  1. I think the issue with Martin is that the point of his books isn't to excite us. The point of his books is to show a really really dark bad and grim world, and that he does well. Martin's books show a pretty bleak take on reality, where pretty much everyone is looking out for themselves, and people who aren't will probably get killed or at least have a very hard time getting anything done (like Dany in Meereen). If your looking for an action packed fantasy novel, then don't read these books. But these books are very well written, and have characters who actually stay in character- even if it means the author has to kill them off (or someone else- like Joffrey having Ned executed), and each character is unique and interesting.
  2. I finished The Queen of Sorcery by David Eddings, and though it wasn't anything amazing, it was definitely better than the first Belgariad book and I can truthfully say that I enjoyed it and plan to read the rest of the series as well. I've started reading Foundation's Edge (about 30 pages in), and it seems to be pretty much the same kind of book the original trilogy was- though admittedly, it's a pretty awesome kind of book.
  3. My favorites: The wheel of time- duh. Probably the best fantasy series ever. Songamaster by Orson scott Card Congo by Michael Crichton (its not fantasy or sci-fi but it's a totally awesome book) The first three books in Michael Scott's the Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel- they're awesome, but the quality deteriorates in the later books, I didn't even bother to read the sixth and last book after the disappointing book 5. Brisingr by Paolini- I've heard people say that this was the worst in the Inheritance Cycle, but it was my favorite. Dune by Frank Herbert- I just read this, and it's really awesome A Storm of Swords by George R. R. Martin -the rest of the Song of Ice and Fire is merely ok, but I really liked this one. Probably also a bunch of other books I can't think of right now Anyway, I think the names I heard most here were Jim Butcher and Malazan. I read the first 100 pages of Gardens of the Moon before giving up due to utter confusion, but now I've decided to give it another chance sometime. As for Butcher, I read the Furies of Calderon, and although the ending was pretty awesome, I found myself struggling to get through the middle of the book.
  4. Hmmmmmm... after reading all these posts of people either ranting about American Gods or defending it with fervor, I am tempted to read it just to see who I agree with. Then again, I'd rather not risk such a controversial book when there are so many books that everyone agrees are good. Anyway, I've just finished Frank Herbert's Dune, and I've got to say that it was really really really good. It has interesting politics, a cool world (Arrakis=Dune) and one of the more fascinating cultures I've ever read about (the Fremen). Also, I thought the book was really well written. Usually, when writers changes POVs mid scene, I find it disorienting and that it somehow disrupts the flow of the story. But although Herbert is constantly changing the Pov in the middle of a scene, jumping back and forth between characters, I found the change to be smooth and it didn't bother me at all. I'll now be reading Queen of Sorcery by David Eddings (hopefully I'll enjoy it more than the first Belgariad book, someone here said I should give Eddings another try), and then I'll move on to Asimov's Foundation's Edge, which I'm rather excited about.
  5. Cool! I never thought a Shard could maybe be manifested in a spren, I thought they could only do humans. I guess we need a better understanding of what the spren really are in order to know if this is even possible.
  6. If you used a Basic Lashing on a wall, then that wall becomes like the floor to you- right? Well then what happens if there is a door in that wall, and you go through the door? Does gravity pull you to the wall from the other side, or is gravity just in the direction of the wall, and if that's the case, you just fall out and if there's nothing to stop you- possibly fall out into space? And what happens if you're in the doorway?
  7. Interesting, no one has voted for the same book yet.
  8. Finished the Foundation trilogy, and I've got to say, it's pretty awesome! I think the only real downside to it is that athough all the characters are really well done, none of them span the whole trilogy, since from the begining to the end about 500 years pass. Otherwise, I would highly reccomend these books. I'm already almost 50 pages into Frank Herbert's Dune, and it is getting really interesting.
  9. If breaking his word made Szeth lose his powers- wouldn't that be a incentive for him to brake his word? Szeth doesn't at all like having to be an assassin, and if he lost his powers, his usefullness as an assassin would severely dimnish. So, I don't think that losing his powers is the reason that Szeth won't break his oath, but rather that it's probably some Shin thing. That being said, there is no reason to say that breaking his oath won't take away Szeth's powers (They come from Honor after all), but that wouldn't be the reason that he doesn't break his oath.
  10. Hello to all brandon sanderson fans! Anyway, I'm new to the forums, and I would just like to generally introduce myself- I am Trizee (There- I'm introduced). And if any of you are wondering how I came up with the name- I can't remember myself, it was the name I used on fanfiction when I used to right and read there a few years back, and since I couldn't think of anything else, I decided to use it again! Well, now that I'm formally introduced, I'll go and discuss things on the forum!
  11. Hey! I'm new here on this forum, so I figured I'd just post what i'm reading here: The foundation trilogy by Isaac Asimov (I'm reading the second now- Foundation and Empire, and then I'll read the third- Second Foundation- it's all in the same volume) After that, I'll be reading Dune by Frank Herbert, and then its back to the library for me! By the way, I saw a lot of people were praising the Belgariad on this thread, but I read the first one (Pawn of Prophecy) and thought it was kinda lame. So, is it worth it to keep reading -does it get better?
