Mid-Range Game 1: The Stormfather and The Nightwatcher
Sir Jerric replied to Rubix's topic in Sanderson Elimination
If you want some blue text discussion, perhaps we could try estimating the number of cycles this game might last? Jerrek maneuvered through another fire-gutted building, unconcerned with the irregular footing. A large beam shifted under him, and he rode the twisting wood until a flat shingle lined up for his next step. That slid down the side of the pile while he balanced on one foot. A small hop up unto the slab of a collapsed stair, two more steps to reach a hole in the far wall, and he was back in the sun and smoke, on a gently sloped roof. The meeting had not gone particularly well. Too much tension, not enough leverage. The factions hovered around each other with knives poised. But where would the blades hit? Jerrek paused at the end of a crumbled wall, spotting a corpse. A older man, the sides of his head greying. A short sword still caught in rigid fingers. The other shoulder looked broken. Stabbed in the back? Why leave the weapon behind? Had the man been important, once? Jerrek figured no one would know. Kholinar looked more a crypt than a city. He'd had more sightings of the dead than of the living this day, and he knew that would only grow worse. Of course, avoiding the streets tended to bias that ratio, but he figured that joining the ranks of the dead would help no one.- 384 replies

Mid-Range Game 1: The Stormfather and The Nightwatcher
Sir Jerric replied to Rubix's topic in Sanderson Elimination
Jerrek sat with one knee up on the roof of a building overlooking a broad swath of Kholinar's mercantile district. People moved through the streets at random, in groups or even alone dispite the chaos. One person was literally moving at random, zigzaging through a market square in a manner that looked a hair too disciplined to be drunken. Jerrek hoped he won't have to deal with the fellow too directly in the days ahead. Looking across the crumbling city, Jerrek wasn't certain that holding these regular meetings would do anything to calm the riots. But then again, it was already becoming clear that people were coalescing into factions. Some supported the merchants, like those at the shop Jerrek had visited yesterday, assuming that money and goods would be the deciding factor of the future. Some threw in their weight with the original upper crust of the kingdom, whether from a fear of change or from a longing for familiarity, he found it hard to say. Still others thought to seize the opportunity and toss the class system out on its ear. The darkeyes were more numerous, so why should they be the ones under everyone's boots? Jerrek worried about such talk. That kind of talk started innocently enough, claiming to welcome all under the new order. But he thought that any lighteyes who sought to join their numbers would would wind up facing more than sidelong glances. In a situation like this, trying to pin down anyone's loyalties was going to be a complicated task. Eye color might have been a clue before chaos had taken Kholinar, but now? All he could see was that the only road to peace was control, and control was still divided. Jerrek wished that negotiations would be enough, but he knew that no one would listen seriously, not until the speaker had a clear measure of power. Blood would be shed before this was over. Far too much blood. Jerrek just hoped that he could keep old Farrah and the children out of the "debates".- 384 replies

Mid-Range Game 1: The Stormfather and The Nightwatcher
Sir Jerric replied to Rubix's topic in Sanderson Elimination
Jerrek dropped from the top of the courtyard wall. A few of the more timid plants retreated into their shells at the noise. Jerrek waited in a low crouch, but heard no sounds from the alley he'd left behind. Rising, he picked his way through the rubble that spilled away from the collapsed back gate. An oddity that. Most riots didn't go for tearing down worked stone. He assumed the original owners had installed a trap to make the house more defensible. Whatever the case was, the only way in or out of the house now was climbing the wall, and with the owners absent, the house fit Jerrek's purposes perfectly. In the back door, across the moonlit lounge, and around the dining table brought him to the kitchens. The hearth sat cold and shadowed, the racks bare, the shelves hollow. The empty room stood testament to any who came to scavenge. Clearly, these bones had already been picked clean and gnawed open. Jerrek crossed to the dark stairs and descended to the cellar, trailing his fingers along the finished stones of the wall as the gloom closed in around him. At the bottom, eight measured steps brought him to the second inset doorway. He turned and rapped on the wood in a staccato pattern. A few seconds later, he heard the bar slide free. "Greetings, Brother Farrah." Jerrek murmured. "Are the children still abed?" Farrah released a small stream of light from his thoroughly hooded lantern, the indirect glow sufficient for the two men to move without colliding in the dark. "They are. They'll be glad to see you on waking." His words were equally soft. "If only I could remain." Jerrek slipped the sack from his shoulder and placed it gently on the small table he'd moved down from the kitchen. "I need to be at tomorrow's meeting. If events allow, I'll spend some time here after my return." Farrah limped up to the table, his balding head looking more spotted with age in the dimness. "When might that be?" "I wish I could say. You have enough here to hold out for five days, with this. I'll try to be back by then, or to at least send someone." The old ardent sighed. "Be careful. The children will miss you." "You don't need to remind me. They make their opinions quite clear." Jerrek's smile was broad, but his eyes shimmered. He turned back to the door. "But tell them I'm watching out for them. That should get few smiles." He slipped out into the black corridor, pulling the door closed behind him. I'm new here, so I want you all to feel bad when you kill me. Mid-Range Game 1: The Stormfather and The Nightwatcher
Sir Jerric replied to Rubix's topic in Sanderson Elimination
Thanks for that, little wilson. Much appreciated. One more question: No restrictions on PMs to other players? CC to GM? (You know, that might be an interesting curse option . . . ) So each of the three factions has two people in their midst who are enemy spies, and two more who are friendly spies that may not be totally loyal, but should be useful while they last. And people aren't going to want to be too open about their roles in their faction docs since there are four untrusted persons in each. If I have this right, we have 24 players registered thus far: Edit: Now 25 players. (WeiryWriter) Weiriah (Lightsworn Panda) Jain (Gamma Fiend) Magam (Tulir) Trahar[/color (FeatherWriter) Lyla (Ashiok) Asphodel (Renegade) Rengar (Mailliw73) Mailam (Hello. My name is Joe) Joe (Binnut) Binnt (Macen) Ace (AonarFaileas) Aonar (jasonpenguin) Peng (twelfthrootoftwo) Twei (a smart guy) Sarmas (Adolin_Dustbringer) Jim Bob Dirt (GreyPilgrim) Greyeh Pilgras (Alvron) Rolav (firstRainbowRose) Hinah (lord Claincy Ffnord) Clanal (Wyrmhero) Heron (Sphinx) Nixi (dants) Atrus (Sir Jerric) Jerrek (jaelre) Khiriq That's ten people per faction doc, with two being Seventeenth Sharders loyal to the other two factions. And only three more people to guarantee a full set of roles. And with up to four kills per cycle . . . This is going to be wild. =)- 384 replies

Mid-Range Game 1: The Stormfather and The Nightwatcher
Sir Jerric replied to Rubix's topic in Sanderson Elimination
Jerrek ducked through a doorway as a band of darkeyes rounded the street corner, brandishing spears and rockbud mallets. He wasn't certain why they had elected to chase him. The shouting had come as he'd crossed the side street carrying a small sack of supplies from purchased from one of the few shops defended enough to stay open despite the riots. A quick glance at the band had been enough to convince him that conversation was not the way out of this encounter. Jerrek strode quickly across the beams that had fallen from the now absent roof, moving unerringly despite the irregular footing. He moved through the back chamber and slipped the bar off the back door. The hinges fell off the wall, and the door fell to the cobblestones. He winced, and a look up the alley proved that whether or not the darkeyes had noted his escape into the building, they had noted his exit. Jerrek sighed, and ran off down the alley. He'd have to lose this bunch properly before he could return to the safehouse. Signing up for my first game. I've looked at Werewolf games for a while, but I've never had a chance to join one. But after reading through some of the stuff here, I thought I'd give it a shot. Could I get a few points clarified? To qualify as active, does that require just the PM to the game master, or is the main thread post also necessary? Is there a global lynch vote, or are the three factions running a lynching apiece? What are the elements of the action PM? Lynch vote (global?, faction?, both?), boon power(if targeted), and role action; or Nightwatcher prayer (no other actions allowed). All four factions have a win condition of last faction standing, save for individual Seventeenth Shard members winning with either of their allegiances? Are all infiltrators aligned with Seventeenth Shard? Seems a bit odd, but I am minimally experienced at this game. And let me see if I get the Seventeenth Shard stuff with an Example: Adam is a Seventeenth Shard Nobleman, and he is spying on the Darkeyes, (He has access to three docs: Seventeenth Shard, Nobleman, and Darkeyes.) If Adam gets lynched or otherwise killed, he will be spooked and lose his access to the Darkeyes doc, and will have to play as a Nobleman for the remainder of his existence in this game. If Bill (Darkeyes, True Voidbringer) spies on Adam, the report will be "Nobleman". If Cob (Darkeyes, Fake Voidbringer) spies on Adam, the report will be "Darkeyes" (the expected result for a person of his "faction"). Adam will win if either the Nobleman faction wins, or if the Seventeenth Shard faction survives.- 384 replies

Overhaul edit of the Hero of Ages chapter summary is now live. It needs proper icons, when available, and full character listings. It also needs summaries written for the vast majority of the chapters. But the overall formatting is matched to the Final Empire chapter summary, as a starting point. And now, I need sleep. Good night!
-
If you happen to have some free time, might I request something? I'm working on an update to the Coppermind summary for Hero of Ages, and while the other two book summaries have a liberal splash of chapter icons, the wiki does not yet have a set of book 3 icons. I am aware that the image linked is rather small, and that the spattered ink effects make for a very difficult trace, which is likely the reason no one has tackled it yet. But personally, I would be completely satisfied with a sharper, font-style rendition. Just something that captures the shapes enough to be recognized as the same lettering. So if you'd be willing to give it a shot, that would be awesome. Thanks for considering.
-
My main problem is having no experience making SVG files. Otherwise I might have tried it myself. I did want to confirm, on the icon template: the first mistborn book uses metal names in the second field, while the second book uses numbers throughout. My work-in-progress has the first book's symbols, and therefore, names as the IDs. Will that be a problem when adding the new icons to the template?
-
I tried using the Hero of Ages chapter summary to do some research, and ended up dissatisfied. Now that I have done the research manually, I'm planning a big overhaul for the page. I plan to add epigraphs, chapter and part icons, and viewpoint characters for now, other characters and actual summaries to be added on later passes. I've also been working the formatting into line with the Final Empire summary. The reason for this post is the icons. I've inserted the original Mistborn icons into my work-in-progress, since the book three icons are not in the wiki yet. Is there any chance that one of the clever SVG artists could get a set together? Personally, I wouldn't worry about replicating the ink spatters. Just getting the general swirling shapes is enough for me to read them.

Questions for Omaha Signing, 3-13-2014
Sir Jerric replied to Sir Jerric's topic in Events and Signings
I rather doubt anyone else recorded the whole thing, save for myself. And if I get another chance, I certainly will ask for permission to place the mike at the signing table. I didn't arrive early enough to do better than I did. As for more audio, I've provided 116 minutes of the original 210, and I've listened to all of it at least twice. I can provide you with the original, uncut file (288 MB) if you want to slog through it, but I am almost certain that that I included everything that wasn't compliments, chit-chat, and cosplay content. Last but not least, thanks for all the transcriptions. You got several that I hadn't started yet. I do believe you skipped over the Shadesmar questions (49:47 through 50:42). Sometime soon, I'll start posting my transcriptions into the opening post. But not right now. Now is time to do other things. -

No. I hadn't. On the other hand, that statement is now in past tense. The audio in particular, and perhaps the question index as well, is rife with spoilers, so peruse at your own risk. Here are Dropbox links for the signing audio, and an index for the 85 minute file. 20140313_Sanderson_Omaha_QA_Reading.mp3 (31 minutes) 20140313_Sanderson_Signing_Trimmed.mp3 (85 minutes) 20140313_Signing_Questions_Index.txt I hope to be able to post my transcription progress soon, but I'm out of time for the moment. -
Welcome to the forum. I think the Skyrim soundtrack is a great pick, myself liking to listen to video game soundtracks as well. And seriously, nothing wrong with listening to a John Williams soundtrack. Why would you think otherwise? =) Can't say that I've listened to most of the (non-soundtrack) suggestions. Might have to look up a few at some point.

how many real world people are cosmere-aware?
Sir Jerric replied to king of nowhere's topic in General Brandon Discussion
I'm one of those people who tends to remember things I've read quite well, but I started reading Sanderson when he had only four published novels. When I finished Elantris and the Mistborn trilogy, I looked up his website to see what else would be available. Reading the annotations got me hooked, but even then, I saw the Hoid stuff as a simple easter egg. It wasn't until I saw the word Adonalsium printed in the Way of Kings that cosmere-awareness really hit me. Even despite the HoA typo. =) -

Agreed. WoR In other news, I have provided the introduction, public Q&A session, and reading as a 31 minute soundcloud file. A few more samples from the transcription, to pass the time. Ellipses mark sections where I couldn't tell who was speaking what. Parentheses are educated guesses. WoR spoiler: As for posting the audio, I'd really like to trim it down to just the sections with questions, and possibly sort those blocks by the question categories as well (book series, cosmere, magic the gathering, writing process / advice, news items). That much will take a fair bit of work, but I don't see that many people being interested in pouring over 210 minutes of poor audio to find a few of 138 questions that interest them. Much more user-friendly in manageable chunks. And easier to avoid spoilers too. I plan to start fiddling with that tomorrow morning, but I doubt I'll be done in less than a week with my current schedule issues. -

Sir Jerric replied to Sir Jerric's topic in Events and Signings
I'll consider it. Particularly for the public Q&A (10 questions) and reading, since the audio quality is much higher. After my trial run, I don't fancy transcribing ten pages of prose;at least, not until I get more practice. =) -

Sir Jerric replied to Sir Jerric's topic in Events and Signings
Here's the full transcript of that question, as a little practice run. In other news, the entire file is now labeled, and I can start the editing and transcribing process. The downside is that there are about 138 questions to deal with, so feel free to provide encouraging comments, or topics you'd like to have text for. Anything to keep me going. Other topics in the signing include, but are not limited to: other continents, the sometimes land/water inversion of Shadesmar, the number ten in Mistborn, why Wit asked Dalinar about Adonalsium, Radiants getting shardplate, the missing honorblade (rough audio here, sadly), bonding a spren and using an honorblade, the term Babsk, Soulcaster Ardents, the design of Tension and Cohesion is unfinished, Shallan's parents and Sigzil and Hoid. -
Questions for Omaha Signing, 3-13-2014
Sir Jerric replied to Sir Jerric's topic in Events and Signings
Two hours of three-point-five are labeled so far. Quality was better than I'd hoped, overall. Hardly something I'd want to post publicly, but, eh. Perhaps after I edit it down to a denser set of material. Is it common practice to transcribe everything, or just the questions? There was one RAFO before I got close, and only one question that I cannot make out, and its answer is only half a sentence too. I've got pretty good audio of paperstones' questions and answers. He has a good paraphrase of it there. And I've found Stormcrown's quote too. The flashback order has come up a couple of times, and there was a question about the state of the SA outline as well. Brandon's favorite Cosmere question in the first part was someone asking about Alethi hair colors and the possible connection with the Royal Locks from Warbreaker. He said the similarity is deliberate. Then he said I had just gotten a juicy bit for my recording. I'm a total stealth fail. =) -

Added a few more questions above: Is Khriss the in-universe author of the Ars Arcanum? Does Khriss owe Nazh a new coat? Did you mean to tell mean to tell us about Khriss, or was that a slip up? If a Mistborn is killed with a steel spike, does the spike carry all four Physical Allomantic powers? If yes, is the received power selected by the bind point used? Would the other three powers remain available if the spike was moved later? Does Southern Scadrial's mechanical version of the Metallic Arts require Hemalurgy? (Based on http://www.theorylan...in.php?i=979#13) Is there a specific number of ideals before a Surgebinder's spren can change into a shardblade? If Pattern hadn't been fully pulled into the physical realm, how did Shallan use his shardblade form six years ago? Signing begins in an hour and a half, so I'll say nothing more until my audio/transcription is ready. =) -

Sir Jerric replied to Sir Jerric's topic in Events and Signings
I'll see if I can slip that in after, but I don't want to get too specific. I hope if I leave him room to talk, he'll say more. =) Thanks for the reminder of that passage. I suppose the part I really want to get at is whether or not a multi-charged spike could be placed in a new position to change the power it grants. I'm also curious about selective ability stealing via the correct bind points. I also added a new question above: Does binding oneself to the Oathpact improve the Surgebinding of an honorblade user? -
This will be my first time going to a book signing, since I was out-of-town for the Rithmatist one last year. And like many others in my position, I'm having a hard time settling on questions to ask. I have a few that I've been thinking about for a while, but if any have already been answered, I wouldn't mind asking something else. And if anyone has some more interesting ones, feel free to pitch them. Edit: Signing has ended. Brandon is awesome--like Lift, but not so flashy. Full transcription will have to wait for a while, but I want to share a few things while it's fresh. He laid out his upcoming schedule again. The reading was the incubation magic (The Silence Divine), described as a short story. There were two mistcloaks, a Szeth, and a Chalking. Edit Mar-17-2014: Here is a link to the introduction, public Q&A session, and reading, 31 minutes long http://soundcloud.com/sir_jerric/2014-03-13-sanderson-omaha-qa Edit Apr-16-2014: Full transcriptions are lots of work, particularly when life interferes with progress. Rather than continue this charade, I've gone ahead and prepared the audio for distribution. If you want to chip in with transcriptions of questions that interest you, please post them here so I can add them to my master list. You are also welcome to inquire about particular questions, and I'll try to get them transcribed for you. Please be aware that the audio was recorded with a gator clip mike that I carried, so the audio quality varies with my proximity to the signing table. After the first four or five questions, I had secured a decent spot. The original file was three point five hours, but I've taken the liberty of reducing that to the "Good Parts" version posted below. The audio in particular, and perhaps the question index as well, is rife with spoilers, so peruse at your own risk.
