  1. Optimism, as Shallan knows is essential to putting your life forward into the next possibility .... the future unrolls, even if we are only going into the past, looking for a keystone, or a moment to grasp for a different future for many, the past then unrolls across our backs ... and we call it the future . . . Positiveness succeeds . . If it is not mindless or based on sugar
  2. Oh, batten down the hatches! We just had 2 nights ---- zero degrees F warm, not, . . . 6" snow . . And then the mag-chloride .... seriously, no lie, I had to use a hand axe to get the build-up out of the front wheel wells, and the stuff which fell off the tail pipe area 2 days later was such a crash I flinched (after I tapped it by foot, so it would come off)!!! I had no idea stuff collected there, will give it a good wash when its safe to wash the car again (not yet). 3. Thank you as well, . . I have only 3 shorter books out, all first person naratives . . Well, very nearly ... action is mostly safe, I have a dickens of a time putting my characters into dangerous positions! . . I had no idea that authoring became something like a personal treck through the keyboard . . And yet it is fulfilling, it takes the edge off lonely, and it's actually fun . . However, I really have to add more sparkle, or something, (?) to my manuscripts ... and I presume this will be just the ticket! I was going to move to Utah, maybe take Brandon's class . . but it seems thar I will land in Sedona ... only a few hundred miles away, but I can't fly an ultra light, so Writing Excuses may have to suffice! Taravangian said. “Crude devices. There are legends of metal that can block a Shardblade. A metal that falls from the sky. Silver, but somehow lighter. I should like to see that, but for now we can use these.”

    Dalinar grunted.

“You know how they make fabrials, don’t you?” Taravangian asked. “Enslaved spren?”

“Spren can’t be ‘enslaved’ any more than a chull can.”
The Stormfather rumbled distantly in his mind.

“That gemstone,” Taravangian said, “imprisons the kind of spren that gives things substance, the kind that holds the world together. We have entrapped in that shield something that, at another time, might have blessed a Knight Radiant.”

I … I really can’t think about this right now.
“Excuse me,” Dalinar said, “I need to go check on Navani.”

A figure emerged from the battle. A tall, lean man—so, so familiar.

Gloom seemed to cling to Moash, who wore a brown uniform like the parshmen. For a heartbeat the battle pivoted on him. Wall Guard behind him, broken Palace Guard before.

“Moash, no…” Kaladin whispered. He couldn’t move. Stormlight bled from him, leaving him empty, exhausted.

Lowering his spear, Moash ran Elhokar through the chest.

    Kaladin screamed.

Moash pinned the king to the ground, shoving aside the weeping child prince with his foot. He placed his boot against Elhokar’s throat, holding him down, then pulled the spear out and stabbed Elhokar through the eye as well.

He held the weapon in place, carefully waiting until the fledgling glow around the king faded and flickered out. The king’s Shardblade appeared from mist and clanged to the ground beside him.

Elhokar, king of Alethkar, was dead.

Moash pulled the spear free and glanced at the Shardblade. Then he kicked it aside. He looked at Kaladin, then quietly made the Bridge Four salute, wrists tapped together. The spear he held dripped with Elhokar’s blood.

  8. Well, no guffawing, and not so very funny, but it warmed the cockles of my down trodden and suffering heart, that such a thing could find it's way out of the mouth of such a particularly intelligent character .... sometimes you have to stop worrying about the Hunters and just feel blessed that someone got the spren-gram.
  9. All spren are splinters of life, but "some" large & ancient Spren (life broken = spren) really did get out of hand! Not so humorous, but my most favorite Pattern line was about dividing by zero! Before the mating riffs. And why is this important? Does anyone else get goosebumps when the checkers in the grocery store call "three's a crowd" over the PA system . . . Or is that just me? Bless your peapickin' fractal heart, Pattern! You are amazing (& not Lift-esque).... Rwgarding boots . . When you take your fly rod to the not-Purelake, and go hunting for some non-magical hungry fish, just remember that those waders which fasten on your chest with the clever little bent wires and the metal buttons are also a kind of boots! Boots & boots .... and the chiral universe, and the efforts of Vorin Women's clothing to slow down the next Desolation. Humor, oh the book makes me LOL often enough ... It surely does . .
  10. More cross related considerations:

Desolations . . We've had a few.  plague, Spanish Flu, two world wars, but the cultures are tobust enough to survive in this age, we hope.

In the story of the Churning of the Milky Ocean . . . The Deva and the Asura are pitted against each other, looking for the Elixer of Imortality.

When it is finally found, the "overseer" gives it to one side, and causes lots of hard feelings.

Deva & Asura are not inlike the Fused.

  11. Where can I read about the splintering of Adonalsium? Which book? TIA .. :-)
  12. Hope this helps. When I get this better inderstood I will mosey over to the doscussion board! Thank you!
  13. Hopefully this will clarify the post . . . I was running on amazement when I made it, this is my first exposure to massive global magical systems!
  14. Gosh, you guys, I'm flattered, kinda. I am just getting into Brandon's world (Stormlight Trilogy), and it's magnificent, but until I read Warbreaker, Aether of Night and Elantris (then Arcanum Unbounded) I was struggling with the structure of the Magic Systems in play. Now, I know I have to plumb the Mistborn books to really come to terms with it, -- so more reading. This quote would be about conjoining the Magic Systems as understood in the Orient//East . . . With those as they are understood in the West . . Actually this quote concerns the point in History where the Magic Systems of the West are consolidated and fixed, as "Anedjti who is at the head of the eastern nomes" . . Is actualy the first embodiment of Osirus//Orion . . Egypt was a showplace for the World, the Osirus myth is very like the splitting of Pangea .. 7 continents and 7 seas. [Mankind and his mind//mentation is ever bounded by the keepers of wisdom, to maintain the evolution of the sacred life//essence of The People --- and even the Sheeple! ] The true Eastern Magics are based on high spin, and possibly other wisdom brought from off world by Soma Raja, who brought the 108 Plant Teachers to Earth, he himself is one of these, like the Stormfather is a spren. He is thought to be Salvia Divinorum. To plumb this information, you really have to watch the 22 videos by Ananda Bosman on Youtube . . The presentation for the 2009 Shamanic Conference in Peru, (which Ananda was unable to attend). Ananda Bosman 2009 Shamanic Conference Videos ... 22 -- helps to take notes! It is also helpful to be aquainted with the Bon Poe Sorcerers. .. quite capable, and a big problem for Tibet for many generations (power does tend to corrupt). When you listen to Ananda you will discover the 8 htz communication network, a real thing in the Universe, which allows the "Powers of the Ethnogens" --- the teachers which access your mind when you are "quantum entangled" with their realm due to eating the resonant plant substance, and being given access to the communication network. Wild, huh!! (0.0) . . . There is precident for this 8 htz network in the history of the Buddhas. Then I found that the Magic System considered in the Story of The Emperor's Soul ... is based on magics which would have come from beyond the keen of Western minds. I had not read the Arcanum Unbound at the time I posted this. The presence of real Eastern Magic in the Cosmere was gratifying to find! This puts substantial magical comprehension into the system, and gives me a reason to pursue more of Brandon's works! . . . Which is fun! Research is not boring, but reading about magic is like sugar plums and other sweets . . delicious and slightly addictive! _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ If you have a dedicated spiritual space in your physical life, let me suggest: Obtain a small//medium tart apple, and a serious amount of cloves, whole cloves --- poke the cloves (dried flower buds from a tree) into the apple until it is completely covered in cloves, then hang or place in a nice place. it will not decay and it will keep for a V E R Y long time . . And smell very nice! Apple essence encased in clove buds is not quite a spren in a gem, but the concept might be similar! I will update this after I have plumbed the Mistborn books! I will be less likely to put my foot in my mouth at that point!!! A awesome books, awesome boards! Burning "antimony?" #51 on the periodic table? ... I see Antium has some precident in fiction.
  15. I had a possible epiphany about Kaladin, but he is a Surgebinder, like Szeth, and that causes him to dislike shardblades, intensely (a telling trait?). I think the Spren he bonded before Syl (because some can bond more than one) . . might have been the Stormfather himself! [[ And in a book we may never see, before Warbreaker, Kaladin who does not take up even side swords, was taught sword skills by Vanth Vasher? Holy, moley!' This is over on the Brandon comments and somewhere in this thread as a quote!]] It makes a kind of sense that Kaladin bonding the Stormfather is why Syl ran off to find him and bind him to her ["I choose this one." She said during a calamity, ostensibly with other spren listening! . . And this is after she has been said to have been killed by Kaladin thinking and speaking about killing Elkohar, -- the part that must be amputated .. stormlight has not entered his mental view on medical training, though he is aware subconsciously.] During the HIGHSTORMS all three realms are united, (how the gems recharge), and Shallan and Kaladin saw the two giant shining forms walking across the shattered plains when they were sheltering during the highstorm, after the assination//bridge collapse fiasco. Kaladin has visions, short personal visions, which bring him into living contact with the Stormfather Spren. Hmmmm . . After Kaladin has thoroughly vetted the intentions of the current day Dalinar (He stresses over the purity of the intentions of Dalinar, when talking to Syl!), --- then Dalinar is bonded to the Stormfather . . prior to his perpendicularity epsode, during a storm, and during which he binds a Spren into the King's Drop. Curiouser and curiouser . . . All this leads me to wonder . . . Could Kaladin actually be the Champion of Odium? Poor brain, have some Horn Eater stew and get a good night's sleep! . . . A golden light, brilliant yet terrible. Standing before it, a dark figure in black Shardplate. The figure had nine shadows, each spreading out in a different direction, and its eyes glowed a brilliant red. Dalinar stared deep into those eyes, and felt a chill wash through him. Though the destruction raged around him, vaporizing rocks, those eyes frightened him more. He saw something terribly familiar in them. This was a danger far beyond even the storms. This was the enemy’s champion. And he was coming." Page 24
  16. About the "shallow romance" . . . Shallan is 17 freaking years old, first time away from home! . . . Andolin barely 20? No experience and winging it badly . . . Very good thing the attraction is solid! About the largess of the book ... many words, some interludes .... Brandon is a thorough author! ... Two more books coming up. :-) I FOR ONE, WILL BE TAKING NOTES . . (short or more) on the interludes when I read it for the second time ... BECAUSE ....I suspect this is setting the base for the next two volumes . . . Which no one is going to grouse about being too long, and ending too quickly ... (I'm fairly certain!)
  17. I can see a correlation in some of Brandon's work with some parts of ancient archeology. At one point in time there were several races evolving on EARTH (Orient, Ukraine//Anatolia//Europe, Maya, Turtle Island-N. America, India// Micronesia//Oz) one was the Mother goddess culture in Aratta//Ukraine (see info below), and then came the arrival of the Sky Gods as they are referred to old Sumerian (proto-sumerian writings) scripts. These sky Gods may have been the basis for the Singers, as they brought the farming and animal husbandry to humans in a wide distribution (Indra's Net) -- beef, wool and beer! These folks began wars on purpose (not at first, but they seemed to lose it here on this planet!)! They seemed to revel in death and destruction eventually pulling mankind into their battles ... (the myth of the Horsemen, red for war, black for disease?), and the peoples of Aratta//Ukraine seem to have begun issuing a warning, actually! --- When this race found Earth. It may have been (and this paragraph is all cojecture) that these sky gods had a mission to re-breathe life into one of their ancient kings, and to this end harvested human energy from soldiers dying on the battlefield. [see Senmut tomb ceiling link, below] I surmise this from a certain very old crop circle, and Odin's Ravens//Valkyries. Creepy, no doubt, but not every evolution of beings shares the same level, of civility or evolutionary grace. Inanna was brought back from death with certain instruments in a story about her trip into the underworld. As Brandon's Magic systems seem to predate this era, it may be that these ("some" humans) desolations -- are as eras of mankind; --- and a facit of history, but not a pattern of continued influence. Mankind has a very long history on this lovely Spaceship Earth, and her story tellers are in some respects heros in their own right. I have to admit to being in awe of Brandon's Universe and his competence as an author. Awaiting the next 2 books of the Stormlight group.
  18. This is kinda my reaction to my first actual dip into mega-mythic-magical manuscripts. I suppose it is un-humble of me to consider that Brandon has not already addressed this, but the quote presented itsel, and the mix being what it was . . .
  19. Is there an archive, or a way to get a text or pdf of the Writing Excuses broadcasts? If it's there I missed it ... I would llike to pursue the wisdom, but my data allotment under my current budget prevents streaming. TIA
  20. The Cosmere is awesome, and Brandon is an Earth spanning presence in the world of books and authors, such breadth of Vision and comprehension! The praise being given, here then is the offering: I thought to bring this quote to this board from another where I practically camp out. Graham Hancock's Web Site. My research is in books about the dirt, the ancient sites, the amazing ancient texts, and lots of mental shuffling considering all these things. Brandon has said he was very taken with the culture of Korea, and I appreciate this. There might be a good reason to visit works on Tibet and the Bon Poe in relation to items from Korea. One must consider the timing of the Bon Poe Sorcerers in relation to the Earth's encounter with the asteroids and their incipient flood (the Great Flood of Noah) . . This is up and coming work, and very exciting, asteroids and the Sword of Damoclese, indeed! Even the Bible mentions the "surprises" which the ) Lord has saved for the End of Days. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Author: eyeofhorus33 Date: December 19, 2016 07:46PM See PT 220 after a transliteration and German translation on the Thesaurus Linguae Aegyptiae web site: Altägyptisches Wörterbuch, Berlin-Brandenburgische Akademie der Wissenschaften, D. Unas PT 222 Animal husbandry is referenced explicitly here. I imagine this differs from your own unique interpretation of the PT, Sam. Matt http://grahamhancock.com/phorum/read.php?1,1082875,1082904#msg-1082904 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ __ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Animal husbandry being specifically involved then we need, possibly, to investigate the Vedas and find the aproximate time that Indra's Net was invested upon the Earth …. Cows and Horses …. May have come along with the introduction of farming, and seed development, Anatolia, and possibly Gobekli Tepi, which is so much in the news. I would venture to say it came at the time of the Lowering of Kingship from Heaven, after the flood. This may have been after Set had walked the Earth, or -- it may be contemporaneous, as this era is also the era of the great bird God (most easily discerened on Rapa Nui, -- in the myths of Easter Island). The birds were a terror in the early ages of man in the Americas as they considered men part of their normal diet! The ground based ones were very fast, easily outpacing most prey, and men with even greater facility. The flying variety were huge enough to carry off a cow, or small dinosaur? _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Why is this -- possibly -- of import to Brandon's Cosmere? The writer is a Storm in himself, … lordy, 5 books in 5 years + other stuff. The Storm can update anywhere within its bounds (a great virtue of the form). However, it also has base understandings, and these were understood at the outset. Brandon is enamored of life and the inderpinnings of life, and his grasp is consumate. Still, he wants to span all of creation on Earth, which is a very noble endeavor at the end of an age. Bravo, Brandon! His encounter with the East came under the cultural influences of the West . . . Western culture has fairly well spread its mantle of construction and commerce over all the civilized cultures of the world. Thus Brandon would not have the insight of the truly ancient mindset without having been exposed to tombs, manuscripts and cultural overtones of the ancient, or older age. People have never been dull, but they have embraced many belief systems, points of perspective, some very inclusive! Some believe the worldwide prediluvian language was structured so as to prevent people from thinking incorrectly. It was lost with the flood. So, I just thought to share this, at a small breathing space in the production and deliniation of The Cosmere …. in hopes that it will facilitate the easy and flowing archtecture necessary for The Cosmere to embrace both East and West. Structure underlies the common Universe! Awesome books! Thank you for these amazing and awesome books.
  21. Oh oh .... Idea ... not Cosmere related, (but actually, maybe) ....

Inanna, goes to Hel (that's Celtic, can't recall the Sumerian name) ... because her beloved Drumuzi is dead, but she can beg a child (breeding session) off his brother ... this is Sumerian high-person law.

The wife of said brother tells her no way, and sends her into the depths, where she is stripped & hung on a pole.  The lady runs this place, 100%.

Inannna's  faithful steward gets a message off to Anu on the home world, and he sends his King's Men to administer 60 days waters of life and 60 days bread of life to the now 'expired' Inanna ....

She wakes up and walks out of Hel, along with many figures which look like sticks! . . . Birds or insects?

I wonder if this is in any way similar to the Parshmen changing form in a storm?

Would some King, somewhere whip up a NEW Storm to save his favorite?  Would some new "form" come into being in the depths of time?  Birds?

Is Venli the servant of Odium?  His Champion?

Perhaps its dangerous to mix archeology and mythic magical fiction?

  22. Dragonsteel . . Oh my, now it begins to fall together! Thank you! The one who Connects ... AAnd thank you too, Weltall! ...Mistborn Secret History ... next up!
  23. I did find this ... it seems I have A LOT to read! interesting . . humans vs listeners ... spren choosing sides . . Theory: The Listeners are the Pre-Shattering native inhabitants of Roshar (WoR Spoilers)
  24. Ah, this is in books I have not read yet! Please -- direct me toward the proper reding materials. Most importantly, what caused the creation of the 16 shards -- which book? I suppose .. also .. that Odium might appeal subconsciously to a person as positive in a stressed dream state, not inlike The Thrill introduces itself to all the combatants before a battle ... all are afraid and the Thrill appears like a helping hand. Just wondering, is it known how many of the Shards are dead, now? Also, a shardblade which embodied love/compassion? Does compassion come from Cultivation? Still corals and pollins and most animals do not bond or seek love with passion. They are at the service of structure and the ordered Universe. I reserve the right to re-argue this from a standpoint of levels, but since I am missing much of the information, I yield to your argument... (maybe I am biased, I like sunshine, Odium seems to be "like" sunshine). Thank you for the heads up!
