  1. Thanks for the reminder! I've gotten sucked back into school recently, so I kept forgetting to make the drawing happen. But I got it done tonight! And the result is...... (drumroll).......... A Portrait of Adolin Kholin!!! If you want to see the drawing happen, follow this link: https://youtu.be/h0Wh6f4rULw
  2. Thank you! and yes I do have a Tumblr. My handle is gmhansenart Feel free to reblog it =) should be the third image down. And if you'd be so kind, just pop my name and website in there as a credit: Grant M Hansen; gmhansen.com Thanks!
  3. Absolutely! It's a dream of mine to have a bunch of my art cropping up all over the Coppermind, so please, yes, use it! When you attribute it to me, could you just toss my name and website in there? Grant M Hansen, and the website is gmhansen.com (I'm redesigning it currently, but it's getting really close)
  4. brilliant =) I'll hunt down their handles now =)
  5. Thank you all so much for commenting, complimenting, and sharing ideas of what you'd like to see next. I've got 37 votes in hand at this point, and I'm going to print them out, cut them apart and put them into a drawing for what I'll paint next. I'm going to put EVERY vote in, regardless of whether it's a duplicate, so that the subjects that got more votes have a proportionately higher chance of getting drawn. And, of course, I'm going to post the result in here as soon as I have it. I'm considering setting up a web page where I'll document the progress of the project, post up tutorials on how I approach the different parts, talk about concept art and rendering techniques, that sort of thing. Would that be of any interest to you all?
  6. Ummm, I absolutely want to share my stuff with Sanderson =) Do you know of a better way to reach him than the contact page on his website? Tried that once, and (understandably) never heard back. Can't imagine how much email he gets through there. Do you know if he's on the forums?
  7. Funny Story, I actually started out this assignment with the intention of trying Kholinar and its wind blades, but ended up backing off of that idea, just because I didn't have as much information about it as I did about Kharbranth and I wanted to ease into this whole environment concept design thing. But I'll keep my fingers crossed that that's the option that comes out of the hat. I'd love to tackle them giant rocks =)
  8. I haven't done Shadesmar, no. In fact, this is my first serious environment piece from the books, so there's plenty that I haven't done yet =) There are a bunch of votes for Shadesmar between this forum topic and all of my social media, so it's a likely one to come out of the hat. I partially agree that there should be some adjustment made for the ships due to possible high storms. It seems like every dang thing in Roshar would need to be built to compensate for Highstorms, but there IS mention of the fact that ships wouldn't be caught dead outside of a protected bay in one. Or rather, they would be caught and made dead if they were. So that makes me wonder if they wouldn't have had to be too terribly different from the kinds of ships we sail on earth. Good thought, Stormgate!
  9. Venture mistborn, please feel free to use it =)
  10. There's definitely color distinction in the book. And I quote: "Buildings were grouped by color, and that color seemed to indicate purpose. Shops selling the same items would be painted the same shades—violet for clothing, green for foods. Homes had their own pattern, though Shallan couldn’t interpret it. The colors were soft, with a washed-out, subdued tonality.” I tried to throw some differing hues at the buildings, but tried to do so without sacrificing the overall orangey glow of evening light. Can totally see where the "less industrial" comment is coming from. I figured that the buildings closest to the harbor would be dedicated more to industry and commerce, and that residential districts would be higher up the slope. But the buildings higher up are farther away, less visible, and mostly in shadow. So the general effect definitely comes across as more industrial, yeah.
  11. I'm in need of an idea, and I hope that you can help.W What/where do you vote that I should paint next? I'm thinking of gathering the options presented in this topic/the gallery's comments and drawing out of a hat, or making a spin wheel or something like that. Then it's off to the races. I'll keep you's posted. And without further ado--my interpretation of Kharbranth: (click to go to the gallery and click again to zoom, i guess..) Now the story: This painting was DANG FUN to create. I've been out painting landscapes for a class all fall long and practicing up my skills (because my past environment paintings have been suck...) This piece was the final assignment for the class and it evolved over the course of like, a month and a half. I worked really closely with my teacher (one of the artists who worked on Rio, the Ice Age sequels, the Peanuts Movie, etc.) and got some great feedback to make this all possible, so BIG thanks to him. Please note: Sky eels. The earlier iterations had sea gulls, then I realized: Roshar. No birds. huh. Also note: Teravangian's palace and much of the city is obscured by a creepy, foggy sort of shadow. Foreshadowing.. Ba dum Chish! ;-) And lastly: Please, seriously, cast your votes on the next Rosharan location that you'd like to see. Ideally, something that has adequate description in the books. I'd love some community involvement in the next piece, ya know? =) C Cheers!
  12. Piece I painted for my landscape painting final. It's Kharbranth!! I'm going to post a thread in the forums with it, because I need some recommendations from the rest of y'all on a good subject for the next location I go after. Feel free to weigh in with your comments here as well, though!
  13. Very nice!
  14. Started playing around with some ideas on a basic look and feel for the shattered plains today, and I kinda like 'em =) big changes from what I created in my last Kaladin fanart piece. Let me know what you think!
  15. very cool =)
  16. I LOVE that there's so much good discussion cropping up over this. Honestly, I've been subscribing more and more to the flattened plains camp myself over time. I love the potential visual drama that could be created by having Southern Utah-esque rock formations formed over time by all the wind, but as many of you have pointed out: these are the Shattered Plains. My current mental picture of the place would be much, much flatter, but will retain some unevenness and variety from the long-buried buildings of the cities that were buried out there. I think particularly of the scene where Adolin climbs up basically a three-tiered cake of cremmy rock to bash down the Parshendi with the help of Benedict Arnold. I'll be toning down the crazy mountain stuff, for sure. Fun as it was to experiment and learn from this piece, I don't agree with most of my own statements i've made in it =) heh. I love the feedback, you all! Thank you much, and keep it coming! Any and all the inside info I can glean about this world is welcome. Maybe someday I'll get it down well enough that Brandon will have me paint him something... We can dream, right? =)
  17. Thanks! How did I do it? I made a ton of crappy paintings first. heh =)
  18. Here's another piece. We've got Kaladin flying with Syll above the Shattered Plains. Happy to have worked through this one faster than previous works. Kept fiddling and fussing with this thing and eventually had to make myself stop. Lighting is hard business, let me tell you.
