  1. It was the Face's favorite, but also the therapist's.
  2. But the Face didn't care what others thought.
  3. And this would help him kill his therapist, who had located the pist.
  4. "I wouldn't be here if it weren't for the two of you." She chuckled. "Knives are fun, what can I say?"
  5. "Spiritual debates aren't enough?" Marie asked dryly. "In this group, talking religion is as fun as a knife in your back."
  6. Marie waved at Adilie as well, grinning like a shark, and then sighed at the other two. "There's more than one type of thief. We can agree, I think, on that?"
  7. "Yes. The rusting thief." Her nails dug into her palms.
  8. "Yes, that's what I just said..."
  9. "A giant mound of ash," she said roughly. "And the god of one of Scadrial's major religions."
  10. "Harmony," Marie said promptly, glad for something she was actually able to answer.
  11. Take you where Ett cannot reach... A few pieces snapped together in Marie mind, and she decided to mull that over later. She shrugged and smiled at Adilie. "Some people can't handle a simple conversation, I suppose."
  12. "Go for it," Marie said with a shrug. "I wouldn't stop you." "There are things I can't talk about," she said, struggling to find phrases she could slip past, and also struggling to remember what being polite looked like. "Your mother could tell you."
  13. Marie nodded at her. "I'd explain, but I literally can't, unfortunately." She glanced after Ladashwy, masking a smile. And that's two in as many minutes. Her lip curled. "A Marewill by any other name would be just as pretty and just as useless, as they say. I don't need the reminder."
  14. Marie laughed bitterly. "Someone gets it. Harmony does as he wills; he can say all he likes that Ruin and Preservation must be equal, but he has his own plans. Not that your cult leader's any different there - but you know that already." "Nothing!" Another laugh danced into the air. "Sure, human, nothing at all."
  15. "Some people don't trust people with spikes in them," Marie said as an aside to the girl. "We frighten them." "Why shouldn't you?" Marie said, letting hurt slip over her face. "Is it because -" I've been commanded not to hurt any of you, or because I have a god watching me? Her lips wouldn't move. She stumbled verbally for a moment before catching herself and snapping, "Because people had to die to create what I am?" It wasn't the sarcasm she'd meant to say. She hadn't really meant to say that at all; but she'd forgotten Adilie's order not to speak of the control and hadn't had a backup plan.
  16. Marie smiled. Arguments were almost as good as what she really wanted. "Do I need to be, Terriswoman? Who defines trust anyway? You can trust me to do plenty of things, and you can trust that I know secrets you and your scholars can only dream of."
  17. "I've lived longer than everyone here combined. You don't think I know what I'm talking about?"
  18. "And as we all know, that's the best way to deal with shock," Marie said innocently. "Let's do it."
  19. When she didn't say a word, Marie turned abruptly around, striding a few doors down to where Drae was dripping with water, a few others gathered by him. "What's going on over here?"
