@MechaBiollante And Dalinar's story was arguably one of my favorite things ever.

Yeah, for me it's why I feel like I may have read my favorite book ever written. Of course, the book doesn't exist without the two before it so I sometimes like to say favorite series at the moment, it's weird picking this as top book of the three when for Dalinar and many other aspects what made it so great was pay off for things culminating. Kinda like how anyone who claims Empire Strikes Back is the best Star Wars must have also loved A New Hope, if that makes sense.

Trying to pin this on a single character just doesn't work all that well for me.

Overall I'd have to say Dalinar... But it varies by book.

    TWoK

    1: Kaladin

    2: Dalinar

3: Shallan (trailing by a long shot)

    WoR

    1: Dalinar

2: Tie (Kaladin's depression was well represented and I love that... But it wasn't the most fun read, and at the same time, Shallan actually started to be interesting.

    OB

1: Dalinar again (because the dichotomy of Dalinar/Blackthorn)

2: Shallan (and she's not far from the top, because she's a storming train wreck and it was an amazing read)

3: Kaladin (because he was there... And that's about it)

Obviously these are all oversimplifications, and I like all three, save Shallan in tWoK.

I just can't pick a static favorite. The books are to complex for that.

For me in book 3 I thought they found the perfect way to emotionally cripple Kaladin, it was believable and heart-breaking and he still gets what was probably the best fight of the book (felt like some crazy chull anime fight, honestly). But then I'm really into Kaladin's emotional struggles, he struggles with questions I feel not enough fantasy heroes do, but that could just be the type of fantasy I read and I need to read more, hah.

By process of elimination he has to be the companion to Nale at the Prologue feast.

5 male Heralds. We know where Taln and Nale are, Jezrien is dead, and Ishar is Tezim.

That leaves one male Herald, and the things that Nale's companion says in Jasnah's Prologue heavily imply that man is a Herald.

Now I have to read that prologue again, without doing so did he seem like he'd be one of the sane ones? What do you guys think of Jezrien's end? Also should I have known who Jezrien was prior to that last scene, was he in the books being crazy and I just overlooked it?

  4. I found out that's a Warbreaker quote and I didn't read Warbreaker so I'd feel silly repeating it. Right now my favorite character is Dalinar but before book 3 it was Kaladin, with a book 4 it might be Kaladin again, I consider other characters to have potential but at this point it's hard to pretend there's another protagonist as important to the story as those two are.

  5. I guarantee I'm a fool for thinking this hasn't been discussed by you guys but we clearly know who some of the ten heralds are still existing but where is Kalak, the one who got a POV at the start of the franchise? Do you think that he's taken so long to be revealed has to do with the fact that he was the POV character for that prelude?

Bonus question for you guys, is anyone in the books so far a willshaper?

  6. Spoiler

For me, with Oathbringer considered, Dalinar is the better character. Kaladin is one of my favorite hero characters in a story, to be fair, he has depth and dimension but I wouldn't call him quite morally complex, maybe I'm being unfair to say that but to me Kaladin's struggles mostly have to do with the fact that he's SO moral and SO righteous which honestly is often a breath of fresh air to me. Dalinar started off as this righteous character who stuck to codes and wanted to make moral the immorality of war and of course there was talk of it being a different him but seeing exactly how far a different him went in Oathbringer was incredible. To be fair between both Kaladin and Dalinar the steps in their journey so far have embodied IDEALS and because of it both characters must live up to ideals at times, it's amazing the books can have characters who are both paragons of ideals and conflicted and believable but it does it. With Dalinar that he's done wrong becomes part of why it's so amazing he is as great as he is, because he becomes a better man every time.

Shallan is very different here, as I recall she had to admit a truth to move forward as a Radiant she didn't swear to an ideal. She has a Cryptic Spren and they are normally considered bad, at least by honor spren. While she needs to admit truths to move forward it's odd that in so doing she becomes able to weave better lies. As a character she's easily the darkest of the three and most capable of switching sides. While this could make her also the most fascinating character I feel like for now they're holding back a bit and to be fair my personal preferences in books like these are for battle, adventure, politics and not spying, illusions and romance. The climax of Oathbringer was least interesting when describing her role in it, it seemed like something that would work best on the big screen but on the page it was merely interesting as opposed to the awe Dalinar's stuff inspired or the excitement of Kaladin fighting Amaram. The love triangle didn't work that well for me, I was glad it feels like it already fell through because honestly it felt like a love triangle created by the fact she was the only other available female given a large role. Sure there are great female characters besides her but I can't even think of Jasnah interacting with Kaladin off the top of my head and Azure seemed too old for Kaladin and they didn't play with it. It's a very Star Warsy problem and one of the few silly things about such a large fantasy world that we've had no other woman to grab Kaladin's attention, I feel. Though, it's slightly nitpicky, I just tend to like more female representation, especially if they're going to be flawed/interesting like Shallan or Jasnah and not near Mary Sue's like in a certain other book series I just came down from. My other thing with Shallan is I often find her humor doesn't work, I try to think of it as part of the world created, like there's a really bad pun in Oathbringer Adolin groans over but she admonishes him for not admiring good puns and there was a time when puns were the height of humor in our own culture so I have to assume it's not entirely that Sanderson can't do humor but still I often find her stuff too "cute" in a story where I can somehow readily accept a character like Syl, somehow Syl doesn't cute/Disney it up too much for me, it's more like a nice balance to the dark stuff going on. That may feel like an inconsistent position but honestly bad humor makes me cringe worse than anything else.

I realized this isn't really a spoiler thread so I spoilered my long reply, the short answer is I actually think Dalinar right now is the best character because he's the most well rounded.

It's completely understandable that you're confused, and frankly, stepping into this writhing mass of speculation mixed with fact is daunting.

The biggest thing is that a large quantity of the knowledge that we have isn't available in the books. Their through the extensive number of WoBs (Word of Brandon) from Brandon's generous amount of information given in Q&As at signings, and on Reddit and Twitter.

The  yummy have things that are completely reliant on things we've learned through other books in the Cosmere. Characters have appeared as Easter eggs in SA, from. The original Mistborn trilogy, Warbreaker, Elantris, White Sand, and there's smaller bits connected to literally every series, even some unpublished.

Then you have the magic properties which we've gained bits and pieces of from all of the.

It's a daunting sea of information. Without digging into Arcanum, and being active within the community... If you'd picked up on all of I I'd call you a genius and ask for your take on just about everything.

We all started out just as lost. Welcome to the fold.

How crucial reading are the other books that sort of tie in that you mention?

  8. Well my other question is, how much time looking through old threads is required before deciding if your theory is worth posting for discussion? I suspect the stuff I want to theorize on is less in depth than the rest of you, like a thread near the top right now talks about Axies in Shadesmar and I don't even remember who Axies is, I looked it up and now SORTA remember. So it makes me wonder how worthwhile my own topics on theories would be and I've been on other forums where even if what you posted was posted before 50 pages deep you still should have looked through 50 pages for it, hah.

    Big question, bigger answer.

I suggest you look and the Coppermind first. It can answer names and places best. Nicknames are somewhat fun, but off putting for those not in the joke. I agree that long hand works best for communication. Another more in-depth source is the new data base of the Words of Brandon (WoB) at all the events. You can search words and topics there to get definitive answers. Finally, direct questions get the best results on the forums. Ask them. People here are nice and remember when it was all new to them. Trust them with your questions and they are very patient and helpful with direct ones. The rest will likely require some research in the two sources I mentioned. They were painstakingly crafted for just such questions.

Welcome to the Shard. Good luck. Journey Before Destination.

Ah, thanks for that, see I wasn't sure if entering discussions and asking people what all the things they were referring to were would be warmly welcomed or not. The way people talk in here I sometimes feel like I didn't fully follow the books, lol.

  10. Long time fan of the fantasy genre and I've found Stormlight Archive to be the best. I refused to join any online communities until I was caught up enough to avoid spoilers. Since I finished book 2 only in 2017 that left me waiting until I got through book 3. Book 3 is what solidified the series as my favorite. Sure it can go wrong, Wheel of Time certainly went wrong in many ways, A Song of Ice and Fire went dull for the last two books and I'm not done Malazan which could go BETTER than SA but at the moment I'm sure of how I feel. It felt like the right time to join one of these communities, unfortunately taking so long I feel so much like the outsider, people here talk about so many things I only sort of understood when reading the books, like I'm out of my league and depth. I do plan re-reads but even then I'm not sure my brain is prepared to make the connections others have. Really fascinating stuff.

  11. Now, this may come across as a weird thread to some but honestly I look at this forum and besides the thread for giving my reactions I'm a bit at a loss. I'm fully caught up with the series and would certainly entertain discussions and theories and such but most the discussions on here have me lost in the original post. The OPs often seem to assume I understand things already. Now, this is either the fault of my reading comprehension when reading SA or it's because I'm a new member to a large community that is having ever evolving discussions and there are things the group as a collective has decided that I have no clue on. Like, I will say totally legitimately speaking before finishing book 3 I never read a single word online about these books for fear of spoilers so for all I know people have already figured out all sorts of things I have no clue about. I was wondering is there a way to get a general feel for the information not clearly told to you in the books, the dots you're expected to connect, the characters who dart in and out of each book you're meant to remember?

I do plan to re-read all 3 but I was wondering if anyone felt like helping or some sort of guide already existed. I know certain terms I can simply look up but that's so much less exciting for me. I don't blame anyone though for feeling like I need to put in the effort myself and they don't feel like catching me up. I've read other fantasy series like Wheel of Time and A Song of Ice and Fire and with those I was active enough in the online communities I knew the big theories and big connections they had drawn, but to give an example looking at this thread for me would be like finishing book 5 of aSoIaF and then for the first time ever looking online and seeing thread topics with names like

    Spoiler

    R+L = J still not fully confirmed

and thinking WTF does that title even mean.

  12. My favorite book in the series so far and maybe my favorite book ever read, answers so much, has the absolute best climax and is breath-takingly well paced despite its length. I've never felt such awe reading a book as I did during the I AM UNITY moment, I seriously considered it possible he'd turn bad. When Evi forgives him I legit teared up. How can I possibly wait for more?
