If anyone has any suggestions for how I can move forward (slowly) to achieve my dream, let me know.  Maybe some kind of online writing group of people who go really slowly (ie are adults with kids and don't have much time) ?

Go for it! I am a SAH Mom with 4 kids under 5 and my experience is that you can always carve out a little time for writing.  When I started taking it seriously I pretty much stopped watching TV (except with my husband and that was more about us time than the shows), and wrote instead.

As for how to find a writing group, I did an online writing course and formed a group from there. I suspect if you look in your local area you could find groups that gather too. I don't think having people at the same stage as you matters, I have people in my group half my age and one who is already a full time published author and it's great!

    Off topic, sorry folks :)

Will Tarah be coming back into the equation, do we think?

Yes, though not as a serious interest I think, just tying up the loose ends.

Someone else pointed this out, but I think Tarah is already there. In the scene where Shallan is training as a spy, she describes a women who dresses unusually (but similar to how Kaladin describes Tarah's dress) who seems to be looking for someone. My guess is that Tarah has heard of Kaladin Stormblessed, and is keeping her eye out for him.

So, this might be a bit of a tangent from this thread, but is Kaladin's plate going to be made up of Windspren? The times it's seemed like he's been close to saying the Words, there were windspren conspicuously around him. And if so, are there other cousins to the highspren that the orders bond that will make up their Plate?

That is what I assume. And Dalinar's of glory spren.

The diagram has something up its sleeve related to Renarin Kholin.

I am not sure the diagram has a plan for him. I think it is just that Renarin is a wildcard. No one knows what his influence will be. Therefore smart/cruel Mr T can't predict how he fits and Odium can't see his role in the future.

  5. Yanagawn stood on the prowl, starring at the retreating enemy ships. He didn't know what it meant, nor the light that had pierced the sky in the middle of the storm. But it was time.

    "Head back to Thaylen City"

Noura shook her head. "We can't risk it. We don't even know she survived."

Yanagawn had no time to argue. A call came up from the mast. There were figures flying towards the boat. The archers began to assemble, but Yanagawn called "wait!"

Two figures approached. One looked to be Herdazian and was glowing with Stormlight. The other was floating beside him, legs crossed in the air, chewing on some flat bread.

"Lift!" Gawx jumped in the air, his hat tumbling to the deck. He laughed, caring little. No one was looking at him anyway. They were all starring up. Unoqua actually had tears in his eyes.

Lift landed on the deck dropping her bread. "You would think saving a city would at least get you some famous Thaylen soft bread. Got anything better than this cardboard?"

Dalksi interrupted. "The city? We heard the Alethi turned"

"Some of the soldiers got possssed by Odium. But we won. Old tight-butt saved the day."

"She means Dalinar." Yanagawn answered into the stunned silence.

Lift nodded. "So I think it is time you trusted me. And Gawx. And time you stormin showed me to the food."

Gawx pointed to his rooms. Lift bowed towards her Radiant friend. "Thanks your majesty." Then she headed below.

    Everyone turned to the Herdazian.

"Who are you?" Dalksi starred him up and down.

The man nodded. "Of course you haven't heard of me yet. But your children will hear tales of the Lopen, the great two-armed Herdazian Radiant."

Yanagawn was puzzled. How many arms did he expect to have?

Lopen breathed in and glowed with even brighter light.

"I must go. Thaylen City is full of women who are hearing tales of my heroics as I speak."

Then he winked at the Grand Vizier of Aziz and took off into the sky.

  6. I don't think Kaladin needs a relationship to be complete. I think the scene with the rock has a double meaning. Shallan reminded him of Tien, and then Syl in turn gets excited about the rock. ie Syl=Kaladin's new Tien. He doesn't need a relationship to help him when he is down, he has Syl (and Bridge 4 to a certain extent)

All that said, I love reading romance and it won't do him any harm!

No characters in existence at the moment work for me, so we would need a new one.

I think Kaladin needs someone who is NOT a Windrunner. Someone who can remind him that life doesn't have to always be about serious things and sacrificing yourself all the time.  Someone who can challenge him when he is too stubborn and make him laugh. I like the idea of a scholar- Kaladin is unusully bright (his Father suggests this) and has intelligent parents which would lend him that way.

My silly theory? Janah mentioned to Shallan that she has evidence that she doesn't do well with wards. So presumably she has had others under her tutelage who did not work out. I love the idea that one of her old students turns up, and ending up a love interest for Kal.  They would be bright, stubborn (which made Jasnah dump them as a ward), and a little bit irreverant.

Incidently, Shallan was wrong about the flying thing. Having a boyfriend who can fly? Okay. Having a boyfriend who can lash you to the sky so you can fly with him? That is the most romantic thing ever.

If Kaladin and his eventual girl don't have a scene of them flying off into the sunset I will be very disappointed!

Does anybody else feel disappointed that he was the one to kill Amaram tho? There was some sweet poetic justice in Kaladins fight with Amaram and I was REALLY hoping he would get to be the one to kill him. Yeah Rock protected him, and yeah we got more reinforcement of "Kaladin is not alone" but I feel that was presented clearly enough when Dalinar saved the team in Shadesmar, after Kaladin failed to speak the words. Taking away his ability to be the one and kill Amaram was frustrating.

I liked it. It fit so well with the scene. Kalladin faces Amaran, knowing he is going to die, but acknowledging that Bridge 4 has saved him. And then, a member of Bridge 4 saves him from death as well.

In some ways it is like Roshane times 100. He is eaten up with anger and revenge for so many years, then comes to realise how pathetic his nemesis really is. Amaran was the real broken spear.

I just hope dear Rock can forgive himself.

  8. I love the topic, but I just can't see it happening, even if it was possible. Remember Kalladin met Syl when she was mentally like a little kid, it would feel kind of wrong, even though she is growing up, to have him see her that way.

  9. There is so much room for her to grow! And I like that- I think she will be one of the most interesting POVs in books 4 and 5. She went from naive and scared to cocky and over-confident, and I can't wait to see more of her relationship with the Ghostbloods as she finally discovers she is out of her depth.

And I love her puns! My kind of humour.

She also brings out the best in both Adolin and Kalladin.

  10. Every post I read I think "Oh, them too"

    Top 3

    1. Renarin. Has been since Wok. We only get tastes of his story but his heart is so pure. The scene with Dalinar in the flashbacks absolutely broke me. So much suffering and mistreatment and yet he cares so much. I also loved the scene with Rock, how he turns away from his own insecurity and sits with Slain. Book Renarin can't come soon enough.

    2. Rock was so close to number one. Funny, sweet, broken and the heart of Bridge 4

    3. Evi. I wish she got to see how far Dalinar (and her boys) have come.

  11.  I feel like Tarah's name being dropped in the first two books meant I expected so much more when she finally arrived. The scene with her was a bit of an anticlimax, much to short and sparse.

So part of me wants her to appear so we can get more of the story, but another part would be happy with a new character for Kalladin. After All, we have many more characters we will meet, particularly KRs!
