  1. Being a surgebinder isn't a crime, nor is it morally wrong. Hunting surgebinders is not just. You might have an argument for it being morally right to hunt them, if it will prevent a desolation. But not just.

I'm trying to comment on Nalan's motives and perspective. And I only mention these things because I think they prove he's an unlikely candidate for being the masked man talking to Szeth.

I'm not at all saying he's right for what he's doing. Just to be clear.

  2. Nalan doesn't serve justice in his current state. He holds himself to the law, but that isn't always the same as true justice. He'll ignore people who've committed major crimes while he'll do extensive research on his targets in hopes that he can uncover some minor crime that he can use against them.

You're right, in part. Nalan explains that he's doing this because he's specifically chasing people who can invest. Because he feels they will give rise to another Desolation... therefore, in his eyes, they are a priority for this reason and he searches for wrongs they have done so he has excuse enough to get rid of them.

Seen from his perspective, how is he not serving justice?

Also... after not wearing a mask in any of his scenes, why wear one with Szeth and refer to Taravangian as his master?

  3. Ok, so a bit of fun.  We know about the known members of the seventeenth shard already, right?  We also know certain known worldhoppers at this point.

I was hoping we could share our wishlists of people we want to see (or already suspect to) become worldhoppers of some sort and show up on other worlds at some point in the Cosmere.

For me, I have to say it's Wan ShaiLu.

I really hope she is still about and cosmere-aware at this point.  She was betrayed by Hoid at the beginning of her saga and when last we saw her, she went off to hunt him down!  Other than shadesmar being a bad idea on Sel, she seems a perfect fit for the seventeenth shard.  Buy hey, if Galladon managed, why wouldn't she?  I'd love to see her finally catch her prey or use her forgery elsewhere in the cosmere.

Who do you guys want to see worldhop and show up again on another world?

  4. Nalan has NOT been serving justice.  He is bound by the laws of the land, but follows his own agenda, and will gladly exploit loopholes in order to further his own goals.

The Herald of Justice does not serve Justice?  He exploits loopholes?

Right after one of his minions slit Gawx's throat in Lift's interlude, Nalan is quoted as saying “Without the law, there is nothing. You will

subject yourself to their rules, and accept the dictates of justice. It is all we have, the only sure thing in this world.”

His "own agenda" is Justice itself.  He seems to see the Law and Justice as one and the same thing.  And by his very nature, he seems to hold these things as absolutes without question.  He seems to be focusing his attentions on certain surgebinders (attempting to deny the next Desolation), but still the Law seems to take priority with him.  As evidenced by the ending of the Lift interlude when despite his efforts to capture/kill her, the Law granted her pardon and Nalan let her free.  This is Justice.  Once the law changed and Lift was pardoned, Nalan didn't even care about his previous objectives with the girl.  Despite her crimes, despite even her investiture, he left her alone.  This is what I mean when I say he serves Justice. When Lift asked him why he hunted her, he responded "In the name of justice." Maybe I missed the times he exploited loopholes to further his own goals.  Maybe I missed them, honestly.

Another reason I doubt that the masked man is Nalan is because we were constantly reminded of how emotionless Nalan/Darkness was... and the monologuing we see in the scene with the masked man and Szeth doesn't quite match up with this.
  5. First: He could have guessed that if he told Szeth there and then he was cooperating with Taravangian, Szeth would run away or try to fight him.

Second: no, everything Nalan did was to stop a Desolation. He does not serve justice or law, he just makes sure he does not go against it either. Plus, if what Szeth did was acceptable to him, it is pissible he is OK with what the Diagram forced Vargo to do, and both share the goal of fighting the desolations without care for how many they kill on the way.

EDIT: Not thatI think it was Nalan. Graves seems more likely to me, I just think the Skybreakers and Diagram do not oppose one another and may have a frail alliance.

Yes. I can more readily accept that it might have been Graves.  It's time to pick up WoR again.  B)

  6. I like the idea that it was Nalan, I also thought this and was going to post before I saw someone had said it. We need more information to be sure, though. Did Szeth show any sign of recognition in the Epilogue?

See? That's the thing.  If it were truly Nalan, then that would have been a great opportunity to reveal that at the end of WoR when he recruits Szeth.

My other doubt about it being Nalan is this: As a herald of the Almighty... specifically The Herald of Justice, are we entirely sure he would be allying/coordinating himself with Taravangian (even temporarily)?  Everywhere Nalan has gone and everything that we know of him doing has been to serve justice itself.  Are we sure he'd align himself with the types of actions Taravangian has been taking?

  7. Another interesting thing about the person who gave Szeth the list is that there was no need for him to use the Soulcaster. He was already there. He could just have left the way he came. Soulcasting the wall away was unnecessary. Why did he do that? To show Szeth that he had a Soulcaster? To hide the way that he had entered? Some other reason?

That is a great question! I'm sure whoever he was, we haven't heard the last from him.

  8. On spoilers: I added mention of AoL spoilers to the title. There's no need to do more spoiler tags than that in the WoK forum. Any thread made here is assumed to have WoK spoilers. Typically, threads dealing with multiple worlds should go in Cosmere Theories.

On topic: I always thought it was Mrall, personally. He's got that psychopathic mentally-weird thing going on.

     Thank you. And sorry...

  9. Ok, Friends.  Help me out here.  For I have gone and convinced myself of something crazy!

Sorry, I'm new to the forum and I don't know how to do that cool "spoiler" button yet.

Please be aware that this theory mainly concerns The Stormlight Archive: Way of Kings and will have spoilers for the stormlight series. But because of said theory, this post will also contain spoilers from the Alloy of Law. So please continue reading at your own risk!  If you have read both books, please give your thoughts on this theory.  Many thanks!

Toward the end of Interlude-6 when Szeth finds Gavashaw dead along with his [former] master Makkek,  he's greeted by this dark figure who bears Szeth's Oathstone and gives him Taravangian's kill list.  I'd like to discuss who this dark figure might be...  Because I don't believe he's just some unimportant messenger.

    1. Szeth doesn't recognize this man's accent.  This seems to be a gentle suggestion that the figure might originate off world.  I figure Szeth would have traveled many places since becoming Truthless and having his Oathstone traded so frequently. Szeth guesses that the dark figure's accent might be Alethi, but he isn't sure.
    2. No real description of the dark figure is really given except that his voice is "male and deep" so a physical match can't really be made.  The figure even wore a mask.  So all we can really go on and take clues from is the shrouded man's words.
    3. Monologuing - This shrouded figure is heavily opinionated for someone who is presumably unimportant and needs to only deliver proof of the Oathstone exchanging hands and the new orders from the new master.

That being said, what the man starts monologuing about is, i feel, key to discovering his true identity.

    He says things like:

    • "Are you satisfied with this... are you satisfied with trivial crimes?"
    • "What a waste... You are squandered."
    • "You are a work of art... a god."
    • “But do you not rebel against this frivolous use of your skills? Were you not meant for greatness?”
    • "It's time you stop wasting your talent."

Very interesting statements. He had virtually no reason to monologue to Szeth... and combining that with his strange accent, I keep feeling like this shrouded figure is more important that the interlude makes apparent.  He shows up nowhere else in the series (as of yet) to pick apart more clues.

These statements come dangerously close to many things said to Waxillium Ladrian back on Scadrial.  My vote is that the masked and shadowed man giving Szeth his new orders is Miles "Hundredlives" Dagouter who is now on Roshar.  As implausible as it seems, he may not actually be truly dead.
    1. It was never explained how he was still able to heal after all of his metalminds were apparently removed.  Therefore we don't know to what extent his death was an act or irreversible (including his missing pulse).
    2. We know nothing of the remains/body of Mile Dagouter.
    3. Beyond that, the cosmere has "Returned" and fabrials that can revive people from the unthinkable (like with a certain someone at the end of WoR).  Miles Dagouter is my best guess as to who this man might be... he doesn't actually have to have survived his experienced on Scadrial to be alive on Roshar right now.
    4. He's Miles Hundredlives Dagouter... he's been through a lot worse.  He probably had gold implanted in his bones.
    5. He was very confident when he went up for execution.  Why would he have been so confident if he knew he'd eventually run out of gold during the execution and die anyway?
    6. As for what he'd be doing on Roshar?  Probably doing the same thing he was doing on Scadial. Serving someone, believing in a higher cause.  Like Taravangian.

    Thoughts?
  10. If we're talking about fantasy casting, shouldn't we be talking about "voice casting" rather than simply casting?

IMO something like SA would best be represented in ultra-high quality CGI.  Like on the level of Beowulf (2007), or perhaps even Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within (2001).  As long as it's high-level CGI and very serious-toned, what could better bring Roshar and Stormlight to the screen than CGI?

That being said, I think Michael Kramer does the best Dalinar imaginable!  Although many others could do amazingly as well, if their physical appearance isn't a deciding factor.

  11. Hey there folks!

My name is Michelle and I've been a huge fan of Brandon Sanderson's work for a little over a year now, particularly the Cosmere novellas. I used to have fairly long commutes to work and so I listened to many of the audiobooks. I'm a big fan of Michael Kramer's narrating (his Jasnah voice is the best!)

Stormlight Archive would have to be my #1 favorite, but that's closely followed by the Mistborn series. I've also read Elantris and Warbreaker, and I've got Emperor's Soul next up on my list once I complete Shadows of Self.

I've been lurking these forums for quite some time now and I figured it was time to join in on the conversation! I'm an artist as well and have some fan art I'm excited to share!

Thanks for taking your time to read this! I'm looking forward to participating in discussions :)

Michael Kramer is the best!  He and Kate Reading did an amazing job with Stormlight books.

Like you, I also have a long commute, and long work days.  I have the Stormlight audiobooks on a 45hr loop to get me through my weeks.  Welcome to the 17th Shard!

  12. Hello!  I'm new to the 17th Shard.  Well, as a member anyway.  I've been loving all over this forum for quite some time now and I finally decided to join up!  Something tells me I.... I belong here.

I've read the first Mistborn trilogy three times, The Alloy of Law twice, Shadows of Self once (so far), Warbreaker three times, Elantris twice, and my favorite... the first two Stormlight Archive books (The Way of Kings and Words of Radiance) four times each.  I literally can't get enough Cosmere!  ...and especially The Stormlight Archive!  I've also knocked out Shadows for Silence and Sixth of the Dusk one time each.

Before you say I'm crazy, let me explain. Mainly, I've read them so many times because I like to come up with theories and pick apart clues Brandon leaves about that larger events within the cosmere and the true identity of many of the masked characters.  Then I like to check other books to see if I was right about certain theories and if other events and storylines reinforce my theories.  My stomach is full on the bread crumbs Brandon Sanderson leaves in these books!  Why?  ...because it's fun.

Don't get me wrong on this cosmere obsession of mine.  I've read Steelheart and Firefight three times each as well, plus Mitosis once.  Those are truly awesome books and I can't wait for Calamity. Let's not forget Legion and Legion: Skin Deep! Brandon Sanderson is the frig'n man!   However, The Stormlight Archive is my baby... and I die a little more each day that passes between cosmere books  :(

Hopefully you guys can be like my support group.  :D
