  1. I am inclined to doubt it gets told to Lift. Partly because lift doesnt seem self reflective enough to actually get much from it, and partly because Lift is halfway across the world. If she stays primarily an interlude character then she will be busy keeping azir from falling apart. ( and giving us a window into how the rest of the world is faring) ::facepalm:: i never noticed the parallel with Wandersail and Szeth......
  2. Good point... but that wouldn't stop him from needling her as much as possible. I am still looking forward to just what they talk about on the way back to wherever they're going.
  3. OK... I am officially looking forward to this conversation with Jasnah...... after all, they have, what, a week together walking back to civilization... Darnit... I am already having trouble waiting for the next book...
  4. Jasnah and amaram's reaction to each other could be antipathy between an atheist and a zealot. i guess what i want is not for the nahel bond to NOT be what reforges a person. You have to choose to reforge yourself and the result is a person who can be bonded. Then, regardless of what happened to them, they are in control. And yeah, i agree there is something somewhat creepy about dicussing what bad things have happened to the characters or will happen to them so they can form the bond.. I hope the idea that only broken people can become radiants doesnt become common knowledge in world... If it were me, i would HATE having everyone i met wondering what bad thing happened to me to make me develop magic. Jasnah is the character i identify with the most. I want to get to know her better. she plays cards so close to her chest that the only himts we seem to have on what is going through her mind are from the WoR prologue and what shallan observes. We get a little from navani, but a lot of that is colored by the fact that navani knows jasnah doesn't want navani close.
  5. Yeah...that quote does certainly imply something happened....particularly since shallan is the one who makes the observation. i consider her probably the character most capable of reading other people( as a matter of survival ). I just dont necessarily think it had to have been done to her personally... she status as the kings daughter would have provided some protection that would probably not have extended to any companions she had with her at the time. Being unable to prevent injury to another could have been just as hard... Particularly since the night of galivars assasination we see how much effort she spends trying to protect her family. ( and in galivars case, failing) ::shrug:: Honestly, i am not wedded to the idea of galivars death being the whole of it. ( and clearly, it cannot be ), but theres really soooo much we dont know about her history and probably wont get for many years.. Whatever happened, jasnah is probably the only person who knows about it and she hasnt told anyone...
  6. My take on jasnah ( mostly from the WoR prologue ) was that she is a control freak. I am still inclined to think that the final break would have been galivar's death. This cannot the be whole of it, since ivory found her 'interesting' before then, but the end of that section is heartbreaking to read.. In spite of her efforts to protect her family, Her father is dead, she watched it happen, nothing about it makes sense...and she cannot find any answers.... I also wonder if she really is as proficient in elsecalling as people assume. Sure she's (probably) bonded ivory for years, but until the end of wor, we never see her manifest a shardblade or make use of transportation. Navani indicates that she avoided assasination attempts and simply 'reappeared somewhere else', but that could have been instinctive. prior to the end of wor, i dont think shes said more than two ideals. i think one of the things shes searching desperately for is WHAT she is supposed to say to progress, but the heirocracy removed any written record of the ideals. I think she found them in shadesmar.
  7. Hmm.. If he was using the incident to confirm jasnah as a radiant, then he must know enough about how soulcasters work to recognize that hers was not being used properly, right? Unless he was counting on the sheer size of the boulder to require more stormlight than what jasnah presumably carries on her person at all times and plans on checking how many went dun after. If he was fishing when he asked shallan for a picture, he chose to do so on a average/lower than average day. Shallan comments that he is not terribly effective at debating jasnah that day and notices he feels he has done something unforgivable.
  8. It took me three or four rereads of WOR to realize that when Yalb tells 'the new guy' how important galley duty is, he is merely trying to foist off an unwanted job on 'the dumb newb'.. I always read Pattern's comments about yalbs lies to be referring to his exaggeration about meeting the king.. He is probably actually admiring yalb's ability to manipulate the new guy. Also, back in Kholinar pai and lhan walk through the oathgate room. ( interlude 12) Other things i noticed that may or may not be real..... Jasnah unconsciously nods and shakes her head a number of times... Is she responding to something Ivory has said to her? Shallan's 'i am terrified' truth always seemed weak to me.... What if Pattern took it, not as a statement of 'right now, i am terrified', but rather ' my standard state of being is terrified'?
  9. My mother is also a natural lefty that attended a school were teachers would hit you with rulers until you learned better. She calls herself left handed, writes with her right hand, and is rather resentful of her schooling in the matter. I suspect that the ability to learn to write with an off hand depends on the person and circumstance. As a lefty, i have wondered how left handed women handled this in roshar as well.
  10. First time poster... I believe I read a comment Brandon made somewhere (WoB..... Words of brandon?) where someone asked how many chasmfiends have successfully pupated in the past 6 years and he said there was massive unexplored environmental effects due to the harvesting of gemhearts and compared it to whaling. Shallan does discuss this with adolin in WoR and if i recall Jasnah comments ( in galivar's biography?) that other creatures known for large gemhearts have been hunted to extinction. Also of note... I think one of shallan's sketches in WoK indicates that a chull will pupate into a large treelike thing if left to its own devices. I have assumed that in their chull stage they are incapable of breeding. Edit: looking this up, the chull life cycle diagram is in WoR and appears to be part of a different in-world book about caring for chulls? The tree thing is the final stage of chull before natural death (?) and may be irrelevant for breeding. Finally.... I am curious if santhids actually have gemhearts, given their size and the fact that so little is known of them.
