  1. Grant, have you done your lottery yet to determine what your next work will be? I'm still hoping to see the Reshi isles with the Tai-Na!

Thanks for the reminder! I've gotten sucked back into school recently, so I kept forgetting to make the drawing happen.

But I got it done tonight!

    And the result is...... (drumroll)..........

    A Portrait of Adolin Kholin!!!

If you want to see the drawing happen, follow this link:

  2. This might just be my favorite piece of Stormlight fan-art I've ever seen. Thank you for sharing it with us!

Also, as I guy pretty involved with the Coppermind, our wiki, I was wondering if we could make use of this piece of art? It would be attributed to you on there and any page we put it on. If not, no worries. I'm just glad we all got to see it. :)

Absolutely!  It's a dream of mine to have a bunch of my art cropping up all over the Coppermind, so please, yes, use it!  When you attribute it to me, could you just toss my name and website in there? Grant M Hansen, and the website is gmhansen.com   (I'm redesigning it currently, but it's getting really close)

  3. Thank you all so much for commenting, complimenting, and sharing ideas of what you'd like to see next. I've got 37 votes in hand at this point, and I'm going to print them out, cut them apart and put them into a drawing for what I'll paint next.

I'm going to put EVERY vote in, regardless of whether it's a duplicate, so that the subjects that got more votes have a proportionately higher chance of getting drawn. And, of course, I'm going to post the result in here as soon as I have it.

I'm considering setting up a web page where I'll document the progress of the project, post up tutorials on how I approach the different parts, talk about concept art and rendering techniques, that sort of thing.

Would that be of any interest to you all?

  4. so good - please send to Sanderson

I agree with Shadesmar - but would also like to see Reshi Isles

not sure how you feel about doing people / creatures ..but would love to see you do Cusicesh in Kasitor Bay

Ummm, I absolutely want to share my stuff with Sanderson =) Do you know of a better way to reach him than the contact page on his website? Tried that once, and (understandably) never heard back. Can't imagine how much email he gets through there. Do you know if he's on the forums?

  5. I thought the same thing. Kholinars Windblades.

And to change your profile pic, go to your profile and it should say change pic on the 17th shard logo.

First amd foremost: the painting is absolutely breathtaking. Secondly: how about Kolinar with its windblades

Sidenote and this had nothing to do with the thread but seeing as i can't figure it put i thpught id ask: how do i change my profile picture lol

Funny Story, I actually started out this assignment with the intention of trying Kholinar and its wind blades, but ended up backing off of that idea, just because I didn't have as much information about it as I did about Kharbranth and I wanted to ease into this whole environment concept design thing.  But I'll keep my fingers crossed that that's the option that comes out of the hat. I'd love to tackle them giant rocks =)

  6. Have you done Shadesmar yet? Also, the palace on the Shattered Plains would be interesting. I don't know what you have already done, so I am just listing everything I can think of. I don't know if there is enough detail, but what about Hearthstone, Kaladin's home town? Also, the battlefield where *ahem* Amaram won his Shards (avoiding spoilers) would be cool. Well done on Kharbranth, as well! Although, I wonder if boat design would be affected by the regular highstorms. My only problem, and a minor one at that.

I haven't done Shadesmar, no. In fact, this is my first serious environment piece from the books, so there's plenty that I haven't done yet =)  There are a bunch of votes for Shadesmar between this forum topic and all of my social media, so it's a likely one to come out of the hat.

I partially agree that there should be some adjustment made for the ships due to possible high storms. It seems like every dang thing in Roshar would need to be built to compensate for Highstorms, but there IS mention of the fact that ships wouldn't be caught dead outside of a protected bay in one. Or rather, they would be caught and made dead if they were. So that makes me wonder if they wouldn't have had to be too terribly different from the kinds of ships we sail on earth.   Good thought, Stormgate!

  7. I LOVE that there's so much good discussion cropping up over this.

Honestly, I've been subscribing more and more to the flattened plains camp myself over time. I love the potential visual drama that could be created by having Southern Utah-esque rock formations formed over time by all the wind, but as many of you have pointed out: these are the Shattered Plains

My current mental picture of the place would be much, much flatter, but will retain some unevenness and variety from the long-buried buildings of the cities that were buried out there. I think particularly of the scene where Adolin climbs up basically a three-tiered cake of cremmy rock to bash down the Parshendi with the help of Benedict Arnold.

I'll be toning down the crazy mountain stuff, for sure. Fun as it was to experiment and learn from this piece, I don't agree with most of my own statements i've made in it =) heh.

I love the feedback, you all! Thank you much, and keep it coming! Any and all the inside info I can glean about this world is welcome. Maybe someday I'll get it down well enough that Brandon will have me paint him something... We can dream, right? =)

  8. Uh. I don't have an official list really. Plus, even if I could narrow it down, announcing the names on it implicitly insults any artist who is not there, and I don't want to do that.

O goodness, heh. Yeah, I definitely needed to be clearer with my question/intention there. Rather than really wanting an ordered list of who you think is the best, I'm just interested in seeing other great Cosmere art, finding some cool artists to follow, and seeing other takes on stories I adore. So sorry about dropping a tactlessly-phrased request in there. My bad :/

  9. Oh man. This is one of the best (if not THE best) pieces of fan art I have seen. Incredible. Just incredible.

Now I need to see your interpretation of characters from Warbreaker.

Edit: Have you put this in the Gallery?

When you attach files directly to a post here, they get attached as clickable thumbnails if they are above certain size. So the thumbnail is super tiny, but when you click it, it turns full size. It's fine.

As for the portrait, massive improvement! I've always imagined him a little... broader, in both face and body, but this might be purely a personal interpretation. The quality of the art is easily in Top 5 Cosmere artists I've seen. Maybe Top 3.

Wow. You have some serious skills. Never really pictured Dalinar with a full beard, but you have made it look good. The rough Kaladin sketch looks even better.

Thank you all so much!!  Argent, I'd love to know who your top 5 Cosmere artists are. Could you shoot out a list? =)

Kipper: I've definitely got it on my list to make fanart for Brandon's other books someday, including Warbreaker. Dunno what the timeline is on that (there's just SO MUCH to love and draw about the Stormlight Archives for me), but it'll certainly happen someday :) And yes, the Dalinar portrait is in the Gallery.

And Tyson: I've heard that a lot. Interestingly enough, I never imagined him without  a full beard. so funny/cool how there can be so many interpretations all based on the same description. That thur be good writing on Brandon's part.

  10. I wrapped up a Dalinar portrait study recently with the intent of updating this:

    Dalinar Kholin

It's been sitting on my digital easel for a while as I basically procrastinated getting into finishing up the uniform and such, but I eventually decided to just let it be a face study and move on with life. So without further ado, here's my interpretation of Dalinar Kholin, one of my absolute favorite literary characters EVER.

    Dalinar Portrait

I feel good about this one, in that I feel like I'm learning and making progress with each portrait. It's fun/painful to look back and see where I came from, but hopefully I can keep up the growing and someday maybe Brandon will hire me to paint a piece or too ;)  (wink wink, Brandon Sanderson. Wink. Wink.)

Lastly, I wanted to throw in a little preview of the next piece of fanart that I'm starting into. It's just a rough sketch right now (and I mean seriously ROUGH), but it's starting to take the shape I want, and I figure that if I throw 'er in here, I'll be held a bit more accountable to actually get the thing done in a timely manner.

It's a scene that I'm kinda hoping to make into part of a series, and it'll be called Kaladin, Healer - 1. To be followed by future Healer scenes, and then things like: Kaladin, Warrior or Radiant or Betrayed, or whatever. If y'all have good ideas for scenes or themes to mix into the series, I'd love to hear them!

    Here's the rough:

p.s. When I previewed this post, the little rough drawing is SUPER tiny. Anyone know how to up the size of the thing? I couldn't figure it out...
