones.

    Vasher?
Do you want to destroy some evil?
Come on, let's go and slay!
    I never see you anymore
    Let me out the sheath
    It's like you've gone away
We used to be best buddies
    And now we're not
I wish you would tell me why!
Do you want to destroy some evil?
It doesn't have to be a person
    Shut up, Nightblood
    Okay, bye
Do you want to destroy some evil?
    Or Worldhop around the cosmere?
I think some company is overdue
    I've started talking to
    The carvings on the sheath!
    It gets a little lonely
    All these juicy souls
Just watching the hours tick by
    (tick-tock tick-tock tick-tock tick-tock)
Vasher, please I know you're in there
Evils are asking to be slayed
They say, "Destroy us" and I'm trying to
I'm right out here for you
    Just let me out
    We only have each other
    It's just you and me
    What are we gonna do?
    Do you destroy some evil?

Ever since the "Cosmere the Musical" thread, and the "Do you wanna kill some evil?" song parody, Nightblood has sounded like young Anna from Frozen

I personally always imagined a live action version.  What kind of animation style would you prefer?  Also even in animation making spren would be time consuming and expensive.  Another option is to make each book several movies but I do see the problem with that.  Finally perhaps if some other cosmere were adapted first and it gained a wider following they could get the momentum necessary to just break bank making the TV show.

I've always thought an anime style of animation would best fit the cosmere as a whole.

Warbreaker and Elantris as miniseries and Stormlight and Mistborn as tv shows. The use of animation could also better integrate the internal monologues which are so essential to the characterisation of Brandon's characters.

Yes animating Spren would be time consuming but I feel they'd feel better integrated into the world that way.

  7. Just came back from seeing the film, it was relatively enjoyable. Better than Aquaman certainly.

    Spoiler

It was interesting that Danvers could hold the Tesseract without burning up (and the cat as well it seemed). Perhaps at the end of Endgame she'll fulfil the role of Adam Warlock from the Infinity Gauntlet comic and become its owner.

I’ve been thinking of trying Pratchett. He sounds like an author I’d really enjoy.

Funnily enough, I've nearly just finished my first Pratchett book, Small Gods. It's a wonderful book.

I've also just finished The Gigantic Beard that was Evil. It may be one of the finest comics I've ever read, and I mean that unironically.

    I'd highly recommend both books.
