  1. You’re right, sorry, I completely didn’t consider that. At any rate, that’s not what I was talking about; Rashek and Vin we’re still completely human after taking the power, they didn’t permanently become a kind of energy-based being of the sort that a full Shard effectively is. Like I said, I’m talking more about a Shard turning someone permanently into a lesser version of themselves, not just temporarily allowing them to absorb their power and then use it. That is to say, permanently gift a portion of their power to the person that will never fade or be permanently used up.
  2. I only realized the unintended pun after I’d posted it. lol.
  3. Honestly, I don’t think that’s a big deal in this case. The real-world equivalent of the Alethi doesn’t explicitly come up in the books, only in WoBs, and even then, just giving Caucasian actors heavy spray tan would probably be sufficient. As far as the actual story goes, whether they have quasi-Asian eyes is a complete non-issue. I’ve always said that Manu Bennett would be perfect for the role of Dalinar.
  4. On a slightly related note, another thing I’ve kinda been pondering lately is whether it would be possible for a Shard to bestow a fraction of their power onto another person to make them ‘ascend’ to a state that might loosely be compared to an angel or archangel if we think of the Shard as being equivalent to God in this analogy? Something much greater than a sliver but still far less powerful than an actual Shard? For example, could Harmony, upon learning that he couldn’t bring Vin and Elend back to life in the Physical Realm, have offered to elevate their ghosts into subordinate deities to help him watch over Scadrial? Or if not them then the remaining members of the crew who hadn’t died?
  5. O Or, more likely, ending in both of them Ascending to become Unity.
  6. Jeremy Irons was perfect as Brom, I’ll give you that. But that’s about it.
  7. I don’t mind living in a world where in Eragon movie exists, as long as it’s a halfway decent one that actually merits the label. Unfortunately, even by the standards to horrible movie adaptations, Eragon was in a league all on its own, at least in part because the director clearly didn’t even read the book, and he basically admits as much.
  8. The first three Harry Potter films were good, but after that it completely went downhill.
  9. I just imagine Ba-Ado-Mishram or one of the other Unmade somehow blocking Kaladin from accessing his surge, so he has to improvise by having Syl transforming into a set of SylODM gear (that actually sounds wrong if you say it out loud) that he uses to zip around the city like Captain Levi.
  10. I guess that’s true. But if nothing else, I don’t see why Syl couldn’t turn into either a bow (string included) OR an arrow, even if she couldn’t be both simultaneously (although I can’t help but get a rather amusing image in my head of her transforming into a kind of Shard-harpoon bow, since technically the arrow is connected to the bow/gun itself by the cable. That’s be kinda funny.
  11. Isn’t perception most important though? I mean if we’re being technically, a spear or hammer or shield is several distinct things attached together (even a sword is a composite item), but it would still only have one soul in Shadesmar because that’s how people perceive it. Couldn’t it be the same with a Shardbow and Arrow? The only real difference is that the arrows aren’t in direct contact with the bow whereas a spear tip is in direct contact with the shaft. ’Bow and arrow’ could be argued as being a single concept.
  12. Yeah, unfortunately Kramer got a lot of things wrong, especially in the Elantris short story. Pronouncing ‘Sarene’ as ‘Sar-ene’ rather than the correct ‘Sar-ee-nee’ and ‘Raoden’ as ‘Row-den’ rather than the correct ‘Ray-oh-den’. But yeah, ‘dishardic’ was facepalm-worthy.
  13. It’s pretty interesting to speculate just how far it goes though. I mean the fact that how people think of something affects how it manifests in Shadesmar is common knowledge; that’s why Scadrial’s Shadesmar is misty, why Roshar’s consists largely of spheres, and presumably why Nalthis’ is composed of colours. And that’s not at all problematic since Shadesmar is basically ‘composed’ of perceptions in the first place. But saying that it also affects how it ‘manifests’ in the physical realm would seem to lead to a chicken or egg-style paradox, since in order to be able to think of something at all, you first need to see it, but how something appears is related to how it’s thought of. That’s the fatal problem with pretty much any non-realist metaphysics. So at some level, even the Cosmere must have some fundamental ‘essence’ or what-have-you that exists independent of any perception. The only question is what exactly that base level of reality is.
  14. It clearly isn’t ALL perception though. I’m pretty sure if you gave a blind tin-eye steel and told him it was tin, regardless of whether he sincerely believed it or not, he still wouldn’t be able to burn it. So the perception thing only goes so far.
  15. I stand corrected.
  16. Yeah, I think the Cosmere universe utilizes a kind of quasi-metaphysical idealist conception of reality wherein mind/perception is more fundamental than matter/energy. I don’t know if there’s an actual philosophical term for it, but definitely something leaning towards idealism or panpsychism.
  17. I have to believe that there’s at least some sort of connection there. I mean, Stormfather infuses gems, Dalinar is bonded to the Stormfather, Dalinar is now able to open a Perpendicularity that also infuses gems. That’s quite the coincidence. And it also makes sense given that the Stormfather absorbed a significant bit of Honor’s Investiture, so it might make sense that he might serve as a kind of ‘nucleation site’, so to speak, for Honor’s Investiture to congregate, which is how Perpendicularities form. That may even be why the Highstorms are so violent, because they’re indirectly fueled by a god’s power.
  18. Honestly, I don’t know about that. I haven’t actually gotten around to reading Warbreaker yet, I’m still getting through Era 2 Mistborn, so what I’m about to say may be just completely wrong, in which case please feel free to correct me and smack me upside the head, but from what I do know about Warbreaker’s magic system, it seems to me to be by far the most whimsical and the bad-fairytale-esque of all of them. I mean people ‘breathing’ in and out colours to enchant things? I can’t help but think that that would just look ridiculous in a visual format. I could be wrong though.
  19. So how does Honor’s Perpendicularity fit into it then? Surely Brandon isn’t implying that the Stormfather in some sense is the Perpendicularity, is he? Because I was under the impression that it was part of the Highstorms, and had assumed that that was what infused the gems.
  20. I never said that Mistborn wouldn’t need a big budget to be good, only that it wouldn’t need nearly as big of one as Stormlight would.
  21. I very much doubt that this is the case. First of all, the Stormfather doesn’t literally cause the Highstorms (he can, but usually they’re just a natural part of Roshar), he’s “just” their Spren. Second, even if what you just said were true, I hardly think that a few minutes less Highstorm every now and then would have any non-negligible effect on the ecosystem. Plus, considering the sheer amount of power he has, I wouldn’t be surprised if he was able to do both at the same time.
  22. Well it hurt him because Dalinar forced him to do it against his will. I suspect if Kaladin had done something like that with Syl the effect on her would have been much the same.
  23. I don’t think you’d need to go the anime route with Mistborn; there’s absolutely nothing in Mistborn that would require any more CGI than pretty much any superhero/supernatural series currently on TV. Stormlight is the one that would likely require a colossal budget, not Mistborn.
  24. Yeah. My point was just that the term ‘anime’ is very broad and can cover a wide range of quality.
  25. Well it is clearly at least theoretically possible for a Bondsmith to get a blade, since Dalinar essentially forced the Stormfather to assume a quasi-Shardblade-form in order to activate the oathgate in Thaylen City. So it’s clearly just the case that the Stormfather doesn’t want to become a Shardblade, not that he can’t. He has an ego the size of a Highstorm after all.
