  1. Jerrek dropped from the top of the courtyard wall. A few of the more timid plants retreated into their shells at the noise. Jerrek waited in a low crouch, but heard no sounds from the alley he'd left behind.

Rising, he picked his way through the rubble that spilled away from the collapsed back gate. An oddity that. Most riots didn't go for tearing down worked stone. He assumed the original owners had installed a trap to make the house more defensible. Whatever the case was, the only way in or out of the house now was climbing the wall, and with the owners absent, the house fit Jerrek's purposes perfectly.

In the back door, across the moonlit lounge, and around the dining table brought him to the kitchens. The hearth sat cold and shadowed, the racks bare, the shelves hollow. The empty room stood testament to any who came to scavenge. Clearly, these bones had already been picked clean and gnawed open.

Jerrek crossed to the dark stairs and descended to the cellar, trailing his fingers along the finished stones of the wall as the gloom closed in around him. At the bottom, eight measured steps brought him to the second inset doorway. He turned and rapped on the wood in a staccato pattern.

A few seconds later, he heard the bar slide free. "Greetings, Brother Farrah." Jerrek murmured. "Are the children still abed?"

Farrah released a small stream of light from his thoroughly hooded lantern, the indirect glow sufficient for the two men to move without colliding in the dark. "They are. They'll be glad to see you on waking." His words were equally soft.

"If only I could remain." Jerrek slipped the sack from his shoulder and placed it gently on the small table he'd moved down from the kitchen. "I need to be at tomorrow's meeting. If events allow, I'll spend some time here after my return."

Farrah limped up to the table, his balding head looking more spotted with age in the dimness. "When might that be?"

"I wish I could say. You have enough here to hold out for five days, with this. I'll try to be back by then, or to at least send someone."

The old ardent sighed. "Be careful. The children will miss you."

"You don't need to remind me. They make their opinions quite clear." Jerrek's smile was broad, but his eyes shimmered. He turned back to the door. "But tell them I'm watching out for them. That should get few smiles." He slipped out into the black corridor, pulling the door closed behind him.

I'm new here, so I want you all to feel bad when you kill me. :D

  2. Thanks for that, little wilson. Much appreciated.

One more question: No restrictions on PMs to other players? CC to GM?

(You know, that might be an interesting curse option . . . )

So each of the three factions has two people in their midst who are enemy spies, and two more who are friendly spies that may not be totally loyal, but should be useful while they last. And people aren't going to want to be too open about their roles in their faction docs since there are four untrusted persons in each.

If I have this right, we have 24 players registered thus far:

    Edit: Now 25 players.

That's ten people per faction doc, with two being Seventeenth Sharders loyal to the other two factions. And only three more people to guarantee a full set of roles. And with up to four kills per cycle . . .

This is going to be wild. =)

  3. Jerrek ducked through a doorway as a band of darkeyes rounded the street corner, brandishing spears and rockbud mallets. He wasn't certain why they had elected to chase him. The shouting had come as he'd crossed the side street carrying a small sack of supplies from purchased from one of the few shops defended enough to stay open despite the riots. A quick glance at the band had been enough to convince him that conversation was not the way out of this encounter.

Jerrek strode quickly across the beams that had fallen from the now absent roof, moving unerringly despite the irregular footing. He moved through the back chamber and slipped the bar off the back door. The hinges fell off the wall, and the door fell to the cobblestones. He winced, and a look up the alley proved that whether or not the darkeyes had noted his escape into the building, they had noted his exit.

Jerrek sighed, and ran off down the alley. He'd have to lose this bunch properly before he could return to the safehouse.

Signing up for my first game. I've looked at Werewolf games for a while, but I've never had a chance to join one. But after reading through some of the stuff here, I thought I'd give it a shot.

Could I get a few points clarified?

    • To qualify as active, does that require just the PM to the game master, or is the main thread post also necessary?
    • Is there a global lynch vote, or are the three factions running a lynching apiece?
    • What are the elements of the action PM? Lynch vote (global?, faction?, both?), boon power(if targeted),  and role action; or Nightwatcher prayer (no other actions allowed).
    • All four factions have a win condition of last faction standing, save for individual Seventeenth Shard members winning with either of their allegiances?
    • Are all infiltrators aligned with Seventeenth Shard? Seems a bit odd, but I am minimally experienced at this game.

And let me see if I get the Seventeenth Shard stuff with an Example:

Adam is a Seventeenth Shard Nobleman, and he is spying on the Darkeyes, (He has access to three docs: Seventeenth Shard, Nobleman, and Darkeyes.) If Adam gets lynched or otherwise killed, he will be spooked and lose his access to the Darkeyes doc, and will have to play as a Nobleman for the remainder of his existence in this game. If Bill (Darkeyes, True Voidbringer) spies on Adam, the report will be "Nobleman". If Cob (Darkeyes, Fake Voidbringer) spies on Adam, the report will be "Darkeyes" (the expected result for a person of his "faction"). Adam will win if either the Nobleman faction wins, or if the Seventeenth Shard faction survives.

  4. If you happen to have some free time, might I request something?

I'm working on an update to the Coppermind summary for Hero of Ages, and while the other two book summaries have a liberal splash of chapter icons, the wiki does not yet have a set of book 3 icons.

I am aware that the image linked is rather small, and that the spattered ink effects make for a very difficult trace, which is likely the reason no one has tackled it yet. But personally, I would be completely satisfied with a sharper, font-style rendition. Just something that captures the shapes enough to be recognized as the same lettering.

So if you'd be willing to give it a shot, that would be awesome. ;) Thanks for considering.

  5. My main problem is having no experience making SVG files. Otherwise I might have tried it myself.

I did want to confirm, on the icon template: the first mistborn book uses metal names in the second field, while the second book uses numbers throughout. My work-in-progress has the first book's symbols, and therefore, names as the IDs. Will that be a problem when adding the new icons to the template?

  6. I tried using the Hero of Ages chapter summary to do some research, and ended up dissatisfied. Now that I have done the research manually, I'm planning a big overhaul for the page.

I plan to add epigraphs, chapter and part icons, and viewpoint characters for now, other characters and actual summaries to be added on later passes. I've also been working the formatting into line with the Final Empire summary.

The reason for this post is the icons. I've inserted the original Mistborn icons into my work-in-progress, since the book three icons are not in the wiki yet. Is there any chance that one of the clever SVG artists could get a set together?

Personally, I wouldn't worry about replicating the ink spatters. Just getting the general swirling shapes is enough for me to read them.

  7. I might have missed some nonSA/cosmere-wide stuff but here's most of it:Omaha [Would like more audio for this if anyone has it.]

I rather doubt anyone else recorded the whole thing, save for myself. And if I get another chance, I certainly will ask for permission to place the mike at the signing table. I didn't arrive early enough to do better than I did.

As for more audio, I've provided 116 minutes of the original 210, and I've listened to all of it at least twice. I can provide you with the original, uncut file (288 MB) if you want to slog through it, but I am almost certain that that I included everything that wasn't compliments, chit-chat, and cosplay content.

Last but not least, thanks for all the transcriptions. You got several that I hadn't started yet. I do believe you skipped over the Shadesmar questions (49:47 through 50:42).

Sometime soon, I'll start posting my transcriptions into the opening post. But not right now. Now is time to do other things.

  8. Did anyone ever upload the full signing audio for this? :)

    No. I hadn't.

On the other hand, that statement is now in past tense.

The audio in particular, and perhaps the question index as well, is rife with spoilers, so peruse at your own risk.

Here are Dropbox links for the signing audio, and an index for the 85 minute file.

    20140313_Sanderson_Omaha_QA_Reading.mp3 (31 minutes)

    20140313_Sanderson_Signing_Trimmed.mp3 (85 minutes)

I hope to be able to post my transcription progress soon, but I'm out of time for the moment.

  9. [ . . . ]

To the Mistborn series I kept listening to the Skyrim soundtrace, especially to the the quiet parts; my favorite is "Secunda" imagining Vin in the mists. (The Soundtrack is really good I think.) For Elantris Eleni Karaindrou's "Concert in Athens" seems to fit quite well. I find it amusing that with "Warbreaker" I listened a lot to the Harry Potter (Chamber of Secrets) soundtrack (please don't disdain me for this). Probably somewhere in my subconscious I find it fitting to the often humorous character of the book.

As for the Stormlight Archive I am really not sure yet. Still have some volumes to go in my search, fortunately. I would be happy for suggestions!

Rodrigo y Gabriela - interesting, I'd have to give it a try. But I'm afraid it would be too little "background" for me.  Same with Debussy, interesting recommendation!

As for the Lord of the Ring soundtrack - that one is to occupied with LotR images in my head. ;)

    Welcome to the forum.

I think the Skyrim soundtrack is a great pick, myself liking to listen to video game soundtracks as well. And seriously, nothing wrong with listening to a John Williams soundtrack. Why would you think otherwise? =)

Can't say that I've listened to most of the (non-soundtrack) suggestions. Might have to look up a few at some point.

  10. I'm one of those people who tends to remember things I've read quite well, but I started reading Sanderson when he had only four published novels. When I finished Elantris and the Mistborn trilogy, I looked up his website to see what else would be available. Reading the annotations got me hooked, but even then, I saw the Hoid stuff as a simple easter egg.

It wasn't until I saw the word Adonalsium printed in the Way of Kings that cosmere-awareness really hit me. Even despite the HoA typo. =)

  11. More early release transcriptions by requests:

So he's really scared of Odium, huh.

Q: Is there anything Hoid was scared of? And if so, is it still around, and . . . (Brandon talked over the rest of the question.)

A: There are many things that Hoid is scared of. He is really scared of Odium, but there are others.

Here are my questions and answers from last night:

First, I asked if Hoid has been to Braize and he laughed, smiled, and gave me a RAFO.

Second, I asked if a Seon/Skaze could become a Shardblade or something similar. He said it is theoretically possible but it would need something else to bring it more fully into the physical realm.

Last I asked if the comet Spren was a Highspren. He was coy and said it is very important to one of the orders of Knights Radiant.

Q: Has Hoid ever visited the planet Braize?

A: (sing-song voice) RAFO. Such a big RAFO. The biggest RAFO.

Q: Could a Seon, or a Skaze, could they turn into a, some sort of Shardblade on their own planet?
A: That is theoretically possible. It's—I mean they work under the same fundamentals, but they would need to have something to pull them more into the physical realm.

Q: Do we see the highspren at all in Words of Radiance? And if so, do they look like a comet?
A: That's a good question. That's a gooood, good question. I will say this, the comet, hmm, the comet spren. The comet spren is very important to an order of Knights Radiant.
    Q: Okay. Thank you.

I was also at the signing, some of his answers were pretty fascinating.

He also told someone that "the end of the entire series is already in the first two books, similar to mistborn. But this time, it isn't in the first few pages."

Did anyone gather what books are for which characters?

    Book 1 - Kaladin
    Book 2 - Shallan
    Book 3 - Szeth

    Book 5 - Dalinar

Has anyone heard about book 4, or 6-10?

Q: How far do you plan on taking the Stormlight (Archive)?

A: It is two five book arcs. So it's five books, we'll have a climax and an ending, and we will come back for book six, probably a few years later.

Q: I know you'd said earlier that each book was going to follow one main character with the back stories. Who do you plan on (doing) for the third book?
A: Third book is Szeth. Fourth book is Eshonai. Fifth book is Dalinar.
Q: Awesome. How many are you planning that it is going to be?
A: It's ten books, but there's five books and then a break and then five books.

Q: So do you know quite a bit about what the end of the series is going to be?
A: I do. I do indeed. I've actually written the epilogue to book five.
    Q: Oh, yeah?
A: Just to get it in my head. I wrote it out. Peter, my assistant, sent an exclamation point after he saw that appear in the wiki and stuff. So, yes. And, actually the ending of the entire series, of the ten books, is somewhere in those two books. Just like in Mistborn, it was in the first page; it's not in the first page, but it is in those books.
    Q: Huh. Awesome.

Q: If Dalinar is book three, who is book four?
A: Dalinar is book five. Book four is Eshonai. Szeth is book three.

Wiery directed me over here. I asked about Shallan's parents and another question. here were my questions:

    Q. What group, if any, was Shallan's mother a part of?
    B. RAFO
    Q. Was Shallan's father influenced at all by Odium?
    B. Yes
    Q. Is it possible to bind with more than one spren of different types?
I think you have this one in the opening post, I don't remember the exact words I used - I think what you put in the OP is more the words I used... unless someone else asked the same question (I was too excited to be meeting brandon).
    B. I'm not going to say it's Impossible

Q: So, questions about Shallan's mother. What secret group, if any, was she a part of?

A: (*laughs*) RAFO, but you're right, she was indeed involved.

Q: Also, is her father, was he affected by Odium at all?
    A: Yes.

Q: Can you bond with more than one spren? You've already answered that one in another—You pretty much implied yes.
A: I did not say yes.
Q: You implied. (*background debate*) That is a good one—more than one type of spren?
A: Why don't you—let's see what happens. This is not impossible.
    Q: Perfect. Thanks, Brandon.
    A: I'll just say it's not impossible.

And because I mentioned it earlier:

Q: The hair color: is there a link between the hair color in Warbreaker and the hair color in—like with the Alethi always have black, and I can't remember the other country that always have their gold hair coloring?
A: Yes. You are noticing something very interesting which was done deliberately.
    Q: Okay. I thought so.
A: He finally got something cool for his, for his—he's recording all these questions.
    Q: Oh, okay.
A: You're the first one to ask a really cosmere-centric question.

  12. Ooh, very interesting answer, that second one.

So the Skybreakers are actually an Order with a capital 'O', are they? Very interesting...

    Agreed. WoR

I thought that identifier rather interesting given that it is not the one used in the chapter

In other news, I have provided the introduction, public Q&A session, and reading as a 31 minute soundcloud file. You can find that here: http://soundcloud.co...derson-omaha-qa

I've transcribed none of this yet, so if someone wishes to play, be welcome to it. I can turn on the download option if someone prefers to work offline.

The subjects of the ten questions are:

    1. Aren't you tired?
    2. Alcatraz five
    3. Interactions in Words of Radiance
    4. Hindersnap
    5. Upcoming Works
    6. Elantris 2 / Nightblood
    7. Legion Omnibus
    8. Favorite thing you've written
    9. Steampunk influence
    10. Inspirations for Books

  13. A few more samples from the transcription, to pass the time. Ellipses mark sections where I couldn't tell who was speaking what. Parentheses are educated guesses.

    Q: . . .
    A: Yes, uh-huh.
    Q: And . . . Dalinar . . .
A: During that period before? Both the—You'll see a lot of the Dalinar flashbacks . . . he doesn't know what's going on. You should be able to read between the lines to see what's going on with him. And I think Jasnah might go back that far, but I'd have to go look at my notes. I'm not sure I can't remember off the top of my head where the flashback sequence is. . . . You may eventually see a viewpoint from Gavilar (himself), because every prologue is the same night.
    Q: Is that going to . . .
A: And that's through the first five. Yeah. And then the second five will use . . . inciting incident.
    Q: Thank you very much.

    WoR spoiler:

Q: Does Szeth have any Surgebinding powers . . . losing the honorblade?
A: He would not have any after losing the honorblade. However, he has been approached by a member of one of the orders. And so, it's entirely possible that you would see him going somewhere with that. He also has a very special sword, that does very special things.

As for posting the audio, I'd really like to trim it down to just the sections with questions, and possibly sort those blocks by the question categories as well (book series, cosmere, magic the gathering, writing process / advice, news items). That much will take a fair bit of work, but I don't see that many people being interested in pouring over 210 minutes of poor audio to find a few of 138 questions that interest them. Much more user-friendly in manageable chunks. And easier to avoid spoilers too. I plan to start fiddling with that tomorrow morning, but I doubt I'll be done in less than a week with my current schedule issues.

  14. Also I don't know if this is common knowledge already but one of the other guys I talked to asked where Nightblood fits in chronologically. He said that it is closer to Warbreaker than it is to Way of Kings. A lot closer.

I didn't hear the question myself, that is just what he told me he had asked and what the answer was.

Here's the full transcript of that question, as a little practice run.

Q: So Nightblood, the Warbreaker sequel. Chronologically, does that come before or after the Stormlight Archive?

    A: Before.

Q: Before. So in-between Warbreaker and Stormlight?

    A: Yes.

    Q: Okay.

A: More close to Warbreaker than to Stormlight. I've been promising people that book for years, so, I do need to write it. (continued)

The fun thing is that Vasher was in the original draft from 2002, Way of Kings. And so, he is a Stormlight character in my head, even though I wrote an entire book about him in another world. He's not from Roshar, but . . .

In other news, the entire file is now labeled, and I can start the editing and transcribing process. The downside is that there are about 138 questions to deal with, so feel free to provide encouraging comments, or topics you'd like to have text for. Anything to keep me going.

Other topics in the signing include, but are not limited to:

    • other continents,
    • the sometimes land/water inversion of Shadesmar,
    • the number ten in Mistborn,
    • why Wit asked Dalinar about Adonalsium,
    • Radiants getting shardplate,
    • the missing honorblade (rough audio here, sadly),
    • bonding a spren and using an honorblade,
    • the term Babsk,
    • Soulcaster Ardents,
    • the design of Tension and Cohesion is unfinished,
    • Shallan's parents
    • and Sigzil and Hoid.
  15. Two hours of three-point-five are labeled so far. Quality was better than I'd hoped, overall. Hardly something I'd want to post publicly, but, eh. Perhaps after I edit it down to a denser set of material. Is it common practice to transcribe everything, or just the questions?

There was one RAFO before I got close, and only one question that I cannot make out, and its answer is only half a sentence too.

I've got pretty good audio of paperstones' questions and answers. He has a good paraphrase of it there. And I've found Stormcrown's quote too. The flashback order has come up a couple of times, and there was a question about the state of the SA outline as well.

Brandon's favorite Cosmere question in the first part was someone asking about Alethi hair colors and the possible connection with the Royal Locks from Warbreaker. He said the similarity is deliberate. Then he said I had just gotten a juicy bit for my recording. I'm a total stealth fail. =)

  16. Double posting to let people know that there are now paraphrased answers in the first post, and quoted in this one for quick reference.

Signing has ended. Brandon is awesome--like Lift, but not so flashy. ;)

Full transcription will have to wait for a while, but I want to share a few things while it's fresh. He laid out his upcoming schedule again. The reading was the incubation magic (The Silence Divine), described as a short story. There were two mistcloaks, a Szeth, and a Chalking.

Some Questions Asked (with Paraphrased answers):

    • Are there any Stormlight Archive annotations in the pipeline, and when might they be posted?

      • He has part one of the Way of Kings done, but he keeps referring to Way of Kings Prime, so he doesn't think he'll release any until he is ready to be posting that.

    • Has Khriss appeared or been referenced in any of the published Cosmere books? Which?

      • If you ask around, she has appeared in a few of the unpublished works.

    • Is Khriss the in-universe author of the Ars Arcanum?

      • (He made an appreciative sound, but did not give a direct answer.)

    • Does Khriss owe Nazh a new coat?

      • (He smiled and noted that he isn't going to say too much more about Khriss for the time being.)

    • If a Mistborn is killed with a steel spike, does the spike carry all four Physical Allomantic powers? If yes, is the received power selected by the bind point used? Would the other three powers remain available if the spike was moved later?

      • That depends on how you kill the Mistborn. Even through the heart, the charge can vary based on the specific nerves you hit. Current knowledge of Hemalurgy does not allow for picking up multiple powers from a single Mistborn.

    • Does Southern Scadrial's mechanical version of the Metallic Arts require Hemalurgy? (Based on http://www.theoryland.com/intvmain.php?i=979#13)

      • "Hmm, interesting theory."

    • Is there a specific number of ideals before a Surgebinder's spren can change into a shardblade?

      • This depends on the Radiant order.

    • If Pattern hadn't been fully pulled into the physical realm, how did Shallan use his shardblade form six years ago?

      • He had been much closer to Shallan in the past, and Shallan almost gave up her oaths/ideals, but she did not completely reject him the way Kaladin had done to Syl.

    • Is there anything Hoid was scared of? If so, is that still around?

      • There are many things Hoid is scared of. He is really scared of Odium.

    • Is there a reason for the similarity between Nahel and Zahel?

      • That is a linguistic effect. The names share the same suffix in their construction. (No meanings were provided.)

    • Can one person form the Nahel bond with spren of two different orders?
Can one person hold two honorblades at once?

      • (Both answered in the same way.) Let's just say that it's not impossible.

    • (Someone in the line brought up the comet spren)

      • (He dodged around a bit before saying that the comet spren are important (might have said "to at least one order of Radiant" as well). Need to check the audio on this one.)

    • Question about the glowing shardplate in Dalinar's vision was RAFO'd when the person asked with reference to Syl getting up to human-sized, and/or it being a fourth Ideal upgrade.

    • Could a Seon/Skaze be crafted into a Shardblade?

      • (This answer sounded affirmative, with words like "potentially" involved. I got distracted a bit at the time. Again, I hope to hunt this out in the audio.)

Well, I hope that provides some fun to consider. Transcription will be a longer term project, though the fresher, the better I can counter the noise.

  17. Added a few more questions above:

    • Is Khriss the in-universe author of the Ars Arcanum?

    • Does Khriss owe Nazh a new coat?

    • Did you mean to tell mean to tell us about Khriss, or was that a slip up?

    • If a Mistborn is killed with a steel spike, does the spike carry all four Physical Allomantic powers? If yes, is the received power selected by the bind point used? Would the other three powers remain available if the spike was moved later?

    • Does Southern Scadrial's mechanical version of the Metallic Arts require Hemalurgy? (Based on http://www.theorylan...in.php?i=979#13)

    • Is there a specific number of ideals before a Surgebinder's spren can change into a shardblade?

    • If Pattern hadn't been fully pulled into the physical realm, how did Shallan use his shardblade form six years ago?

Signing begins in an hour and a half, so I'll say nothing more until my audio/transcription is ready. =)

  18. Depending on how much he is RAFO'ing the Khriss questions, could ask if he/she is one of the correspondents from the two letters.

I'll see if I can slip that in after, but I don't want to get too specific. I hope if I leave him room to talk, he'll say more. =)

I believe this was answered in the Mistborn books.  Don't have them handy at the moment but it was something like how it was a waste to use Mistborn because only one of the powers would transfer, and he (Lord Ruler or Ruin) preferred to corrupt a Mistborn and give him the spikes to enhance his abilities.

Thanks for the reminder of that passage. I suppose the part I really want to get at is whether or not a multi-charged spike could be placed in a new position to change the power it grants. I'm also curious about selective ability stealing via the correct bind points.

I also added a new question above:

    • Does binding oneself to the Oathpact improve the Surgebinding of an honorblade user?
  19. This will be my first time going to a book signing, since I was out-of-town for the Rithmatist one last year. And like many others in my position, I'm having a hard time settling on questions to ask. I have a few that I've been thinking about for a while, but if any have already been answered, I wouldn't mind asking something else. And if anyone has some more interesting ones, feel free to pitch them.

Edit: Signing has ended.

Edit Mar-17-2014: Here is a link to the introduction, public Q&A session, and reading, 31 minutes long

Edit Apr-16-2014: Full transcriptions are lots of work, particularly when life interferes with progress. Rather than continue this charade, I've gone ahead and prepared the audio for distribution. If you want to chip in with transcriptions of questions that interest you, please post them here so I can add them to my master list. You are also welcome to inquire about particular questions, and I'll try to get them transcribed for you.

Please be aware that the audio was recorded with a gator clip mike that I carried, so the audio quality varies with my proximity to the signing table. After the first four or five questions, I had secured a decent spot. The original file was three point five hours, but I've taken the liberty of reducing that to the "Good Parts" version posted below.

The audio in particular, and perhaps the question index as well, is rife with spoilers, so peruse at your own risk.

Here are Dropbox links for the signing audio, and an index for the 85 minute file.

  20. Do you know how tough it is to try creating wiki articles when you know that you are missing 80% of the reference materials? No? Maybe I'm just obsessive then.

Here is the raw data from Chapter One.

    +++ Epigraph

    Term: cutthroat

    Term: religious tyrant

Alendi has armies at his command.

    +++ Vin's viewpoint

    Person: Vin

    Place: Luthadel

    Street is paved with cobblestones.

Term: watch-hole -- hidden alcove in the side of the safehouse

    Watch-hole overlooks the street.

    Vin likes solitude.

    Person: Reen

Reen taught Vin how to survive.

    Reen betrayed Vin.

    Vin considers Reen's betrayal a lesson-by-example.

Watch-hole is a small space, accessed via trap door at back.

    Person: Ulef

    Ulef shuffles audibly on approach.

    Person: Camon

    Vin is hiding from Camon.

Ulef is a gangly boy. Nice, and naive for a skaa thief.

    Camon is angry regularly.

Watch-hole is cramped, but Vin thinks it is comforting.

Trap door leads to a run-down pantry.

The safehouse is concealed in the back of a store.

There are many rooms behind the store.

The lair is a tunneled stone cavern beneath the building.

They left by the back door.

Richer section of town is only a few blocks away.

Camon is attempting an intricate scam.

Scamming noblemen and obligators is very dangerous.

Vin thinks scamming is better than working in the forges or textile mills.

Back door opens to an alleyway.

Alley opens to a tenement-lined street in one of the many skaa slums.

    Street has gutters.

Skaa who are too sick to work lie in corners and in gutters.

Vin is wearing a hooded cloak.

    --- scene break ---

    Camon has squat, fat fingers.

Vin views Camon with hatred and rebellion, but doesn't let Camon see it.

Vin acts timid and cowed in Camon's presence.

    Term: boxing

Camon's job is worth thousands of boxings. A hundred times more than Vin is worth.

A scrawny skaa girl is worth tens of boxings in the underground.

Camon backhands Vin, hitting her cheek and throwing her against the wall.

Vin takes the hit silently, just another bruise.

Camon has a pudgy face, flushes red when angry.

Camon is annoyed, possibly by recent news.

Skaa rebellion to the several days to the north, provincial lord murdered, manor burned down.

    Person: Themos Tresting, provincial lord.

The aristocracy is harder to scam when concerned by rebellions.

Camon's anger is a sign of nervousness before a job.

    Power: Vin's Luck

A smidgen of Luck to calm Camon's nervousness. Changes his mind about hitting Vin again.

    Camon waddles away.

    Camon is a thief master

Camon is wearing a nobleman's suit.

Nobleman's Suit: white shirt, deep green vest with engraved gold buttons, long black coat, matching black hat.

Long suit coats are the current fashion.

Camon's disguise also includes several sparkling rings and a dueling cane.

Camon is among the best at playing a role, assuming he keeps his temper.

Rented one of the suites at the top of a local hotel. Not too lavish.

    Person: "Lord Jedue"

"Lord Jedue" had come from the country to make some final, desperate contracts.

Main room laid out as an audience chamber, large desk for noble to sit behind, cheap wall art.

    Menservants in formal steward's clothing.

    Person: Theron

Theron is tall, dressed in simple gray shirt and pair of slacks, with a thin sword tied at his waist.

Theron is the crew leader who came up with the scheme, brought in Camon to act "Lord Jedue".

Dismissive wave of hand is a nobleman's gesture.

    Term: Great Houses

Camon is arrogant enough to have come from a Great House.

Theron considers knifing Camon after the scam.

    Theron looks Vin over lingeringly.

Vin is wearing a simple white buttoned shirt and a pair of overalls.

Vin is scrawny with a youthful face, looks less than her sixteen years.

Vin considers using Luck on Theron to defend herself, but doesn't have to.

Obligator is coming to see "Lord Jedue".

"Lord Jedue" shouldn't be able to afford minor noblemen as servants

Noble manservants are allowed to wear colorful vests, stand with confidence.

Large numbers of skaa servants instead of nobles is a sign of poverty.

Reen left debts on Camon when he vanished.

Some thief masters would have sold Vin to the whoremasters instead of keeping her and her brother's debts.

Skaa whores are executed when the lord tires of them.

Camon says that Reen betrayed him.

Speculation: Camon appears to like hurting Vin, or people in general?

There is a tall indoor plant by the side of the suite's main room.

"Lord Jedue" has eight skaa servants in the room, plus Vin.

    Person: Prelan Laird

    All obligators are shaved bald.

Laird wears a dark gray set of robes.

    Ministry tattoos identify ranks.

    Term: prelan

A prelan is a senior bureaucrat in the Steel Ministry.

    Organization: Canton of Finance

Laird is a prelan of the Canton of Finance.

Laird has a set of lesser obligators with him, tattoos are far less intricate.

"Lord Jedue" stands to show respect to the prelan, something even Great House noblemen would do for Laird's rank.

Laird gives no acknowledgment to "Lord Jedue".

There is seating before the desk.

Skaa servant presents chilled wine and fruit to the obligator.

Laird treats the servant like a piece of furniture.

Prelan Laird is addressed as "your grace".

Normally, the lord would go to the Canton building to meet with the prelan.

Impoverished lords see physicians for medical advice.

Scamming in the Ministry stronghold is a bad idea.

"Lord Jedue" is trying to make transportation contracts.

The Canton of Finance has a Council that votes on contract proposals.

    Laird raises a tattooed eyebrow.

Term: Farwan deal -- is Farwan another House?

Canal boats are guarded by the owner's soldiers.

A House needs income to survive.

    Term: acolyte

The Canton of Finance's acolytes come down to Luthadel from the north.

Transport and escort price: fifty boxings a head per trip. Half the former price. Not profitable.

Theron's plan has been running for five years to reach this point.

The Steel Ministry is the force of bureaucracy and legal authority in the Final Empire.

The Steel Ministry is like a noble house; or perhaps a set.

A noble house gains power through wealth and good mercantile contracts.

There are political struggles between Ministry Cantons, like between noble houses.

Laird considers the offer, but still hesitates to accept "Lord Jedue's" logic.

Vin has been using her Luck for years; she was ten years old when she realized other people couldn't.

Vin's use of Luck is instinctive and trained to subtlety.

Vin's Luck pressed against emotions, lowering suspicion, fear, worry. Allowed target to become docile, calm and controlled.

Still showed uncertainty, so Vin pushed harder, and harder still, using all her Luck.

Laird agrees to take the new proposal to the Council.

And here is the sorted version again.

    +++ People

    Person: Vin

    Vin likes solitude.

    Vin considers Reen's betrayal a lesson-by-example.

    Vin is hiding from Camon.

Watch-hole is cramped, but Vin thinks it is comforting.

Vin thinks scamming is better than working in the forges or textile mills.

Vin is wearing a hooded cloak.

Vin views Camon with hatred and rebellion, but doesn't let Camon see it.

Vin acts timid and cowed in Camon's presence.

Vin takes the hit silently, just another bruise.

Vin is wearing a simple white buttoned shirt and a pair of overalls.

Vin is scrawny with a youthful face, looks less than her sixteen years.

Vin considers using Luck on Theron to defend herself, but doesn't have to.

Vin has been using her Luck for years; she was ten years old when she realized other people couldn't.

Vin's use of Luck is instinctive and trained to subtlety.

    Person: Reen

Reen taught Vin how to survive.

    Reen betrayed Vin.

Reen left debts on Camon when he vanished.

    Person: Ulef

    Ulef shuffles audibly on approach.

Ulef is a gangly boy. Nice, and naive for a skaa thief.

    Person: Camon

    Camon is angry regularly.

Camon is attempting an intricate scam.

    Camon has squat, fat fingers.

Camon backhands Vin, hitting her cheek and throwing her against the wall.

Camon has a pudgy face, flushes red when angry.

Camon is annoyed, possibly by recent news.

Camon's anger is a sign of nervousness before a job.

    Camon waddles away.

    Camon is a thief master

Camon is wearing a nobleman's suit.

Camon's disguise also includes several sparkling rings and a dueling cane.

Camon is among the best at playing a role, assuming he keeps his temper.

Camon is arrogant enough to have come from a Great House.

Camon says that Reen betrayed him.

Speculation: Camon appears to like hurting Vin, or people in general?

    Person: Themos Tresting, provincial lord.

    Person: "Lord Jedue"

"Lord Jedue" had come from the country to make some final, desperate contracts.

"Lord Jedue" shouldn't be able to afford minor noblemen as servants

"Lord Jedue" has eight skaa servants in the room, plus Vin.

"Lord Jedue" stands to show respect to the prelan, something even Great House noblemen would do for Laird's rank.

"Lord Jedue" is trying to make transportation contracts.

Term: Farwan deal -- is Farwan another House?

    Person: Theron

Theron is tall, dressed in simple gray shirt and pair of slacks, with a thin sword tied at his waist.

Theron is the crew leader who came up with the scheme, brought in Camon to act "Lord Jedue".

Theron considers knifing Camon after the scam.

    Theron looks Vin over lingeringly.

Theron's plan has been running for five years to reach this point.

    Person: Prelan Laird

Laird wears a dark gray set of robes.

Laird treats the servant like a piece of furniture.

    Laird raises a tattooed eyebrow.

Laird considers the offer, but still hesitates to accept "Lord Jedue's" logic.

Laird agrees to take the new proposal to the Council.

    +++ Places

    Place: Luthadel

    Street is paved with cobblestones.

    Street has gutters.

Alley opens to a tenement-lined street in one of the many skaa slums.

Richer section of town is only a few blocks away from the slums.

    +++ Organizations

    Organization: Canton of Finance

Laird is a prelan of the Canton of Finance.

The Canton of Finance has a Council that votes on contract proposals.

The Canton of Finance's acolytes come down to Luthadel from the north.

    +++ Culture

Term: watch-hole -- hidden alcove in the side of the safehouse

Watch-hole is cramped, but large enough for Vin to brush past Ulef.

    Watch-hole overlooks the street.

Watch-hole is a small space, accessed via trap door at back.

Trap door leads to a run-down pantry.

The safehouse is concealed in the back of a store.

There are many rooms behind the store.

The lair is a tunneled stone cavern beneath the building.

They left by the back door.

Back door opens to an alleyway.

Alley opens to a tenement-lined street in one of the many skaa slums.

Richer section of town is only a few blocks away.

Rented one of the suites at the top of a local hotel. Not too lavish.

Main room laid out as an audience chamber, large desk for noble to sit behind, cheap wall art.

There is a tall indoor plant by the side of the suite's main room.

There is seating before the desk.

Vin is wearing a hooded cloak.

Vin is wearing a simple white buttoned shirt and a pair of overalls.

Nobleman's Suit: white shirt, deep green vest with engraved gold buttons, long black coat, matching black hat.

Long suit coats are the current fashion.

Camon's disguise also includes several sparkling rings and a dueling cane.

    Menservants in formal steward's clothing.

Noble manservants are allowed to wear colorful vests, stand with confidence.

Servant presents chilled wine and fruit to the obligator.

Skaa rebellion to the several days to the north, provincial lord murdered, manor burned down.

Skaa who are too sick to work lie in corners and in gutters.

Some thief masters would have sold Vin to the whoremasters instead of keeping her and her brother's debts.

Skaa whores are executed when the lord tires of them.

Scamming noblemen and obligators is very dangerous.

The aristocracy is harder to scam when concerned by rebellions.

Scamming in the Ministry stronghold is a bad idea.

Canal boats are guarded by the owner's soldiers.

Dismissive wave of hand is a nobleman's gesture.

"Lord Jedue" shouldn't be able to afford minor noblemen as servants

Large numbers of skaa servants instead of nobles is a sign of poverty.

Impoverished lords see physicians for medical advice.

A House needs income to survive.

A noble house gains power through wealth and good mercantile contracts.

Obligator is coming to see "Lord Jedue".

Normally, the lord would go to the Canton building to meet with the prelan.

There are political struggles between Ministry Cantons, like between noble houses.

    All obligators are shaved bald.

Laird wears a dark gray set of robes.

    Ministry tattoos identify ranks.

The Steel Ministry is the force of bureaucracy and legal authority in the Final Empire.

The Steel Ministry is like a noble house; or perhaps a set.

    +++ Terms

Term: watch-hole -- hidden alcove in the side of the safehouse

    Watch-hole overlooks the street.

Watch-hole is a small space, accessed via trap door at back.

Watch-hole is cramped, but large enough for Vin to brush past Ulef.

    Term: boxing

Camon's job is worth thousands of boxings. A hundred times more than Vin is worth.

A scrawny skaa girl is worth tens of boxings in the underground.

Transport and escort price: fifty boxings a head per trip. Half the former price. Not profitable.

    Term: Great Houses

    Term: prelan

A prelan is a senior bureaucrat in the Steel Ministry.

"Lord Jedue" stands to show respect to the prelan, something even Great House noblemen would do for Laird's rank.

Prelan Laird is addressed as "your grace".

    Term: acolyte

The Canton of Finance's acolytes come down to Luthadel from the north.

    +++ Powers

    Power: Vin's Luck

A smidgen of Luck to calm Camon's nervousness. Changes his mind about hitting Vin again.

Vin's Luck pressed against emotions, lowering suspicion, fear, worry. Allowed target to become docile, calm and controlled.

Still showed uncertainty, so Vin pushed harder, and harder still, using all her Luck.

I think there should be a named character index page, mostly to give me a place to put information about people like Ulef. But would the index be a massive one for all of Brandon's Cosmere stories, or would there be one for each world, or each series, or each book?

  21. Edit: You could have avoided that by waiting three more minutes. =)

    Thanks for the compliments.

    Original:

As per your request, the Tresting article is no longer a "red link". Funny that you picked that item, since that was one of two items that I made pseudo-articles for already. Just for practice's sake, mind you. I figured that adding information to existing articles would be generally simpler than recreating the wheel for every page of the wiki.

Feel free to look it over and offer some structural improvement items. I'm not sure that I like the "Events" heading; "Plot Summary" is probably the better choice, thinking back on Wikipedia articles on fictional things.

I do plan on making a Tresting plantation at some point, though House Tresting is unlikely to go anywhere. (The current Lord inheirted land from his father. That's about all.)

Someone may want to link to Tresting from the Book One Summary page. I have no plans on poking at that edit box anytime soon. Particularly since it's time to sleep.

  22. In the interest of improving my knowledge of the Mistborn setting for use in the Mistborn Adventure Game, and ...

In the pursuit of improving my writing ability by studying the work of a professional author, and ...

In a desire to contribute to the 17th Shard fan community ...

I am attempting to drive myself bonkers!

More seriously, I have started yet another re-read of Mistborn: the Final Empire. Only this time, I am taking notes. And more notes. And a few more notes to go with them.

I have only gone through the prologue at present, and I am just wondering how many references do you want me to dump into the Coppermind? Because it looks like there are many missing references and extra facts that I could start loading in there, and I'm not into chapter one yet.

Also, do you want trivia bits like the first time a power is used in viewpoint and such? How about sections/pages for items like Foodstuffs of Scadrial and Life as a plantation skaa?

If you want to see the data mine, take a peek in the spoiler box.

    People: Kurdon, a burly taskmaster

Tresting scares easily, but keeps enough control to minimize letting it show.

    +++ Kelsier's Viewpoint

    Person: Kelsier

Stories are still told among the skaa of times before the Lord Ruler.

The skaa dwell in large hovels, housing at least thirty persons in one example.

The hovels are unguarded by night, because the skaa fear the mists.

In the hovel: central firepit, large cauldron beside. Crude tables.

Person: Goodman Tepper, skaa elder, barely into his forties.

Skaa craftsmen in cities are payed wages. Plantation skaa are not.

Kelsier is known among the skaa as the Survivor, a troublemaker.

Nobleman's food: Fine breads, fruits, cured sausages.

    A summerfruit rolls well.

Tresting's pantry is mundane for a nobleman.

Burning tin affects all the users senses at once.

    Person: Jess and her daughter

Tresting is law-abiding: he has the girls killed within a few weeks.

Inquisitors watch for half-breed children, who may have powers the Lord Ruler does not allow skaa to have.

    +++ Mennis's Viewpoint

Tresting might punish all of the skaa for the nighttime interruption.

Skaa are killed if they are too weak to work.

    Person: Shum, younger skaa man

    Person: Flen, skaa man (elder?)
