Trapper is catchy. Doesn't only apply to Bloodmakers, though.

Kelsier could only talk to people (who believed in him as a deity) while he was holding Preservation's power (HoA annotations), between Leras' death and Vin's ascension. By now, it's possible he went onto the after-afterlife that even Sazed cannot (yet?) interact with.

Good thinking. Perhaps what separates a powerful Feruchemist from a weak one has to do with the amount of power they can store in a given volume of metal. And perhaps this level of power can be gauged by the amount of empathy that they feel towards metals they can use. Going on a tangent here, your second paragraph makes me think of Atium... When Allomancers burn Atium, they are not drawing power from Preservation (or are they...?) but from Ruin's body, i.e. the Atium itself. Does it suggest that Allomantic strength with regard to Atium is independent from how much Preservation is in your sDNA / how strong your connection to Preservation is / how much Lerasium you ate in your life? Does it have more to do with the volume of Atium you're burning? Does a stronger connection to Ruin increase how much power you can get from an Atium bead? In other words: if you Hemalurgically steal someone's ability to burn Atium, is the ability really weakened? This has to do with whether Atium Allomancy is really end-positive and of Preservation in some way (in which case the ability would be weakened), or whether it's strictly of Ruin (and end-negative somehow), and more power is considered a "loss" (in which case the ability would be... strengthened?). Sorry for the ramblings. Any relevant theories would be great, though!

What happened to the Lerasium bead TLR was holding onto?

We know that Hemalurgy steals weakened versions of magical powers. Since Allomancy is end-positive, it's easy to imagine how Allomancy can be weakened: a decreased connection with Preservation, meaning the amount of power (Investiture) you can draw is reduced. Another, compatible possibility is a reduced amount of control over the power (e.g. emotional Allomancy would be harder to control). Since Feruchemy is end-neutral, I'm not sure what would be a weakened version of the power. The power you use is entirely your own, not Investiture taken from Preservation of which the amount varies between users. The books are unclear about what separates powerful Feruchemists from weak ones, other than their cunning and metal reserves. - Maybe Hemalurgically acquired Feruchemy is harder to control? The users would have less freedom in the rate and speed at which to store and tap power, for example unable to tap enormous amounts of strength at once, or required to tap faster than they might want. Perhaps they do not have such restrictions, but cannot accurately control how much to tap or store? e.g. they are free to store a lot of health at once if they wish to, but might just end up dying in the process, storing just a little too much because of their lack of fine control. - Another possibility would be that Hemalurgically acquired Feruchemy becomes end-negative, and the users need to store more than they will be able to tap? You would store 10 kilograms for an hour, and be able to tap 8 kilograms for another hour, or 10 kilograms for 48 minutes. Stored memories would appear less vivid every time you consult them and store them back. Do you know of any relevant WoB? Any more theories regarding the net loss?

This thread is amazing. A project for next April Fools' Day... edit: Also, I want to date Human. This should be a thing.

I don't know that Electrumminds store adrenaline. Determination, sure, but do you have something to quote to confirm it works with adrenaline?

Scadrial has a very bright and large patch of stars. It is, however, only visible to Mistborn and Tineyes, due to the nighttime mists. One of the more poetic quirks of the setting. Duralumin and Nicrosil don't enhance the next effect but every single metal you or the target are burning at the moment you start burning Duralumin/Nicrosil. This includes the Duralumin itself, so I'm not sure combining it with a Nicrosil boost makes a difference. It raises the point that while Duralumin is expended and can only be used once before needing to reload, Nicrosil can probably be used repeatedly without losing all your reserves with each use. We know that BS intends/intended to make a Nicrosil misting the protagonist of the 2nd trilogy (3rd now, since Wax and Wayne is a thing) so Nicrosil is super important though. It also suggests we will really not see many Mistborn (and, hence, Duralumin users), if at all, in the "second trilogy". The Nicrosil combinations are going to be interesting... Bendalloy, Cadmium, Gold and Electrum have potential (considering what Atium+Duralumin did).

I suppose I might as well paste the answers to my questions here, though only the second one is slightly interesting.

This blog will have things that have already been explored by others but which I need to lay out for myself. Or potentially new ideas which I need to refine (and check if others have not yet theorised on) before posting on the forums. TLR uses Lerasium for Feruchemy: 1. No answer to whether TLR and Hoid use Lerasium for Feruchemy 2. TLR did not eat a Lerasium bead 3. However, he did take a Lerasium bead for himself Conclusion: The Lord Ruler either uses Lerasium for Feruchemy or some other unclear purpose. ...what happened to that Lerasium bead?! Was it lost forever in the corpse of The Lord Ruler? Hoid's use of Lerasium: 1. Hoid’s bead was—He originally got it because he wanted to be an Allomancer. 2. BS suggests Lerasium can grant the power of many shards (though he could also simply say that Hoid has the power of Preservation) 3. It rewrites your spiritual DNA, and there are ways to do really cool things with lerasium that I don't see how anyone would know. Were most Mistborn to just burn it, it would rewrite their genetic code to increase their power as an Allomancer. 4. Lerasium has Feruchemical and Hemalurgical powers. 5. "Let me first assure you that the element is quite safe. I have found a good home for it. I protect its safety like I protect my own skin, you might say." This suggests that Hoid keeps the Lerasium inside his body, either for Feruchemical purposes or as a spike. However, Hoid is very bad at hurting people, suggesting Feruchemy. Furthermore, this WoB says outright that Hoid does not have Hemalurgy. Conclusion: Hoid seems to use the Lerasium for Feruchemy, but it's likely something more complicated is going on. Important WoB explaining Compounding and the role of metals in Allomancy (And another one) (Another) 1. Allomancy is drawing Investiture into your (damaged) soul. 2. The metals are a filter. For example, burning Tin means drawing Investiture from Preservation or Ruin (in the case of Atium), and Tin turns the Investiture into sensory enhancement. 3. Compounding is drawing Investiture into your soul and turning it into a nonstandard (non-Allomantic) type of power, by changing a metal's "signature" via feruchemically charging it. 4. Feruchemy is a zero-sum internal magic, Allomancy is a net-gain external magic. Compounding is using the net-gain Allomancy, but turning Investiture into Feruchemical powers rather than standard Allomantic powers. 5. The final step of Compounding is (usually) storing the net-gain, superboosted attribute into another metalmind. 6. Standard Feruchemy stores an attribute given by the user into a metalmind. With this final step, Compounding stores an attribute provided by Preservation/Ruin into a metalmind. 7. The Lord Ruler turned Atium into an Atiummind, storing a small amount of youth in it, then used the Atiummind, drawing Investiture from Ruin's body and turning it into youth rather than foresight. A small bead used right can return someone to childhood. He stored the youth that he didn't have to provide into Atiumminds and then had to constantly draw from them in order not to die. When Vin deprived him of his atiumminds, he aged dramatically (1000 years old) and died. Burning atium When Allomancers burn Atium, they are not drawing power from Preservation (or are they...?) but from Ruin's body, i.e. the Atium itself.

The standalone allomantic use of Electrum is potentially helpful, though clearly not as awesome as Atium. I'm interested in the effect of burning Electrum with Duralumin, though. Elend burning Atium and Duralumin let him see Preservation's ultimate plan and Elend's place in it. What kind if radical stuff would burning Electrum let you see? Waching the Netflix Daredevil series and seeing a blind/blindfolded guy walking everywhere like he owns the place and beating up villains reminded me a lot of Spook's coolness. He was really cool in book 3. Also, High Imperial is the best meme. I guess I liked Dockson's characterisation scenes? I would definitely have enjoyed seeing his job in more details.

My guess is that becoming a savant is making holes in your spirit/soul that Investiture can fill. (Snapping is similar, see quotes). Using Allomancy makes holes in your spirit--or rather, maybe uses existing ones (from Snapping) and ever so slowly widens them up. Only burning large amounts of metal can draw on enough Allomantic power (Investiture) to widen the spiritual holes significantly. Once the hole is larger, you can naturally be filled with more power. Ascension is akin to becoming a lerasium savant, apparently... Here are a few related WoB.
-
My theory is that the metals act as a limiter/a key. This is why they need to be destroyed but not with the internal magic Feruchemy. Drawing on Investiture can damage your soul, as it did to Spook who became a savant and Vin a sliver shard holder (inhaling the mists). It's just less likely to happen with the metals placing a limit on how much you can draw by being destroyed in the process of drawing power.

An Elusive Yet Essential Discipline
yurisses replied to Majestic Fox's topic in Writing Excuses and Intentionally Blank
It's a double effect. Some writers' first drafts will indeed, in some respects, turn worse as they gain experience and grow to let the words flow; however, their first drafts will ineluctably improve in other respects, in some cases (I daresay many, as experience accumulates) compensating entirely for the loss of polish, and then some. edit re: Questions I have found that turning off my 'internal editor' and the pressure to write well is, for me, the best way to explore ideas and transform thought into text. Using more intermediary steps makes it less laborious for me to reach the final draft and gives me more time to improve the substance of my prose. -
Hoid Introduced the Metallic Arts to Southern Scadrial
yurisses replied to waxingwass's topic in Mistborn
WoB: http://twg.17thshard.com/index.php?topic=6655.msg129388#msg129388 It seems it's the Lord Ruler who found a way to make the Southern people survive with no genetic modification. It could be related to their technology-based use of the Metallic Arts which BS implies to be used even by people lacking the sDNA to use Metallic Arts as the Northern people would. http://www.theoryland.com/intvmain.php?i=979#13- 7 replies

Here's WoB confirming that Lerasium alloys would create Mistings: http://twg.17thshard.com/index.php?topic=6655.msg129108#msg129108 Also, WoB saying there are nearly 50 allomantic metals: http://www.17thshard.com/forum/topic/1256-the-ten-core-shardworlds/ And WoB slightly contradictory suggesting Lerasium and Atium have more than 16 alloys each(!) http://www.17thshard.com/news/events/interviews/transcriptofourfirstinterview So... 16 base metals + Atium and Lerasium + (potentially more than) 16 Lerasium alloys + (potentially more than) 16 Atium alloys + a potential metal/natural manifestation of Harmony and its potential alloys I lean towards believing Harmony's manifestation (if it exists) will be either an alloy of Lerasium and Atium with no further alloy, or another natural phenomenon like how the mists were Preservation's body. Which would leave for a lot of fun stuff to write with Atium alloys, so I'm guessing the next Mistborn trilogy WILL feature Atium somehow... Perhaps the key to reach Shadesmar lies in an alloy of Atium. Here are WoB regarding the tricks for using Lerasium other than eating it or making alloys: https://twitter.com/BrandSanderson/status/294210314591952896- Lerasium implied to grant access to various magic systems http://www.17thshard.com/news/events/interviews/transcriptofourfirstinterview- (search "lerasium") Lerasium confirmed to have other uses and to strengthen Mistborn if they were to burn it http://www.theoryland.com/intvmain.php?i=1012- (7) Lerasium has feruchemical and hemalurgical uses http://www.17thshard.com/forum/topic/7234-sugarhouse-signing-saturday-mar-29th/page-2#entry120595- Hoid implied to use Lerasium for different purposes than burning it and becoming an Allomancer. In The Letter, Hoid is implied to keep the Lerasium in his body like the Lord Ruler did other metals. My guess is that, through some form of feruchemy, Hoid can rewrite his spiritual DNA and do cool things like grant him powers from any magic system.
