  1. I was listening to the audiobook at the same time as my sibling (not THE sibling) on a shared Audible account and the app kept syncing our progress to each other. Because of this I missed the end of the trial in Lasting Integrity. I don't have the ebook or physical book so it has been hard to find which section I missed.

Could someone with the ebook please do a search and find the chapter number of the last day of the trial?

  2. I came on here with the same question. For Oathbringer, there was a PDF that was accessible on the Audible website and maybe the app. It had all the maps and in-book artwork. But I don't see that for RoW. Maybe Audible just dropped the ball and hasn't gotten it up yet. I know they were changing the chapter names during the day to match the book instead of just generic "Chapter 42" etc.

  3. In addition to Jasnah, Dalinar has a shardplate-like experience in his vision with Venli that I didn’t catch the first time.

    Quote

Above, the man in the blue uniform leaped into the chasm. He fell beside the hole's perimeter and stretched one hand toward Venli. His other ground against the rock wall, hand scraping the stone. Something flashed around his arm. Lines of light, a framework that covered his body. His fingers didn't bleed as they scraped the stone.

  4. @Pagerunner Sounds good. Thanks for editing those for me.

Out of curiosity, in the edit window, did you intentionally make the links relative paths (starting with ../../../) or does the Palanaeum platform convert it automatically when you insert a link back to Arcanum?

Edit: Never mind. I put in a few of my own and it looks like it does the conversion itself. Interesting.

  5. If we suggest an edit to a footnote because the WoB has been superseded or a RAFO has been answered elsewhere, should we include a link to the WoB that clarifies/supersedes it? The moderator would have to delete the link when they approve the edit, but it would save them time not having to find the WoB that gives the relevant information.

I just did two edits and included the links, but I want to be sure what the right protocol is for the future.

  6. Here are some relevant WoBs. It seems to me that all the rhythms and music are connected, but that it's something inherent to investiture. Allomantic bronze allows someone to sense the rhythm of a type of investiture, and Allomantic copper makes some static/noise that makes it harder to "hear" investiture. The first WoB mentions the listeners' ability to hear rhythm comes from the spiritual realm, not tied to the cognitive realm or the beads there. Unfortunately, we don't have the recording for the first part of the answer; it's transcribed from memory.

    Questioner (paraphrased)

Could a Soother prevent a listener from attuning a given rhythm?

    Brandon Sanderson (paraphrased)

No. A coppercloud could, but I hadn't thought about emotional allomancy interacting. See, the rhythm isn't your emotion and doesn't determine your mood. It is a direct connection to the spiritual realm. So I guess soothing could make it harder just like it makes anything harder, in the same way that driving a car would be harder. [recording starts here] And so, for the same reasons that you can, um, it is possible that a coppercloud can play with it.  Not a normal power of a coppercloud, but you’ve seen them do stuff similar.

Footnote: Question was cut off in recording, first bit reproduced from memory

Can a Seeker burning bronze detect a Surgebinder using Stormlight? Do different Surges have different pulses?

    Brandon Sanderson

    Yes, and yes. Good questions.

If you were really good at burning bronze, you could use bronze to distinguish between different types of Investiture from different planets even. And that sort of skill does exist in other magic systems.

Is it like a wavelength kind of thing?

    Brandon Sanderson

Yea, that's exactly what it is.

Footnote: It looks like Brandon misinterpreted the original question but eventually answered it, after a clarification.

Can an Allomantic bronze burner hear the Rhythms on Roshar?

    Brandon Sanderson

    Yes, this is possible.

    source ^^

This last WoB makes an explicit connection between Allomancy and Ropsharan Rhythms. Once we know this, it's enlightening to read about all the other connections Brandon makes of bronze detecting uses of investiture and copper preventing it.

    That will work, yes.

Bronze has always been my favorite allomantic metal. Could a Seeker learn to sense familiar pulses? Could Marsh, for example, have felt the bronzepulses of pewter, and been able to tell the difference between some Thug he'd never met and his friend Ham? Or is pewter is pewter is pewter?

    Brandon Sanderson

If he recognized something about the burning, it would have to be in the personal way someone was burning the metal. However, Bronze is capable of sensing other types of investiture. Expand from that as you wish.

That being said, I feel like I'm the only person who liked the James Yaegashi version.

I liked it too. It was a little bit weird at first, but I felt like the voice ended up fitting Lightsong's character. I was disappointed when I went back for a re-listen and it had changed.

I actually didn't like Michael's Nightblood voice. Was anyone else in the same boat?

That was the two conclusions I came up with. I figured if anyone knew more that this would be the place lol.

It is also discussed here, and they came to the same conclusion.

@Jungah Thank you for assembling this list! I only have the book as audio, which makes it harder to go back and review the epigraphs at a glance. I'm sure I'll come back to this thread many times to reread them.

Looking back at the Oathbringer preface, it makes me wonder how Adolin and Renarin will react when they found out Dalinar killed their mother. How soon before releasing the book will Dalinar tell them?

I believe there's a WoB that we can expect another Letter correspondence epigraph sequence in OB (and presumably in each SA novel?).

Out of curiosity, in the [epigraphs] will we be getting another Letter?

    Brandon Sanderson
In intend for the first five to all have letters.

WoB has confirmed we will at least get Wit in the epilogue. It was the same one where he confirmed Hoid left Jasnah before she got to Urithiru.

    Questioner 1
Does Wit go to-- uh... what's that one place in The Way of Kings... The one place they go to, aft... The end of the book. Uh, I can't remember it now. *someone suggests something* The city they go to at the very end.

    Brandon Sanderson
    Of Way of Kings?

    Questioner 1
    Not Way of Kings, uh...

    Questioner 2
    Words of Radiance.

    Questioner 1
Words of Radiance, yes. Does Wit go there?

    Brandon Sanderson
    Radiance. Urithiru?

    Questioner 1
Urithiru! Does Wit go to Urithiru?

    Brandon Sanderson
By the time that a certain somebody at the end shows up there. Wit is no longer with her, and nobody knows where he went.

    Questioner 3
Oh, he disappeared again! *others comment*

    Brandon Sanderson
He tends to do that. What's that? So Wit has been lost. He will show up at some point in the book... But yes, he will at least have the Epilogue.

Source for those who like to see the WoBs like me. I'm loving the new Arcanum site.

I think we'll also see another Rysn interlude, and probably Szeth interludes. Maybe another Kaladin dream/vision (in WoK he dreams he is traveling with the Storm, in WoR he dreams speaking to the Stormfather right before Szeth comes). We have accounts of the night of Gavilar's assassination in all the epilogues. And in the last two books we have Kaladin speak oaths and burst into stormlight in a tense situation.

    Sounds like Shallash to me.

It could also be that people just matched up the Unmade with the herald that seemed to fit closest. What we've seen of Re-Shephir isn't close to the poems and epics. Perhaps people took "midnight mother" and "beautiful herald" and made a connection that wasn't there. The mismatch in number makes me think that there isn't a straightforward correlation.

but rather searching for something it itself had lost.

Maybe it lost sapience, and that's what it is trying to understand in Humans. Maybe it was just a sapient spren turned into an "animalistic" spren. Perhaps it started out as a  listener.

My guess is that TC 3 will die in the end of part 2. And my guess is that it's Adolin.

That's a very gutsy prediction. I would miss him. But I also like the idea of seeing Renarin as Highprince in this book.

Also, Part 2 was supposed to be lore-heavy.

I like the sound of that but hadn't heard it before. So I have to post the original WoB for anyone else who might be in the same boat.

    Quote

Part Two turned out well, though it's a slower, more lore-and-character focused section. (It includes some viewpoint chapters I think you'll find unexpected and interesting, though it has less action than other sections of Stormlight.)

    source:

My money is on Kaladin being the missing viewpoint. And as much as I want to see some Jasnah PoV right now, I don't want her to disappear for the rest of the book, which TC3 does. So maybe we get some Adolin or Navani viewpoints? It would also be very enlightening to have some Taravangian viewpoints.

Edit: Maybe not Adolin since Brandon said the part 2 viewpoint character would be unexpected..

Well, the text doesn’t seem to be clear to me, but is this a floor to ceiling pillar? I pictured it in my initial reading as more of a podium type thing rather than a full column, but the text doesn’t indicate either way I think.

It is indeed floor to ceiling. The things in the other rooms seemed like something else to me, maybe transporters. It would be neat if they were related though.

    Quote

The main mass in the chamber undulated, faces appearing from its tarry surface—pressing out as if trying to escape. There was something beneath the enormous spren.  Yes, it was wrapped around a pillar that reached from the floor of the circular room to its ceiling.

Hmm. I wonder, what if the known Urithiru is mainly the "public" face which they use to house all the kingdoms for Desolations? While the real Urithiru they use as home to the KR is hidden below/in secret corridors.

I had a similar thought. Housing above, sanctuary/temple below. That would also make the important stuff easier to defend. I’m looking forward to seeing how extensive the tunnels are down below, and if there are any living quarters.

I think we have a WOB saying that there were nine desolations, including Aharetiem.

If you have that WOB I'd like to see it because I've never heard that before, and I'm doubtful about the whole one desolation per herald thing until I do see it. And you are right about there being uncertainty, though I was addressing the idea that all the unmade came into being post oathpact.

I was also curious about this WoB that lots of people are mentioning. So for any others who want the direct source, here ya go!

So I just got back from the book signing Brandon held today, I asked him about the time between each of the original 99 desolations.

    Brandon Sanderson
It turns out that the number 99 in the stories was made up, and that there were much fewer of them. He also then stated that the cosmere runs along a 10,000 year gap and that Roshar falls right into the middle of the timeline. He ended with "That should give you a perspective of the timeline and events of the desolations". I figured that if anyone wanted to know a bit more of Roshar's history they might find this interesting.

  15. I’ll start after the prerelease chapters. With the time I’ve spent reading on the forums, I actually caught a lot more in the chapters that I would on a regular read-through (or listen). And I’m really excited to know that happens at the end of the book. I know I’ll reread Oathbringer all-the-way through again before the next book. Maybe twice even. So I’ll get another dose of Part 1 then

Interesting thought. If Dalinar stuck someone to a wall Could she use friction to move?

Or could she suck in the Stormlight he used to stick her with? We know Kaladin and Shallan can take back the stormlight they use to lash/lightweave. But can one KR take stormlight being used by another KR's abilities?

@eveorjoy I like the theory and hope we do get to see Lift on screen.
