Solicitation for FAQs and their Answers - Cosmere
Morsk replied to Kurkistan's topic in Cosmere Discussion
By the way, you can put #53 on the end of a theoryland URL to do that. I can't find a way to get the link directly, without manually adding it, but it works and is pretty convenient. -
(Theory) The Tanavallah: a Surgebinders Guide to Harmonics
Morsk replied to Isomere's topic in Cosmere Discussion
That's the same quote I was thinking of, with water being a form of blood not a separate element. Soulcasting seems like one part of Vorin symbolism that wouldn't get corrupted with time, since they still need to know which gems to use for which Soulcasters. Continuing the example, downvoting would be like Odium as 1/16th of Adonalsium, something that serves a purpose as long as it's under control. Trolling is Odium the Shard, all by itself, running around trying to make everyone mad at everyone else. A more serious example is the God of the Abrahamic religions, who's held to be all-good, but also issued some terrible punishments. I think Szeth's punishment parallels Cain's and that it's intentional, and that it's supposed to show this frightening, judgmental side of the divine, all the more frightening in Odium's case, because that's all he is. I need Truthless to be something Odium corrupted into the Shin religion for the parallel to make sense though, so it's something of a guess. That's interesting. I noticed that Szeth hates his victims, his masters, and himself, and figured it was Odium's influence. But I never made a connection to the Thrill. Szeth's hate could be a more extreme case of something that's available to everyone on Roshar. What would it do though? Is it just a bias towards hate, or is the Thrill what's powering Szeth's magic?

Downvoting. Odium is the Shard of Downvoting. Most of online culture would cease to exist without His power. Perhaps all culture would. Odium is probably part of judgment, or even choice or preference, the same way Ruin is part of life. He seems to be even more dangerous if left unchecked though.

Shai. My absolute favorite thing is when she admits in one chapter that her Uncle Won isn't real and she made him up, and in a later chapter she's still thinking of Uncle Won's advice in her PoV.

(Theory) The Tanavallah: a Surgebinders Guide to Harmonics
Morsk replied to Isomere's topic in Cosmere Discussion
The quote sure makes it sound like Soulcasting is its own system, not a surge, doesn't it? That would even let Jasnah be #2 and Shallan #6 with no conflicts. I think the quote is outdated though, and Brandon changed his mind, and it's related to Learned/Giving and Just/Confident being swapped in the Ars Arcanum. He made Transformation a surge and had to move one of Jasnah & Shallan so they could be adjacent. Just a guess, but either way everything we've heard since the book came out makes Soulcasting sound like one of the surges.- 89 replies

Gallant only eating when he feels he deserves it sounds a lot like Honor's intent, so I do think there's something magical about these horses. Maybe Szeth used Hemallury on a Ryshadium to get his Windrunning. Um never mind. What I meant to say is that greatshells are native to Roshar and evolved for symbiosis with spren. Humans are alien to Roshar, and only rarely does one bond with a spren, but it's at least possible. The Ryshadium could be on an evolutionary path somewhere in between, originally alien, but adapting towards Roshar and bonding with spren more freely than humans.

One of The Lord Ruler's plaques even said you can have multiple weak Soothers push on Koloss together. If it works there, it would definitely work with Coinshots.

I love the idea of Awakeners being better at hearing Bronze pulses, etc., but I completely disagree with the theory. I don't think Shards are the lens, since Brandon is explicit that any Shard can fuel any magic system, and that the intent only changes how they do it, not the magic powers. If there are different lenses, I guess it's the planets.

Well, the 4th book is where Wheel of Time really became something new and special, not just a standard fantasy series. It's a shame not to read the 4th and 5th. The problem is you won't get any kind of ending or closure unless you finish the whole series.

Do atium Mistings even exist anymore, since Harmony ascended and changed the external time metals? Brandon could've been giving a non-answer to a non-question there. I really want to blame Harmony for Bloody Tan, and say Harmony got him atium somehow, that if Harmony ever upsets the balance by being too nice, the immediate outlet is to find someone mentally ill, like how Ruin took advantage of Vin's mother, and compel them to do horrible things.

Vader would convert TLR to the Dark Side. So Vader wins. (I sometimes dread the third Mistborn trilogy being a Star Wars parody, with the Dark and Light Side of Harmony. I know Brandon won't do it, but I still dread it...)

Turn off the 'click on an image' popup.
Morsk replied to Phantom Monstrosity's topic in Tech Support
Chrome lets me right-click the image, but Firefox doesn't. (In Firefox, right-clicking does the same thing left-clicking does.) Strange. It's definitely less annoying the way it works in Chrome. -
Hi. I'll probably never get another chance to say this in a thread where it's remotely relevant. "Lamespren" is hilarious, and I've come close to giggling at it multiple times. It's comedic genius. I never get a chance to say this, because pointing out the rank in front of someone who has it wouldn't be nice... but I do always find it at least a little funny. Hoed is alright too, but Lamespren is my favorite.

I'm sure I heard it's Dalinar and Eshonai, but I can't find it either! I just spent 15 minutes too. This would be great in the FAQ if we can just find a source; it would save anyone else from having to do all this searching.

(Theory) The Tanavallah: a Surgebinders Guide to Harmonics
Morsk replied to Isomere's topic in Cosmere Discussion
You might be thinking of momentum, which does have a direction. Inertia is measured in the same units as mass.Making something easier or harder to move, or to stop, without changing its direction, is nothing like the Basic Lashing. If Szeth wants to get up to a certain momentum to charge into a Voidbringer, he has to go very fast, and he's going to get splattered when he hits. An inertia-based power wouldn't be based on getting to high speeds, and its users wouldn't get splattered if they hit something.- 89 replies

(Theory) The Tanavallah: a Surgebinders Guide to Harmonics
Morsk replied to Isomere's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Windrunners increase gravity without changing mass. I don't see any more problem in increasing inertia and/or momentum without changing mass. One problem though is it's a bit redundant to Shardplate; being heavier and stronger gets you most of the same effect.- 89 replies

(Theory) The Tanavallah: a Surgebinders Guide to Harmonics
Morsk replied to Isomere's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I can see an inertia power if it's more of doing a running charge into huge Voidbringer monsters and knocking them over, or resisting being knocked over by huge Voidbringers, and less flying around. Knights only get their 3 powers, not unlimited use of the surge, so there's still room for it to work out differently. Like say they can only increase inertia, or only increase their own.- 89 replies

(Theory) The Tanavallah: a Surgebinders Guide to Harmonics
Morsk replied to Isomere's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I don't understand this part, especially Blood and Water being separate. The table in the Ars Arcanum has Blood vs. Oil, and I figured water would be a type of Blood. (And the surge between them would be something involving the physics of fluids, maybe viscosity or surface tension. Or solubility, since oil and non-oil fluids tend not to mix.) There are definitely some elemental themes, with "gas stuff" top-right, etc. I can't make it all work though; the bottom-right doesn't really fit. Actually on second thought, I guess I understand what you're trying, but I think the lack of water means it can't be right. You want a classic element to correspond to one Essence, but I'm seeing more of solid/liquid/gas, and the association with classic elements being incidental. edit: I think I fixed the image.- 89 replies

This is interesting. What if it isn't permanent? Consider that Allomantic uses of Atium don't last very long, but Hemalluric use is permanent. And Allomantic use of Lerasium is permanent. Maybe the spike would slowly lose its charge, even in use? I like the idea that Lerasium cheats around Hemalurgy's greatest disadvantage, but at the cost of not working very well. Oh here's a combination use. Steal something with it, then instead of spiking yourself, burn the spike. You get the new ability permanently, but at the cost that you just burned Lerasium which is sooooooo useful.

I've been ignoring Shallan's memories, figuring her mother cut a deal with the Nightwatcher for "a special child" and ended up with a curse so horrible she killed herself as soon as the pregnancy was over. Or that they're Shallan's equivalent of Kaladin's not needing to breathe. I forgot how much it changes things, not to have to make memory a surge. I don't think of internal surges at all, but you're using them as half the table, to have memory in there. So it's pretty different.- 89 replies

(Theory) The Tanavallah: a Surgebinders Guide to Harmonics
Morsk replied to Isomere's topic in Cosmere Discussion
How would this theory handle Shallan being #3 Brave/Obedient, like this? It's much less popular than Shallan as #6 Creative/Honest, but I still like to evaluate new evidence and theories in light of it. Gravity Kaladin / WindPressureJasnah / SmokeTransformationShallan / FireLight I also like thinking of fire as being "light and transformation", and of transformation as being between smoke and fire. It's alchemical not scientific, but wind as "gravity and pressure" isn't really scientific either, just a loose association. Anyway is this completely incompatible, and would lack the nice symmetries you're looking for? Or is it just different?- 89 replies

Brandon's statements on Harmony's power, and a theory
Morsk replied to TheOneKEA's topic in Cosmere Discussion
My talent is coming up with great-sounding ideas that are never right. There was another post but I can't find the thread, or if it was here and was deleted. But the poster said Odium was thinking of himself, and what would happen to his own Shard if he took another one to go with it. I like that interpretation more now. edit: Yes that's it below. -
Brandon's statements on Harmony's power, and a theory
Morsk replied to TheOneKEA's topic in Cosmere Discussion
It could be more general; Odium could just be afraid of any two Shards combining, since it's a direct threat to his goal of being the most powerful thing in the cosmere without picking up any more Shards himself. Even if he didn't know it was possible, he'd fear it, and then Harmony proves that it's possible.
