How about this: I live with rich but I have not their wealth, I live with the talented but I have not their ability. To learn their secrets I carry their words around, and I tried to conceal the knowledge I have of them. I discovered a murderer in their ranks And, thought I was not alone in this, I triumphed his bests. English is not my first language, and writing something "poetic" is not easy, I hope its intelligible.

This is obviously Marsh.

Marsh a.k.a. Ironeyes?
-
Vasher?

Ops... You are right, I went by memory and mixed up the two phrases since they both come up in regard to Elkohar's assassination. @Slowswift: NO problem, I just wanted to know if there was something more to what you pointed out.

I don't get what it is that you are pointing it out. Yeah in WoK we see Kaladin's flashback of when Tien died and Kaladin hears that phrase from the officer who used him as bait, and then in WoR he remember those words when thinking about killing the king since they were very relevant to the situation. I don't get what's so special about it.

Nice analysis Blaze! After reading about the lawsuit i feared that the situation was about as you described it, but I hoped I was wrong. The thing that keep my hopes down is that, as you said, Harriet and Manetheren's statements are directly contradictory, and it seems to me that both of them have no reason to risk and lie about things in public statements. So if I had to bet on which one that made the literally true statement between: 1) a company who is in the middle of a legally legitimate but "morally" questionable move 2) a private citizen who maybe spoke in the heat of the moment. If think I would bet on the first one.

The more I read about this stuff the less I hold hope to actually see a live-action about WoT. Between the pilot itself and this lawsuit Red Eagle has thoroughly alienated the fans, so I doubt they are actually interested in producing something. On the other hand they are gonna hold tightly to the rights in order to make some money, so the situation could easily end up in a court of law and be stuck there for years. As far as I read the rights ofr adaptation of D&D and the Forgotten Realms are stuck in a similar situation. So I'm not the only one who find it strange to do that, good to know.

I had managed to remove that deatil from my memory... Dear Lord that name made me facepalm so hard... It doesn't help that I find that (mostly American I think) habit of calling children "something junoir" pretty cringeworthy in real life.

Reading the articles linked by WeiryWriter I had a thought, I don't know if it's good or bad: What if it was planned? Like someone said "there is no such thing as bad publicity" and you can't deny that the news of this orrible pilot has gone viral, so if they now came out with a good series lots of people would try to watch it. They would still be terrible people for exploiting their contracts this way, but hten they would get money and we a good series.

I have to admit, I went in expecting the worst and I found it to be just bad. Then I saw the "lightning" that I think was meant to be channeling, and things went generally downhill... I have no clue about the laws and regulations on these things, but I really hope that whatever they were hoping to accomplish by airing this thing gets rejected.

Argh, this doesn't bode well, if they just show this without advertising first I doubt it's gonna be much good. Never the less I'll need to watch it, if only so i can critic it legitimately later. I am also wondering this, does someone know the answer?

A couple idioms: please help a foreign reader
Topomouse replied to Monty Python's topic in Other Stories
I have to say I didn't notice that i was in the spoiler board either, but what I wrote gets explained in chapter 5, it's really the beginning of the story. I didn't think it would be much of a spoiler. -

I think the title refers to the technology that is the center of the plot that allows people to use their body as data storage. -
Lol. Yeah, I see what you mean, but it doesn't have gemstones apparently.

Series you were disappointed with...

Interesting discussion, here are my thoughts: When I re-read Mistborn a couple of months ago I was also surprised because the romance between Eland and Vin was way simpler than I remembered. Kinda like a YA novel if you catch my meaning. On the other hand, IMHO in Alloy of Law there wasn't much of a romance development. Marasi has a pretty big infatuation with Wax, but he didn't really reciprocate beyond considering her a good girl and sometimes seeing something of his dead wife in her. I really liked the ending where he decides to marry Steris, and I hope the sequel doesn't change everything about it. From the excerpt on the site Marasi certainly seems not to be over her crush. As for the Stormlight Archive, I really didn't see any love at first sight. When Adolin and Shallan meet I think they just found each other "hotter than hell", which is probably not a bad start for a relationship, but hardly a sure thing: Shallan had been living a very sheltered life until about a year before that moment and initially smitten with "Prince Charming" Adolin, but as the story proceeds she start to like the verbal sparring with Kaladin, so we will have to see how that will turn out in the following books. Adolin on the other hand seems to be taken with her, but apparently he also was with many other women before. During their courtship he starts appreciating her more but it was not really a love at first sight. I'm not gonna talk about Warbreaker because I don't want to spoil it for Pestis, and I have been wanting to re-read Elatris for a while, but I lost the book so don't have significative comments about it. -
Death Gate, so many memories... It was one of the first big fantasy I read and i still love it. Once I made the switch I could never go back: you get to have the books without waiting 6 extra months and you are safe from the terrible translator used in our contry. Me too! Among the Cosmere novels Warbraker is my favourite and I can't wait to read Nightblood.
-
Welcome! Get an upvote from a fellow Italian! The Cosmere is awesome in itself, but Rithmatist is probably my favourite among Sanderson's book, I think you will enjoy it. I'm a bit curious, did you read the book translated or in english?

You could argue that everyone is a Misting for Lerasium and its alloys.
-
Iirc it's almost like that, except that Malatium is already one of the sixteen alloys of Atium (precisely Atium+gold). Plus, I'm pretty certain that we have Word of Brandon that burning Lerasium with another metal creates a Misting of that metal instead of a full Mistborn, so you are right that could be their only use... If we stick to Allomancy. Think about how many uses they could have with Feruchemy and Hemalurgy!

Edit:I had opened another discussion a couple of minutes after Sparks, but it's better to have only one so I'll copy my post. Man, this book was good. I think I liked it more the Steelheart actually. I had spotted a couple of twist in advance, like Regalia's objective, but I certainly didn't expect her to try to make David an Epic. And neither her having such a direct contact with Calamity. As for the characters, I liked Missy very much, and compared to first book I found Megan way more likeable (I guess the power of love changed her), and I think a couple of David's metaphors, or similes, were actually good this time.

1)I guess you refer to the glyph of rending that is taught only when the rithmatist is in Nebrask: as I understood it, that one just enables chalklings to affect things different from chalk, it doesn't affect the other lines. 2)Again, I assume you are talking about tournament rules: If you are out of your circles you lose, whether by it be broken or moved by a line of vigor, so I think coming out by yourself would equal surrendering. I don't know what defence you are referring to, but I don't remember any with lines very far from the circle.
-
I also think Szeth would win, Stormlight is just so OP compared to the other magic systems. At the very least it gives you the equivalent of allomantic pewter and feruchemical gold(without having to store the health away), and then you have to add the surges themselves. Just OP.

As far as I know the defining characteristic of Light Novels is to be written with a very simple language (i.e. using only the most simple kanji) in order to reach the younger audience. Because of the target demographic they tend to have plot similar to our Young Adult genre and they often get transposed to manga and/or anime.
