Vulnerabilities are openings for viruses and other malware. I'd much rather have a computer with fewer vulnerabilities.

I just feel like, as an adult, I can still enjoy and relate to a "young adult" book, because it's something I went through and an age I once was. Similarly, as a teenager I had no problem enjoying and understanding adult level books either. I just have trouble understanding why a book would be "targeted" towards one specific age group, when people of any age can enjoy it.

Definitely Cody. I've never seen such an odd character as a Southern Scotsman. I always imagine him speaking in a Scottish accent, then have to remind myself that it would sound like a Southern drawl instead.

After just having finished rereading Firefight, I noticed that Regalia says that they actually did look at Calamity through a telescope quite often in the beginning, but that it's very difficult to make out what they're seeing because he (and yes, she said "he" and called him an Epic) glowed so brightly. So that, coupled with the previous theory that he might be outside the atmosphere and therefore unreachable by drones, would give people a pretty hard time studying him. I still want to know where he came from. Obviously that will be explained in Calamity, but I'm still wracking my brain trying to think of what it could be.

Who is your LEAST favorite character in the Cosmere?
Sand Master replied to Patar's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Have you read WoR? The reason she reacted so fiercely to Adolin is because he said he'd protect her, which is exactly what her father did to her. He completely sheltered her from anything and everything, and she became simply something to sit there and look pretty. She wasn't a person, she was a display. That's what she felt was happening again when Adolin said he'd protect her, and that's why she reacted in such a negative way. Additionally, a lot of people have said that they dislike Kaladin and the Shallan/Kaladin pairing (Shalladin?) simply because it's an "overused trope" or something similar to that. I understand that to an extent, but I feel like it's a result of our culture that people feel like this, and at the very least I'd like to put my two cents in. What I mean when I say it's a result of our culture is that people have started to immediately revile anything that's not completely new and original. While I understand that repetition and lack of change can make things stale and boring, I don't think that the two necessarily go hand in hand. Yes, Kaladin's character has been done before, and yes, he and Shallan becoming a couple seems a bit stereotypical, but honestly? I love every bit of it. Just because it's been done before doesn't mean it can't be done again and still be engaging and intriguing. The end result isn't what's important, it's the path they take to get there. Journey before destination. And I've never seen a journey (in the details, not the larger concept) quite like Kaladin's. But I'm done ranting, I just wanted to hopefully bring up the possibility to some people that simply because it's already been done, they don't have to hate it. Alright, back to the real topic of this forum: My least favorite character in the cosmere? Probably Adolin. He doesn't seem to care much about anything but dueling and keeping his House (and by extension, the kingdom) afloat. Granted, that second one is a pretty big plus, but his character still kind of falls flat to me. He's not driven by an overwhelming need to save it, like Dalinar is, and he doesn't have the same motivation for it that Dalinar does either. He's not particularly funny, smart, passionate, or serious for the most part. He just is. I don't mind the fact that he duels, and I don't mind that he is trying to help his father. I liked the character development that took place when he realized he should be trusting Dalinar, but I want to know more about him as a person. What his interests are, and what he likes to do. His childhood, things like that. Even Renarin has more than him in that aspect. I don't dislike Adolin as a person, I just feel like his character falls flat, and that's why he's my least favorite. Sorry for the long post. -
Shardhammers aren't the same as Shardblades but in hammer form. The reason they're called Shardhammers is because they're much heavier and bigger than normal hammers, as they're specifically made for people in Shardplate. They're still normal metal though, nothing magical.

I don't know that I agree with that. There's been plenty of books labeled "teen" or "young adult" that I've read that had "f*ck" in it. Additionally, and sort of as a side note, I really dislike the idea that books have to be targeted towards a certain age range of readers. What makes this a teen book? The main character's age? Kaladin was 19 when Stormlight Archive started, which is practically the same age. How old was Siri, in Warbreaker? 16? Neither of those books are considered young adult. So is it lack of explicitly adult content? If so, that's kind of ridiculous. It implies that only teens and young adults can be the "target audience" of literature that doesn't contain explicit content, which is just flat-out wrong. Does including explicit material in a book make it better somehow, and therefore only suitable for more experienced and mature readers? Not in the least. Sorry, I don't mean to go on a rant but this sort of thing always bugs me.

Um.... I feel like I've just walked in on a multi-variable calculus class when I was only just introduced to basic algebra. Anyone mind if I ask how the HELL everyone is reading this?

I'm personally hoping to see a lot of Kaladin's old worries and unsolved problems get solved. Kaladin is far and away my favorite character (except maybe Axies) and I would love to see as much POV time with him as possible. I realize this probably isn't going to happen the way it did in WoK, this being Dalinar's book, but here's what I really hope to see: Kaladin meets up with Laral, she sees that he's a KR and a Lighteyes now, and (hating her life with Roshone) tries to restart their romantic relationship. Kaladin, remembering how she treated him, basically says she's not worth his time anymore (especially since he's got his sights set on Shallan now) and leaves her to deal with the consequences of her actions. Kaladin meets with Roshone, still terrorizing his family, unless one or both of his parents are dead or broken. Kaladin then tells Roshone to f**k off or face a KR. Eventually returning to Urithiru, Kaladin/Shallan start to build a relationship, and Adolin -- realizing that though he likes Shallan, they aren't really a good match -- steps aside and even encourages it. Knowing Sanderson though, things are going to get worse and worse, only getting better at the very end. Even then, "getting better" might include almost every main character dying (see: Hero of Ages). This is what I would love to see though, in an ideal Roshar.

Vivenna seems like a possibility, though I felt that she and Vasher/Zahel probably had something going on, which would kind of exclude Dalinar. While I'm not ruling out Vivenna as an option, I think we should at least consider other people. Personally, I think it will be that she's not dead (if she wasn't going to be important, I think we would have heard her name from the POV of someone other than Dalinar), but also that she's someone we haven't yet seen or heard of.

I wonder if Shardmetal is Allomantically inert, like Aluminum. If so, then maybe we could get a Shardcap, to protect from those sneaky Soothers/Rioters.

Interesting, most everyone seems to be getting relatively high percentages in at least one order, if not more. By contrast, here's mine: 28% Bondsmith 25% Skybreaker 19% Truthwatcher 16% Willshaper 13% Edgedancer 8% Elsecaller 8% Windrunner 0% Lightweaver 0% Dustbringer Seems I wouldn't make a very good Radiant.

It's like Fallout Boy used this book as inspiration for an entire album.

What I would like to know is the origin of Calamity. IIRC, someone, at some point, mentioned that people thought it was an experiment by government scientists gone wrong? There were other proposed theories as well, but this one stuck with me. It fits with Prof being a science teacher (even if it was only for fifth graders) and Tia working for NASA. I think they both know more about what Calamity is and where it/he/she came from than they're letting on. Aside from where Calamity came from, David speculates that perhaps what Calamity is is an Epic, the first Epic, who just gifted random powers to the people that he wanted to turn into Epics. This seems to make the most sense to me. An existing religious figure, as Regalia seems to view Calamity, doesn't seem to be Sanderson's style and wouldn't be very appealing to me as a reader. And some kind of unknown god doesn't seem to fit either. An all-powerful Epic seems to be the most likely to me. Unless.... Guys..... What if Calamity is.... SUPERMAN!?

I'll agree with this as soon as Cody says, "Smokin' Jesus titty cinnamon!" -
Interesting that Immortals by Fallout Boy was mentioned. For some time now I've thought (and just earlier today made a post) that a perfect theme song for the whole Steelheart book would be My Songs Know What You Did In the Dark, also by Fallout Boy.

To those arguing that the new words are acceptable, I think you're missing the point. I don't think anyone is (or at least, I don't think most people are) saying that the new words are too odd to believe. I think that the weird part is that they've replaced all the old swear words. New language does pop up all the time, but that doesn't mean we suddenly forget all the words we used to use. The fact that slontze and sparks are pretty much the only swears in the whole series. However, to be fair, I just looked it up and they say "hell" fairly regularly (in Firefight, at least; I didn't check Steelheart). So maybe they did keep some of the old swears, and we just notice the new ones so much that it seems the old are gone.

That's fine, but I didn't mean to make it sound like yours wasn't enough as it was. A fan-made song is just as good, it's just that so far there's ONLY been fan-made songs suggested, and I just wanted to clarify that that wasn't a requirement.
-
I love all these fan-made songs. Not what I was expecting at all but really cool. Just so no one is confused though, it's okay to suggest any song, not just one you made.
-
That's pretty good, some funny stuff in there.

If Steelheart were to be a movie, what song would you think would best represent it? I guess it doesn't have to be a movie but I feel like it fits better with the song idea. Anyway, I think this is a great song to represent Steelheart: Let me know what you think, and don't forget to post your own

You might want to check out this link: http://www.gfi.com/blog/most-vulnerable-operating-systems-and-applications-in-2014/ I sort of skipped right to the last page on this forum since everything on the first page was pretty much a bunch of people giving the same reasons over and over again, and I didn't want to go through three pages more of that. Therefore, I don't know if anyone else has brought up the virus/malware argument somewhere in there, but it wouldn't surprise me if they had. Part of the reason I came to this forum was to disillusion anyone of this idea, as for some time now Mac Operating Systems have been getting more malware than Windows, not less. The reason the misconception is still around that Macs don't get as many (or any at all, some people believe) is because for a long time Macs had a very small user base, and so when people were faced with the decision on which OS to make a virus for, they generally chose the one with the potential to affect the most people. Since so many people have started switching over to Macs, more and more viruses are being written for them. This is especially bad for Macs, since (due to their history of not being attacked as often as Windows) they don't have as much of an ability to fend of malware attacks as Windows computers do.
