Nah.
Hoid was going to play Tom Bombadil.
He and Kaladin can throw boots at the screen together!0 -
I'm more curious to know what would happen if Hoid had kids. With Jasnah.
By Telenel'elat... That's a terrifying thought. They'd be zebra-headed monstrosities wrapped in the skins of men.

Yay, I'm not the only one that (mildly) ships Wit and Jasnah!

I can see Jasnah spending all of her time in front of the computer screen reading and researching on the internet for days on end. She would just ignore the cars.
Actually, I can see Jasnah with her own private plane.

They go to Kholinar, where the riots are going on.
In order to catch everybody's attention, Kaladin flies to the shattered plains and rides a chasmfiend back, which silences the crowd.
Hey! I can dream!
Wit would be proud. He's just a step away from teaching them to sing!

Yes, yes you are.
Dalinar would probably want a Nissan GTR. Kal would love a Ferrari, while Navani would drive a Tesla.
I dunno, I'm seeing Dalinar in a van too. Like, I can see him having a really nice car tucked away from his glory days, but until recently he hasn't been able to use it because he was too busy driving his kids around.

Also, now I really want to see Edgedancer Big Brother Adolin chasing down Lift trying to get his dinner back.

Most superstitions are nonsensical, but never underestimate the power of superstition! If you know anyone who plays sports they will have loads of superstitions and routines they must follow because they feel it needs to be that way to keep winning or playing well. I see this being just like most athletes superstitions who follow a pregame ritual before their games. Some will eat the same meal or wear the same socks or what not (I believe it is Mashawn Lynch with the Seattle Seahawks who eats skittles before and during every game). It is all nonsensical but if you win you think hey it must be because of the meal or the socks so i will keep doing it.
So if Adolin wants the chicken give him the chicken and get out of the way so he can out duel someone i say!
Oh my badness, I just realized: Lift has to eat something in order to use her Edgedancer abilities, right? What does Adolin have to do before every duel in which he uses his Shardblade? EAT CHICKEN!
Coincidence? I think NOT!

My feeling as to the big 'lesson' that Kaladin will learn in book 3 (assuming it follows the basic patterns of talking with Hoid -> rationalizing an issue -> developing as KR) is that sometimes he has to let people risk themselves to protect other people (e.g. 'I will protect those that cannot protect themselves' -> 'I will let those that can protect themselves protect others'). We see shadows of this in TWoK and WoR already, e.g.
And near the end of WoR:
I could see an arc where Kaladin finds himself spreading too thin trying to protect everyone from everything at Hearthstone and Kholinar, only to fail because he can't concentrate himself at the important places. Lirin is a good candidate to help him learn the lesson. Also, I think this fits well with the concept of Windrunner squires; it seems likely they'll play a prominent role in the next book.
This might be one of the ways Windrunners and Edgedancers may be 'mirrored' - While they both pursue similar goals, Windrunners are commanders, and have to look at the big picture, while Edgedancers are combat medics, and have to be focused on the immediate situation.
This actually makes a lot of sense in my opinion, especially since his going home to Hearthstone would be the perfect time to review the one lesson from Lirin he never learned: when to let go.

Dalinar would despise Denethor with every bone in his body.

Actually I'm positive something was happening. Recall that Pattern was attracted to Shallan before all this went down. At the moment I'm wondering if Shallan was actually a member of the Davar household.
It is only a strong suspicion at this point. Though one with good cause I feel.
I will say, considering how Lin treated her, I think Shallan is definitely of house Davar. Being only half-legitimate, however, would explain why her mother would be so willing to sacrifice her. I'm not sure how I would feel about that, since it would, to a slight degree, lessen the horror of what her mother tried to do, but it would explain a lot of the trouble in the Davar household.

Too predictable. Everyone expects this will happen because Kaladin has always been the hero, the savior. He will save Heartstone, assert his leadership, horde everyone to Kholinar, quell the rebellion there and worked up how to open the Oathgate.
Somehow, I doubt it will be this easy... way too predictable.
What if, for once, Kaladin was not the hero they need for this task?
Heartstone saves itself without Kaladin's help.
Kholinar does not want to have anything to do with Kaladin. Why would they listen to him? Who is he anyway? Besides, why would Kaladin side with the depraved queen? I see much issues here which leads me to believe Kaladin will be powerless to stop the rebellion...
He can't always be the hero and somehow, I doubt his story arc will resume itself to him saving the day at the end of every book.
I don't see him siding with Elhokar's wife, but I do see the events in Kholinar devolving into a Reign of Terror like the French Revolution, where everyone with even remotely light eyes are being murdered for no reason. If Kaladin ends up in Kholinar and sticks with his oaths, he would have to protect those who were innocent.
Edit: Okay so maybe I just really want to see Kaladin as the Rosharan Scarlet Pimpernel. Don't judge me.

I think Jasnah would be more interested in the whole "GIANT FLYING CHICKEN!" angle
Particularly from a taxonomic perspective. Shallan is going to be doodling quite a bit. I think the general look of the world will be much more interesting to her than random silly plot inconsistencies. All being seasoned soldiers, I think Dalinar/Adolin and Kaladin would be a bit put off by the fact that clearly nobody on screen had any understanding of actual combat tactics.

Eh heh heh, right. Giant chickens. I wonder what animal they would think was the strangest? Or, would they be more worried about the fact that the plant life doesn't move, like Rysn in Shinover?

Pray tell, what's a *normal* reaction to a situation like that supposed to be?
Do keep in mind that Lin had just killed a man in a violent bare handed struggle in order to protect his daughter. The guy was running purely off parental instincts at that point. It doesn't seem remotely odd that when faced with the aftermath of such a horrible event, he'd hyper focus on trying to comfort his traumatized daughter.
Heck. It's almost as much for his benefit as Shallan's. If he focuses entirely on Shallan, he doesn't need to think about what his wife tried to do.
I guess I just expected more grief. Some sort of outward acknowledgement that this was a terrible thing to happen. As it is, I think associating a lullaby with the act of killing her mother probably did more damage to Shallan's psyche than actually being upset would have. Honestly, the fact that he could just shut his emotions off like that freaks me out a little, and it makes me wonder if there was more happening in that household even before Shallan started showing signs of being a Surgebinder.

So, um, is it just me, or did Shallan's father seem pretty messed up even before he took the fall for her? 'Cause, I don't know about you guys, but to me it doesn't seem like normal behavior to just kinda pick your daughter up and sing her a lullaby after she just stabbed your wife, even if said wife was trying to kill her first. I don't know, something about their whole relationship seems a little off to me, right from the very beginning.

The Eagles actually makes more sense than at first glance, the whole point of the Fellowship was to sneak in under Sauron's radar cause if he knew about Frodo he'd have stomped over nabbed the ring and crushed everyone without trouble. The Eagles are good for emergency rescues but they're also massive magical flying servants of the Valar who are exactly the sort of people Sauron would be watching to make sure the Valar weren't going to intervene. They also never leave their mountains under normal circumstances and only really do so at the request of Gandalf or one of the other Istarii.
Flying in on the Eagles would sent up a big red flag saying 'Gandalf is here guys!' and then Sauron would have just met them at Mt Doom, crushed their resistance and taken back the ring.
Haha, I get the feeling you and Shallan would get along well. You can both prove Jasnah wrong!

I was stuck cleaning today, which means I had lots of time to think about the Stormlight Archive. I got to wondering, you know how Adolin has mixed hair because of his foreign blood, and because genetics are apparently different on Roshar? Well, what would happen if Adolin were to marry Shallan, who has red hair, and their children were to get all three hair colors? Would one hair color claim dominance then, or would they have mostly red hair, with streaks of black and blonde? Would enough intermarrying between cultures result in a child with rainbow colored hair?
How do these things even work?4 -
I love this one, my wife and i have often thought if they can ride or be carried by the eagles why didn't they just fly to Mount Doom and drop the ring in? Granted then there is no story, but still. it seems pretty obvious as a solution. I can see Jasnah pointing out the logical flaw with the story.
Also thanks for posting about this. pretty fun to consider.
I would think they would all be like, what are all those animals? Why does Rohan have so many horses? Where are all the pieces "of wet slime" and why are we missing "a disgusting crab thing with seventeen legs" that slinks "across the rocks together on an insufferably rainy day?"
Would they be confused by Ents and ask are they Treespren? Is Sauron like Odium? i think they would have so many questions about the LOTR and be confused by the world. It would be funny to hear their thoughts.
Oh, gosh, I hadn't even considered the ents (I was watching the Fellowship)! I dunno, considering all their plant life seems to move around already... I can imagine them being really thrown off by Treebeard talking.
Btw, I totally imagine Kaladin throwing a boot at the screen when Gandalf dies. Oh my gosh, I can see Kaladin getting into it waaaay too much and having to have Syl remind him it's just a story.

Watching LOTR, and I just finished the Stormlight Archives. I can’t help imagining how the different characters would react to it.
I imagine Kaladin would be the one that rolls his eyes at the idea of popping in a movie, but then gets really into it and keeps getting mad at Shallan and Renarin, who keep making predictions and snarky remarks. Dalinar would be shouting at Merry and Pippin’s stupidity, and then pause as he realizes how disturbingly similar he is to Gandalf. Meanwhile, for some reason I imagine Adolin relating on a deep level to Legolas. Navani would pat him on the head and distract him with a kiss. Jasnah would be the first to question why they didn’t just use the eagles, and Elhokar would complain that he wanted to watch The Hobbit instead.
Edit: When I say Navani pats him on the head, I'm referring to Dalinar, not Adolin.

Personally, I think Dalinar is going to be incredibly angry with Adolin, but I also think there is a reason the next book is going to involve Dalinar flashbacks, and the reason is because Dalinar is going to have to confront his past and decide how much he can really do to Adolin without also condemning himself. In his youth, I think Dalinar would have done exactly the same thing, which means whatever happens to Adolin, he'll be wondering if it should have been done to him as well. I think the ramifications mentioned in WoB will involve Dalinar having to confront his past as Adolin confronts his future.
As for Shallan, I think she'll handle it better than people may assume. We've seen her kill people before. Storms, strangling her father while singing him to sleep was one of the creepiest moments in the entire book! I think she'll look at Adolin and see a reflection of herself. Whether she'll consider that a good thing or a bad thing is still up in the air, but I don't think she'll hate him for it.

Actualy, Roshar is full of life, with rockbuds rollin around, vines hidding behind hills, grass in holes in the rock and cremlings crawling behind stones. Plus, even if you were to use a desert and then put the plants there, most barren locations on earth aren't just bare rock like Roshar.
Well, that is why I suggested Southern Utah. Lots of rock, not a lot of grass. And I'm not sure any adaptation will want to focus too much on the flora and fauna. Yes, it makes the world interesting, and I love it, but if someone is going to make a film adaptation, they'll want to be more focused on the story anyway.

If they attempted live action, in addition to CGI expenses for the magic system there would be the issue of basic world characteristics. Yes, you've got spren all over the place, but you've also got all these plants and animals that are unique. Unless it's a scene based in Shinovar, that means you can't do a shoot with grass. This micromanagment would be really expensive compared to something like Game of Thrones, where most scenes they can just head over to the countryside.
Honestly, I always imagined most of the books taking place somewhere relatively barren, with very little plant life. Shoot somewhere like Southern Utah and it shouldn't be too difficult.

Honestly, I like the idea of either, but I worry that an anime adaptation would turn a lot of other people off. I personally enjoy anime, but I also know a lot of people who hate it, and if SA gets some sort of adaptation, I'd rather see it get a wider audience. I can't help thinking about the film adaptations for the Lord of the Rings, where most people I know couldn't take the animated versions seriously, whether or not they were well-made. I'd hate to see that happen to The Way of Kings.
As far as cost concerns go, I'm not sure it would be so problematic as people tend to think. Any adaptation like this would need to come up with its own techniques (again, thinking back to Lord of the Rings and the motion-capture technology that brought Gollum to life). I agree that by the time there are enough books out to make an adaptation feasible, there would be much more technology available, and as long as whoever got the rights to it was competent enough, I think they would be able to come up with creative ways to portray this world without spending an unholy amount of money on it. Honestly, my biggest concern would be white-washing the cast.

Honestly, I think Kaladin is going to find Roshone with no power left after the Everstorm, because everyone is too busy trying to survive. I think he'll take one look at him, say, "Nope, you're not worth my time," and move on with his life. Maybe if he'd come home earlier he would have fought with Roshone, but the with everything that's happened since, I think he'll have realized there are more important things to worry about.
I think he'll expect Lirin and Hesina to be upset with him, but as soon as they see him they'll ask why he didn't come home sooner. Maybe it's cheesy, but I kind of imagine Lirin actually crying to see one of his sons come home. (Also, I kinda doubt it will happen, but my dream is to see what would happen if Lirin and Hesina ever met Dadlinar).
As for Laral... I think Kaladin will put his feelings for her to rest. I think at this point she's one of the biggest "what-ifs" he hasn't dealt with yet, and a big part of letting go of the pain in his past will be letting her go as well. I do think he'll help her in whatever way she needs, but in the end, they'll most likely part as fond friends.
And maybe it's not completely within the "Hearthstone" plotline, but I love the idea of Kaladin getting caught up in the rioting in Kholinar... but this time on the side of the lighteyes!

Ah. As the self-proclaimed expert on any theories pertaining Adolin (I feel humble today)
allow me to answer.Adolin will revive his dead-Blade is a fans-favorite theory, so you are far from being the only person to ever think about it. It has been abundantly discussed in various threads ever since the release of WoR.
Of course, the initial arguments in favor of him doing so are pretty much what you summarized: he talks to his Blade, he pours his secret fears into it, thoughts he does not openly share with other people, he reveres it and more importantly he refuses to name his Blade out of respect for what it once been. He does not know the truth, but his instincts brought him so close to the truth, it is nearly sad.
That being said, people have asked questions to Brandon in that regards... Would it be possible to revive a dead-Blade, despite what Pattern and Syl may think? The answers have been... careful. Brandon first started by saying it would be nearly impossible as the poor spren had the equivalent of their hard-drive being pulled out and to revive them, one would need to replace it. He then stated it could be possible, but extremely hard. Later on, he confirmed the original knight would be needed to revive a dead-Blade... in most cases. Finally, he did state Adolin could do it, providing he says the oath and does... something more.
So all in all, we gathered it is not completely impossible, very difficult, but feasible providing the right elements are put into place. In all his careful answering, Brandon has always left the door open for such a plot to happen. However, my personal understanding is whereas it is not impossible, it would be a rather exceptional event not to be reproduced: I thus do not back down any theories involving massive dead-Blade revival.
Other interesting facts about Adolin's Blade, it is an Edgedancer, so reviving it would place him within this order, a fact strongly disputed by many forum members. Prior to receiving this information, most forumers were placing him within the Dustbringer (whereas I once supported this theory, I now think it was a very bad fit: we were reading him so strong in the beginning). Upon finding out the beloved Blade revival theory would put in within the Edgedancer, I feel many have left the wagon as despite my strongest effort, convincing others Adolin is a very good fit for this order have not yielded much result

Adolin becoming a Radiant would never be a cliche... The handsome, rich boy never gets to have super-powers and never ends well: he is always portrayed as a villain or an idiot. As far as cliches go, the fall from grace from the Prince who had it all, watching him hit rock bottom, disgraced and shunned by those he loves, but still managing to find within him the strength to care for a dead-Blade everyone has forgotten about while self-sacrificing himself for those he cares for, thus settling his fate as a proto-Edgedancer certainly is not one. I for one would love to read it, perhaps not in these exact words, but something along those lines. There are far greater cliches in SA than Adolin pulling it of to make it to Radiant, despite all adversity, despite the fact no live spren wanted him to begin with.
So whatever questions you may have, shoot. It's always my pleasure as this is, by far, my favorite topic of discussion.
Welcome to the forum.
And actually, after taking a closer look at typical Edgedancers, Adolin seems like the perfect fit, very refined and elegant (think looking through a fashion magazine during the highstorm). In addition, it may be different in Alethkar, but here fencing (or modern dueling) is considered the ultimate gentleman's sport. Plus, it would just be fun to see Adolin and Lift working together at some point.

I get the feeling they would laugh at Shelob. "That's their big monster? A chasmfiend would eat that for lunch!"
