  1. Deathspren have red eyes--they're beings of Odium, possibly related to one of the Unmade. I wonder what business they might have with souls on the brink of passing.
  2. We know that supposedly, Copperclouds protect the Smoker from emotional Allomancy. However, in the annotations we learn that Zane has been Allomantically manipulating Vin's emotions. Was her Coppercloud down? Or is it, as I suspect, one of Brandon's rare oversights? I suspect it because protection from emotional Allomancy is mentioned when introduced and in the ClubXBreeze chapter, but rarely otherwise. In Yeden's ball, we witness Vin dazing a Tineye and Smoker with duralumin+brass, but the narration/characters doesn't mention the noteworthiness of the achievement. I mean, duralumin cracks copper emotional protection! You just destroyed the assumption that Smokers were immune to brass/zinc! Either the book doesn't comment on it to reduce the word count or Brandon forgot about that minor perk of copper halfway through writing. (Another example of emotional protection being cracked would be the Lord Ruler's Soothing.)
  3. Ah yes, being misled into guessing something correctly. It reminds me of the readers guessing Atium has Mistings, but for the wrong reasons. (Atium is assumed to be a regular metal that should have Mistings, when in fact Atium Mistings shouldn't exist and were specifically engineered by Preservation)
  4. Good catch on the Broken One! Here's something else to think about: We know that Investiture cannot be destroyed or created. When consumed, Investiture presumably returns to the Shard that emitted it. In that WoB, we learn that Investiture follows its own version of the laws of thermodynamics. Brandon compares Investiture to energy; it's safe to assume the First Law equivalent is: "The total Investiture in the Cosmere remains constant" (the total energy of an isolated system is constant; energy can be transformed from one form to another, but cannot be created or destroyed.) I propose a possible Second Law equivalent: The amount of corrupted Investiture in the Cosmere cannot decrease over time. (the state of entropy of the entire universe, as an isolated system, will always increase over time.) Think about Nightblood's corrupted Investiture: does it return to its Shard of origin, like normal consumed Investiture? If so, does the Shard simply cleanse the Investiture? Doubtful, as there'd be no narrative purpose to Investiture corruption, bar aesthetics... Does corrupted Investiture become unusable? Does it become only usable for twisted purposes? Does corrupted Investiture, once consumed, possibly return to Odium, instead of the Shard of origin? After all, it's possible Gavilar's sphere is corrupted Investiture (due to its similarity to Nightblood's black smoke), and the sphere was suggested to be related to Odium... Now, there are multiple reasons why the mists would pull away from Nightblood... but here's one of them: Mists (Investiture) consumed by Nightblood is raw power lost forever, either unusable, permanently twisted or possibly stolen by Odium. (edit: or Endowment... thanks Oudeis!)
  5. Drehy the bridgeman and Ranette--the woman gun maker in AoL--are gay. Rushu, the female ardent who wonders why only men have beards and why long hair is considered feminine, is oblivious to male advances, and suggested to be gay/bi, genderqueer or at the very least critical of Alethi genders as social constructs. One wonders how many gay Alethi are simply shoved into the Ardentia. edit: Aaaand I got ninja'd.
  6. It's embarrassing but I wish I still remembered my high school statistics classes so I could provide the actual margin of error; suffice it to say that I'm fairly certain what you're calling 93.75% confidence does not work that way, and the actual confidence level is much lower because of the sample size.
  7. Sigh--I'm probably overanalyzing this. Was trying to find ways Brandon would spin Nightblood into TSA's narrative without relying on either purposely vague or out-of-place Cosmere explanations, and I came up with this. So, for what it's worth... We know that Nightblood's black smoke is corrupted Breath. However, since Nightblood is on Roshar, it will/has eventually run out of Breath. Nightblood is going to be emitting corrupted Stormlight. In fact, Szeth compares the black smoke to Stormlight. But wait! We know of something else that looks like Stormlight and is black. Gavilar's sphere. There is no explicit comparison to Stormlight here, but the fact that it is seen is a sphere is a strong parallel. A lot of people even dub it Voidlight. We know that this Voidlight is related to a Shard different from Stormlight's. (Stormlight is distributed by the Stormfather, but makes plants grow, so it's unclear whether that hints towards Voidlight being related to Odium, or perhaps Cultivation) What can we infer from this potential connection? A few ideas: - The Voidlight in Gavilar's sphere might be atypical Investiture, one that has been 'corrupted'. - Nightblood might not be able to feed on Voidlight, same as being unable to feed on corrupted Breath. - If the black light (Voidlight) is connected to Odium, Nightblood and his black smoke may have a connection to Odium as well. (Doubtful, but would integrate Nightblood into the narrative completely--although having Odium interfere with Awakening is forced.) - Even if the sphere and Nightblood are not related, we might be seeing more of corrupted Stormlight in other places in the story, later on.
  8. Yes, I think Hoid was here to meet Shallan (though maybe he had other motivations, as well). The 17th Shard wants to keep the status quo, containing Odium. Hoid encourages Radiants to emerge, which somehow due to the rules binding Odium, grants him more power. He wants the Radiants to return and not just contain but defeat Odium. He knows Shallan is a surgebinder, and he came to help her grow, just like he told the story about personal responsibility to Kaladin.
  9. Whatever the rules, the thread title appears on the forum front page. For the sake of those who haven't finished or started WoK, it'd be better to change the title...
  10. Vasher needs Breath, or any Investiture to survive. He can't force Breath out of others. It's unlikely (though possible) that he can suck in Stormlight without a Nahel bond or an Honorblade. He'd need a hack. Luckily, Nightblood, an Awakened object, can steal Breath, and can feed on Stormlight. Make the leap of faith that you can further Awaken an object to transfer siphoned Investiture to its owner, and you get a nice, plausible cross-magic hack. If we assume Vasher does need a hack to feed on Stormlight, this is reasonable enough a way. It's a long shot, but I guess you could Awaken, for example, a flute...
  11. The problem is that Hemalurgy recipients can have more than one power, in which case calling them a Misting anything can be misleading. If Bloody Tan was, say, a Brass misting who hemalurgically gained the ability to burn atium, replying 'yes' to the question of him being an atium misting would be like denying he can burn brass... (I don't think he burns atium, though.)
  12. Dragonsteel Prime Some people have reviewed the book on Goodreads (as is their right, I should say, it being public), so if you want to go ahead and spoil yourself the fun, you know where to go. The freely available sample chapters of the to-be-rewritten Liar of Partinel also give some information about Hoid's origins. as stated by the second letter in TSA. Why Wit tells Kaladin he began as words on a page.. I don't know. There are WOB that indicate Brandon does not want to break the fourth wall. I've read a joke theory that Hoid is a "thinking illusion" created (by the mortal Hoid the 2nd) via Yolen Lightweaving. The truth is likely more complicated, but...
  13. I subconsciously imagine some book characters as characters from anime. Disregarding character descriptions makes me feel like a poor reader, it's embarrassing. Shallan Now that her description sank in, I pretty much imagine Shallan like on this illustration: However, at first I imagined her as this character from a volume of The Twelve Kingdoms unpublished in the US: Why? Because her name is... similar (Shushou), they both travel and they're both bratty. Wit Because I knew about Hoid's wiki page before I started reading The Stormlight Archive. *shrug* Adolin Sometimes the way I imagine Adolin is inspired by Char Aznable from the original Mobile Suit Gundam, because both are very dignified, blonde, good at the sword, and Char's mask reminds me of a helm. Huh. Lift Cute, energetic kids. Single-episode character from Space Dandy. Jasnah I... don't know how this happened. Sorry. Also a single-episode character from Space Dandy. Okay, a last one, though there are others. This one is good. Ladies and gentlemen, KELSIER. Yes, this is a Japanese schoolgirl. This is the avatar of the guy who introduced me to Mistborn. His name is Kuiper. Kuiper, Kelsier. Close enough.
  14. Stormlight is green for me, go figure. I don't think there is a correct pronunciation for Cosmere names. That is to say, even the pronunciations used by the audiobook readers and Brandon remain approximations of what the characters actually say. More, much more than likely, the in-universe languages have sounds our tongues cannot even pronounce, and widely different intonation systems from English (which is very easily summarised by a stressed/unstressed syllables split, whereas e.g. The Chinese Dialects each have at least 4 distinct and crucially important nuances of "stressed", and the French language has no predefined stressed syllables and stresses words differently depending on sentence construction). Case in point, Brandon says, "I say Vin's name like an American would, but everyone in world would say it with a French accent. Same goes for Kelsier, (which they would say Kel-syay.) Again, I say it as an American would, but then I'm not from the Central Dominance." And another relevant WoB: By the way, I say REN-uh-rin, SHAH-lin, YAS-nuh and the other Js with J sounds, AH-doh-lin, Demoux and Renoux the French way intuitively because they look ostensibly French, but Kelsier and Vin the English way.
  15. Given that a Feruchemist can "keep a vague recollection of the memory as well as a stored copy which would degrade faster", if we assume Allomantic compounding makes a memory stronger (let's say ten times although I believe this depends on the user's Allomantic potential), then a copper Compounder can store a quintuple strength memory into a coppermind while also retaining the same memory in mind at quintuple strength. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
  16. Ising the High Imperial of the still being of awesome.
  17. Well, everyone is blind behind the ears. If Spook can dodge by feeling airflow behind his back then he can do it in front of him. I don't know if it would be nearly as efficient as Daredevil, though.
  18. "Ascension" is a gradual process and one doesn't need the entire power of a given Intent to be a Shard of Adonalsium and have the powers of one (as evidenced by live Shardholders creating splinters). Hence, it makes sense for Vin to be able to use extra-Allomantic powers with the raw power of Preservation before the threshold where her body sort-of-implodes.
  19. Enough mist can turn a human into a Shard of Adonalsium, and surely Preservation himself (herself, in the case of Vin) had more power than just the allomantic powers.
  20. Err, sorry for the accidental downvote. Welcome! SA is so so great.
  21. You're right, I was assuming that Feruchemy charges a whole metalmind gradually, but it is charged in parts. So, compounding is relative to the size of the feruchemical charge and your allomantic potential. It would even make theoretical sense for a very weak allomancer (say, a with a Feruchemist with a very weak hemalurgic spike charged with Allomancy) to gain less attribute than stored from compounding.
  22. The amount of health gained by compounding is not proportional to the amount stored. It's proportional to the size of the metal and your allomantic potential. Compounding is, more than a way to gain more return on investment, simply a way to use allomancy but gain feruchemical attributes ('compounding' is sort of a misnomer). You can then store the feruchemical attribute into metalminds for later use so you can draw upon it with the finer control feruchemy offers. For Miles, instead of having to spend time sick to store up health, he can just turn Investiture into health (the way a Pewterarm/Thug turns Investiture into strength) and then store the health in metalminds.
  23. I forgot what this was so I went looking for it.
  24. I watched it in theatres, and later at home with my family! It's not my favourite effort by Isao Takahata (the award goes to Only Yesterday, but I haven't finished Anne of Green Gables which has the potential to turn out awesome, and I can't decide if I like Heidi more), but Kaguya is definitely the culmination of his oeuvre. It takes the original tale and fills the holes, notably by adding an explanation for Kaguya being sent on Earth (to experience the beauty of mortal life as well as the tragedy of losing it). Fittingly, it also expands a lot on Kaguya's time on Earth and the beauty of life, depicting at lengths the vibrance of nature and using long shots of character animation uncannily realistic and detailed for its scroll-inspired art style. It's a very similar effect to Takahata's lingering shots of wildlife in Heidi, Anne of Green Gables' magnified appreciation of life and Only Yesterday's artistic praise of country life and longing/nostalgic portrayal of childhood. This film is not only an adaptation of the oldest extant Japanese prose tale, it's the culmination of Takahata's career as an animation auteur, reportedly seven years in the works (like the famous Redline) with Oga Kazuo's greatest background art yet and remarkable animation by several animators even by Ghibli's standards. It's as much about the original folktale as it is about the transient beauty of life, a theme that the director knows how to animate best and added himself into the movie.
