  1. Right, I forgot spoilers are allowed. In Dawnshard the Sleepless are having a conversation and one of them flat out states that they believe that “the Bondsmith” will destroy them. Since this is before Rhytm of War, it could only be referring to Dalinar. However, they are not all of the same mind on it.

    It’s in chapter 6:

“This is not unexpected, Yelamaiszin sent. It had a smooth, calming buzz. It was First, the oldest of the swarms on Roshar. Nikli was the Twenty-Fourth, youngest of them. I like the Bondsmith, for example, though I know he will destroy us.”

“He will not, Zyardil sent. Its buzz was punctuated and sharp. He has made the decision of Honor.
That is why he will destroy us, Yelamaiszin replied. He is more dangerous now, not less.”

  2. According to this WoB, Vasher was not merely hiding during the occupation of Urithiru:

    Spoiler

    Vishal Pani

Why didn't Kaladin seek help from Zahel during the occupation of Urithiru?

    Brandon Sanderson

Zahel... At some point I'll tell you what he was doing, but he was not available. That is a RAFO.

It came up multiple times, and there were various points where I was going to delve into it, and it just was one of those things that I just could not fit in. It is a thing that I wanted to, because we have this foreshadowing that Zahel's there; like, we have a scene with him and Kaladin to remind everyone that Zahel's around. And then we don't even bring him up. Alpha readers asked about it, beta readers asked about it. I could not find time for it. So maybe you'll get a deleted scene that is not a deleted scene, that's just a scene that I eventually write, showing what he's doing. This is one of those things like: what happened with Elhokar and the Herdazians and why does Lopen think he's a king? That scene just never fit into the books either.

Maybe I'll do it, maybe I won't. It's entirely possible, both options are possible. If I eventually never do it, I'll talk about it, but we are gonna have a little more Zahel in an upcoming volume of the Stormlight Archive, where some of these things coming out might fit into the story, to the point that your answers will come in that volume. There's a lot of various moving parts on what's going on with Zahel, and with Azure as well, and their relationship to Nightblood that there's just not space in the Stormlight Archive to talk about.

The prolong let us know that Gallar was working closely with Vasher to produce anti-void light. What if, during the occupation, Vasher was producing as much anti-void light as he could?

  3. It was in part 1 of the book. When John is looking over the pages he collected and he finds the list of questions the book owner is supposed to fill out in order to jog their memory of who they are.

“At the very top of the page was a simple, clean question: What is your name?
Below it, handwritten in blue ink, was the name John West.
Oh, hell. That was my name.
And beneath that: What was your profession before you became an Interdimensional Wizard™?
That part of the page was burned, but I could make out a completely unexpected word.
    Cop.
That awakened a vague set of memories. The academy. Wearing a uniform. Hot damn. I wasn’t a thief.
I was a specialist detective in the Seattle Police Department: Anti-Cartel and Illegal Augments Division.”

Okay, this one is the most important question: who is this?  My first guess was Iyatil, but her descriptions don't match... then I noticed the partly-visible skeleton.  What we have here is a masked Kandra.  Inquiring minds demand answers.

My guess is that this is Bleeder.

  5. I think your idea will work. However, just like in Dune Messiah where everyone using spice and doing tarot interfered to a great extent with Paul’s future sight, so also there is likely going to be interference from others once enough people start doing it. The more people that look at the future, (and specifically, the more people looking for the same things in the future) the less clear and the shorter sighted all future sight will become. We have precedent with Odium’s plan and Renarin’s interference in his ability to foresee the future.

    is that clear?

  6. Back to a cloak that can keep you warm, I be there is a way to awaken the cloak to use a brass medallion and constantly tap a desired amount of warmth. But of course you could just use the medallion yourself instead of using breaths to awaken a cloak.

  7. For how Edwarn’s son died, I think it’s possible that Harmony has a less inhibited kandra such as MeLaan assassinate him in some fashion in order to get Wax into the position Harmony needed him in. It’s been made clear that Sazed was very much involved in preparing Wax for his role, going so far as to use agents to directly manipulate him. I wouldn’t be surprised if he also made Hinston’s death look like it was caused by a disease.

It could be anything, really. Hoid comments on the oddity that Rosharans still use the term "hound" with axehounds, despite not having anything like the original thing "hound" referred to. Lots of odd etymology.

Szeth also calls a parrot a parrot, not a chicken.

What struck me the most is how similar young Szeth and young Kal are to each other in their desire to do things the right way and to do things perfectly. I am very interested in how their relationship will play out.

  9. My understanding of the Skybreaker oath progression is that it follows their philosophical development of justice, and therefore later oaths may override earlier ones. As Szeth swore,

“I swear to seek justice, to let it guide me, until I find a more perfect Ideal.“

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think it would be surprising if Szeth’s 5th ideal freed him from his third oath to obey Dalinar.

This is a plausible theory. Combined with Maya's revelation in the climax of Rhythm of War, I could see the old Radiants following this train of thought. I've always thought that Odium had a heavy influence on Alethi culture, especially with the help of the Thrill. Odium manipulated Dalinar in his youth and almost got Dalinar to be his champion. I think that the old Radiants were worried that Odium would be able to manipulate them in a similar way, and so broke their oaths out of fear of themselves. This realization of what Odium could do paired with the Dawnchant revelations in Oathbringer would make any noble order of powerful people be afraid of what they might do.

Agreed. Also, there’s the issue of the Hierocracy deleting/editing history and manipulating doctrine. We don’t know all the details there, but it’s not hard to imagine Unmade/human agents being involved.

  11. @Duxredux hey, don’t go away! It’s not easy on the forums to always come across as you mean to. We need people who think differently and ask the questions no one else is asking. Otherwise, theorizing just isn’t going to happen. I’ve posted a quote before that was saying the exact opposite of what I thought it was and had to eat my words.

For what it’s worth, you came off far less defensive than some regulars do sometimes.

You're right, we don't know the limitations of leeching which why I'm theorizing. This is obviously RAFO territory. If we're looking at resisting Investiture, then really, plating everything with Aluminum is simpler and more cost efficient, though it can restrict your own abilities which is why I don't think it will be a catchall solution.

I’m not trying to attack you. One of the purposes of the forums is to bring counterpoint to each other’s ideas. I think it’s possible Chromium might do some of what you are proposing, but the point I’m trying to make is that when I extrapolate from the evidence we do have, I don’t see it having the effect you propose.

My guess on savanthood would be that it would allow a person to be more selective in what investiture they are wiping from another person, just like a person who is very practiced with aluminum is able to be more selective in what they wipe from themselves. Say a leecher savant is trying to wipe a Twinborn who is actively using allomancy and feruchemy. I would guess a savant might be able to target only one of the kinetic investitures if they so choose. That’s what I would suggest based on how I understand Sanderson’s magic systems generally working.

    Kurkistan

If you're on Threnody and you get withered by a shade, are you better off burning Allomantic aluminum, or tapping Feruchemical gold?

    *laughter*

    [clarification on the question]

    Brandon Sanderson

They would both work pretty well. I would say if you burned aluminum, that would kind of have the effect that you are wanting it to have, which is the effect-- negating and sucking out, so that's probably safer. But the gold would work, too.

    Kurkistan

So would it be fair to describe withering as a kind of cancerous Forging-

    Brandon Sanderson

    Sure.

    Kurkistan

That just kind of slowly takes over your soul?

    Brandon Sanderson

    Sure.

Shadows of Self Chicago signing (Oct. 12, 2015)

    and also,

    Douglas

What benefit does an aluminum savant get? Yes, I know this would normally never happen because aluminum burns itself up. Suppose a mad scientist with a willing Mistborn test subject shoved a feeding tube down the Mistborn's throat to pump in a continuous stream of aluminum, replenishing it steadily so there's always a new unburned supply. Add another tube to pump out excess water if necessary. What would he discover? Alternatively, what would Sazed with his Shard-granted knowledge know?

    Brandon Sanderson

Ha, that IS a little silly of a method. However, on the extreme end of aluminum, I have in the notes the possibility of cleansing the spirit of unwanted effects of other Investitures. You'd get really good at this, and maybe even be able to cleanse the body of other impurities.
