Had a thought: what about a mass driver system to launch people into space, but instead of using electromagnets and a magnetic capsule you used Coinshots and Lurchers (inside a capsule) to move the capsule along its path. Since the path is basically a long metal tube attached to the ground that eventually arcs towards space, your Allomancers will move long before the path does. Make your capsule out of a low-density, high-strength plastic, and you could accelerate to speeds of roughly twenty thousand miles per hour (10.5 km/s, taken from the article). This would solve a lot of the speed issues, and assuming you get some zinc Compounders working on calculating your flight, you may even be able to get places in a reasonable time frame.
-
That explains the numbers of it, yes, but not the actual alphabet per se, which is what I was shooting for.
-
You would also throw multiple planets and possibly stars out of their stable orbits, possibly killing life on said planets and accelerating the decay of the universe - just like Ruin wanted when he helped make Feruchemy. (Edit: just in case it wasn't clear, I'm once again being over dramatic to prove a point.)
-
Will we ever see something like Navani's Notebook, but written in the Steel Alphabet? Hints to the logic behind those symbols would be nice.
-
What force, magical or otherwise, would cause Aonic patterns (specifically Aon Aon, as it's the basis of everything) to shift like that, assuming this is true? Not the splintering of 'Devotion' and Dominion, since we've confirmed that said splintering happened long before the Reod. I'm not saying NO to this, as it's an interesting idea. But this fundamental shift must have been triggered by something.
-
I stand corrected. I was basing my statements on what happens to deep-sea creatures when they're brought up to sea level for study, and over dramatizing to prove a point. Vacuum exposure would still mess you up, though. Also of note in Kurkistan's link is that vacuum is actually an excellent insulator, which does take care of the warmth issue. Copied for ease of reading:
-
The only problem I see with this idea is the vacuum of space - your body would explode from the sudden lack of pressure on it. It's a basic physics concept that air, just like everything else, has weight. Oversimplification here, but because of that weight it exerts pressure all over our planet at roughly 760 Tor (14.7 psi) and part of our biology is the ability to deal with that constant pressure. Take us into space and all that pressure is gone, our bodies are now pushing on something that's no longer there, and we're just bloody larger-than-human smears drifting across the cosmere. Though I wonder if Compounding gold would prevent that, so it's still plausible.

I see what you did there

I see emotional Allomancy as being more of a supplementary art form, much as scenic, lighting, and costume design are. There would be artists who specialize in emotional manipulation, yes, but they wouldn't perform on their own. That said, a emotional artist (for lack of a better term) would have marketable skills outside entertainment venues in the same way scenic, lighting, and costume technicians do. Examples include political assemblies (sooth/riot your audience at key points), the intelligence community (form relationships faster via subtle emotional manipulation), and any of the other examples shown above.

Speaking as one involved in theatre, I can say with confidence: ^this. So many actors I know would love to have this kind of ability.

Good luck, Silus. I'll hold down the fort. As for the rest of us, status updates: Real life is kicking my butt pretty hard, so things are going slowly. I'm going through all the applications, looking for points where people can be more specific. Overall, though, fantastic job. I'll try to get something up to advance everyone's Story threads by the end of this coming weekend, but no promises. I'd appreciate any thoughts you guys have on making the new Feruchemical abilities fit within Nexus, as well as ideas for 1-point Grid components. That seems to be an issue. I've got a general game plan for where this is all going. Tournament matches are just the start, believe me.

Eerongal “With how many Morphs are here, I’d be surprised if Ghrant weren’t workin’. He’s a Spheresmith, like I said, so you can probably find him over at the smithy.” He pours himself another shot of the brandy as you make your introduction, then answers, “Good to know you, Eerongal. You seem like the decent type. I’d love to tell you my name, but I’ve forgotten it. Haven’t known it for years. Another side effect of the T’Loakian, long-term memory goes down the drain. Thankfully skills and short-term stay, or I’d be out of a job. Most folks, even Ghrant, just call me Barkeep or Keep. I’ll let you know if anyone comes lookin’.” Keep shakes your hand as he introduces himself, then addresses another Spheremorph who just approached the bar. “What’ll it be, Morph?” River Peter is still weeping on his knees as you walk away. As you enter the bar, you make note of the few Spheremorphs around, and see Eerongal talking to the bartender. You hear the last of the bartender’s words to Eero as you arrive at the bar. “…call me Barkeep or Keep. I’ll let you know if anyone comes lookin’.” Keep releases Eerongal’s hand and turns to you. “What’ll it be, Morph?”

Got one for a Double Bronze - Hunter. Never needs to sleep, due to Compounding, and can find anyone using (theoretically) any magic system.

Coo-air, baby sound and the substance we breathe. If you see this basically anywhere, it's me.

Does the Spiritual Realm have a name, like Shadesmar is the Cognitive Realm? Will we ever get to see the Spiritual Realm?

After stewing over this information for a bit, I've got a mini-theory: the various magics of Sel are all combinations of both Devotion/syn and Dominion, just in different proportions. This is mostly based on the definition of the words. Devotion: Ardent, often selfless affection and dedication, as to a person or principle; Religious ardor or zeal Dominion: A territory or sphere of influence or control; Control or the exercise of control The first definition of both these words seems to fit Elantrians as we know them, while the second seems to fit the Dakhor monks. Because I like breaking things down... AonDor - more Devotion than Dominion Devotion component: to a cause. Karata had her child, Galladon had his orchards, Taan had stonework, etc. This varies a lot. Dominion component: local landscape. the Aonic landscape, where Elantris was established. ChayShan - equal parts Devotion and Dominion Devotion component: movement skills. the ChayShan dance Shuden does takes a lot of practice, which he would have to devote a lot of time to in order to master. Dominion component: your own body. The more in tune with his body he was, the more Shuden seemed to glow. This one is the fuzziest of them, simply because we only see it twice. Dakhor system - more Dominion than Devotion Devotion component: faith. Dakhor monks are among the most zealous followers of Shu-Dereth, and it's possible they are chosen to become Dakhor for that very reason. Dominion component: over others. Gaining Dakhor powers requires sacrifice, and the more power you gain the more lives it takes. Both components are important to the magics, unlike the mutual exclusivity of Preservation and Ruin. This, I believe, is because the Shards are not perfect opposites. Instead, the two Shards' Intents compliment each other - the important thing is how they work together. AonDor would be a Devotion-lead, Dominion-follow system; Dakhor would be the opposite, with Dominion leading, and ChayShan would be a system where neither leads. Hope that makes sense.

I'm sure ear protection exists, and Tineye gunmen would use it liberally. But a Double Tin Twinborn would be an awesome sniper, no doubt.

^^ This is exactly what I was thinking.

This is correct, however the skill to use an item is separate from the item itself, as seen here, in the Jay'el section. It would seem to work better with a single ability. When creating a new character, I'll rule that if you spend the 3 points to get a Complex Evolved Form, you can have the Form Fragment to put in it. If you wanted one during the course of the game, we'd have to work that out, but it's possible. Either or. People have been making Forms as we go and not used them immediately - Leech, Cartoonist, Scribbler, Sailor, Buccaneer, and Dread Pirate all come to mind. Just know that anything you make, we can and probably will usurp to use against you. (mwahahaha!)

Another notable factoid: Tan stole Donal's shipment of bendalloy. That's what sparked the other two, who Wax and Lessie shot, to be there. So, another possibility is that Tan was either a Slider or spiked himself to gain that power. That would let him pop up the bubble, move Lessie, and drop the bubble so that the bullet hit her just right. The time between bubble down and bubble up would be when Wax shot Tan. Another thing to note is that Lessie's death pushed Wax psychologically, and probably drove him away from the Roughs, back to the city. So maybe Harmony works mysterious ways, and set up the entire chain of events that put Wax in the right place at the right time to stop Miles and the Set.

Probably more relatible to a broad audience, and yes.

Sylent, Frost, Obi, and Typhoon - I'm waiting on a chat with Silus about the approval process, but I like what I'm seeing. Welcome, ulysses! Frost beat me to it, but you do ask good questions. Let's try and answer them, huh? Hunger carries from Baseline to all Forms, and accumulates while in Forms. Yes, you can eat while in a Form and become less hungry overall. Non-fatal injuries may not carry directly, but serious injuries, say on the level of broken bones, would carry but be diminished. Example: Jay'el gets his arm broken in a fight with River while in his Gunner Form. He switches to Shaman and his arm is no longer broken, but it is stiff and hard to move. Reverting to Baseline removes most non-fatal wounds, but fatal wounds do still have some after-effect. See Peter's recent interaction with River for an example. Magical ailments and enhancements are usually time-based, meaning they diminish over time. Switching Forms decreases the duration of any enhancement by (and I'm making up numbers here) roughly 20% of the original duration, and increases the duration of ailments by a similar percentage. Example: Thomas McGee, in his Warrior-based Fire Form, gets a temporary buff because Jay'el stupidly cast Fire on him. The buff lasts two minutes, 120 seconds (Or, if you prefer, about 10 posts in that fight). Jay'el then used Blinding Shot on Thomas, blinding him for two minutes. Thomas rapidly switched Forms, losing 24 seconds (two posts) on his buff and gaining 24 seconds of blindness with each switch. Because he had no Forms with any sort of blind-sight (read: Allomantic iron/steel, similar), he reverted to Baseline. Switching back to Baseline immediately reduces any ailments duration to 20% of the original duration or whatever time is left, whichever is shorter. Reverting to Baseline also wipes any magical enhancements. Stamina is enhanced while in Forms, but your overall stamina depends on your Form and how physically fit you are normally. If you ran until exhausted in a Form with low stamina, let's say Cartoonist, and then switched to a Pewterarm Form, your overall stamina is increased by the nature of the Form (even without burning pewter) so you could continue running. However, if you did the opposite, switched to Cartoonist after running to exhaustion as a Pewterarm, you'd likely collapse, especially if you'd been pewter-dragging. You basically hit this one on the head, expect with the bullet bit. Those fade from external objects (walls, people) after about 10 minutes. Yes, this does let some Spheremorphs get away with murder. Generally those are frowned upon, though. Objects critical to Forms (Chemist metalminds, Cartoonist sketchpads, Gunner pistols, etc) disappear immediately if the Spheremorph switches Forms without having the critical object on his/her person, as you would expect. Currently in the works. We have to adapt the new powers to work in Nexus. Yes, but it's effects are diminished. For those that haven't read Alloy, spoiler tag: They would need to be a Fused Form. Reasoning: Sphere evolution isn't just about enhancing or increasing your power, it's about refining it. Black Mages, who can cast any harmful elemental spell, don't become Arcane Masters, who can cast any harmful elemental spell at a very increased level - Black Mages evolve into things like Fire Mage, who forgo the use of other elements to focus and increase their ability with fire. It would be distinctly odd for a Black Mage to keep all of their ability with harmful elements and gain all the healing skills of a White Mage without losing anything. Yes, Misting -> Mistborn and Chemist -> Keeper break this, but they also dead-end the Sphere evolution path; Twinborn Spheres don't, necessarily. Magical nourishment from bendalloy (Subsumer) would be a type of enhancement, and its effect would end as soon as you left the Form. You'd leave the Form just as hungry as you went in, assuming you only tapped while in the Form. Yes, though being Spheremorphs instead of true kandra this isn't commonly done. Remember that wounds still hurt a kandra, and though their flesh is mutable it is a finite resource - closing a gaping wound requires flesh from other areas of the body. You could, yes. However, because of the way shifting works, the bendalloy/cadmium bubble drops midway through the shift. For a split second, nothing noticable in real-time, Spheremorphs revert to Baseline between shifts. This is part of what lets them heal when switching, but it also means that even with Womb of Mist you aren't always a Slider (which is a requirement for having the speed bubble up constantly). Everything else here is subject to change if Silus wants it to. But since I made the Leech Form, I'm overruling him on this one: Yes, they can still store their own attributes. They could even give up their own attributes to others, if they wished. Neither of these practices is common, however. Leech will also be updated when Chemist abilities are adapted to Nexus. Edit: fixed the wall-o-text effect

I was wondering about this too. My personal theory is that it would give your stored memories a kind of super-clarity. From Well we know that visual memories don't store as well as verbal, which is why Sazed talked to himself while storing up memories of the Convetical of Seran (spelling issues). BUT, we don't have any information about memories gained in other ways, like sensation or emotion. Let's assume they don't store well, however. So, with the super-clarity of Compounded copper, perhaps Double Copper Twinborns gain a kind of holographic memory, where they can actually access their old memories and walk around in them, using all the information that was barely stored earlier. It acts like Allomantic tin, but only for the memories they've stored. If anyone's seen Kyle XY, that was basically what I was thinking. If not, I may not have explained this very well.
-
Don't have my copy of TFE with me for reference, but I think when Vin tried to burn one of Sazed's metalminds, she Allomantically sensed another reserve of power that she couldn't touch, though she could burn the metalmind just fine. So, mini-theory here: For a Compounder, their metal gives them two Allomantic reserves, one with the metal's normal Allomantic effect and another that burns the Feruchemical storage, releasing and amplifying it so they can store it in other metalminds. So a Mistborn Keeper (TLR) would really have access to 32 Allomantic reserves, two per metal (38 including lerasium, atium, and malatium).

Whoopsy, made a topic over in Gen Theories jsut before this got made. Copy and pasted: I put in my pre-order as soon as I heard {about it}, with the request that Brandon write a clue to the nature of the cosmere, specifically Realmatic theory. What I got Monday night was interesting to say the least. I'll post a picture of it later, but here it is: My thoughts: The word 'entities' is very specific. Does this mean people (humans) aren't shadowed on the Cognitive and Spiritual Realms? Also telling is the word-choice of 'on' instead of 'in.' Not sure what this means yet, but Brandon is usually tricky with his wording. The entities we've seen are on Shadesmar primarily and are shadowed on the Physical, but there is no mention of the Spiritual Realm. Does this mean that Cognitive entities don't have a Spiritual component? The entities we've seen, what are they? My first reaction was spren, but, the more I considered it, Seons also became a possibility. No particular logic behind that yet, just a second reaction. So. Let's chew on this bone, shall we?
