  1. I assumed it was like some kind of phosphorescent slime mold or something
  2. I've been craving some Zelda, specifically wind waker, Ocarina, and majoras mask, but I dont have any Nintendo console (well I have an old NES, If I could only get it to work). I want to get a Wii U, then get Ocarina and Majoras on the virtual console, plus both Wii games and the wind waker HD rerelease, and then disappear from the world for a few weeks, but until I get around to that I picked up both of the DS Zelda games (Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks), and have been playing those. Beat phantom hourglass last night and started up spirit tracks today. the stylus control is really weird, and a large part of why I hadn't picked them up before, but they are pretty fun.
  3. I keep hoping that Ambrose becomes King at some point and that Kvothe kills him.
  4. Yea, Matt's quarterstaff proficiency isn't exactly out of character, but this is really the first time they call attention to it (also, that is one of my favorite scenes in the series, and there is a specific callback to it in one of the later books that I enjoyed). Rand is going to get better, and then a lot worse. He is probably my least favorite of the main characters for most of the books. Perrin is also a favorite of mine, Matt edges him out, especially later on, but I mostly like him.
  5. that could be. Doing some renovation on the room that held my bookshelves, so all my books are boxed up and difficult to get to rigth now. hard to double check myself. Bendalloy falls in with pewter as a very fast burning metal, so it makes sense that wayne would want to consume it in larger quantities, since he runs through it quicker than say wax with steel.
  6. I think Marasi uses Cadmium powder in Alloy of Law.
  7. Pretty sure Matt is just about everyone's favorite character.
  8. Ignoring the debate above me for the time being, I have to wonder how often someone would need that much reserve of a given metal. Something like pewter, which burns pretty fast would make sense, but unless you are trying to turn yourself into a savant, it doesn't seem like the comparatively massive reserve that ought to accompany something like a pill would really be necessary for most folks.
  9. Ah, ok, that meshes with what I remember from the books and the WoB. I thought you meant that he couldn't even effect what was going into/coming out of the coppermind, which would have contradicted Kwaan
  10. unless of course you are stealing their gold feruchemy ability, anyway
  11. I'm just curious why not? Kwaan states pretty specifically in his inscription that what he remembers of the prophecies and the information within his copperminds are not the same. Are you assuming that he is just mistaken about this? or somethign else is going on?
  12. I always just assumed that Ruin preferred to fatally spike people because he's Ruin, it's what he does.
  13. Pawn of prophecy first. The events of that series (The Belgariad) precede the events of Guardians of the West's series (the Malloreon)
  14. The problem for me is that on my reread, I wouldn't have ranked most of the first 4 books above a 3/5, so if the others are generally worse, then it's unlikely I'll enjoy them much.
  15. Thanks for the write-up, I'm in the same boat as Vash on this one, I read the first few (and a couple after), so It's nice to know that I shouldn't waste my time on the rest
  16. See for me, Adams just has a way of phrasing things that I find wonderful. for example, theres a line early on i the first book describing the Vogon Constructor fleet that reads "They hung in the air in much the way bricks don't." Its such a ridiculous line, but it works for me. If the humor doesnt work for you, then I can see how you wouldn't enjoy the rest of of the books. On Dune, I liked Messiah and Children, but some of the elements they introduce, like Ghola and the whole ancestor possession thing, could easily be abused. In fact, if wikipedia is to be believed, they very much are abused in later books, which leads to a comic-book style thing where no one ever dies permanently.
  17. Yea, this. On the other hand, that could just be the assumption I built up in my mind to explain why the gates weren't working. I don't have access to my copy of the book right nnow, so I can't go back and look it up
  18. I forget if it was mentioned in the books or not, but I got the impression that there was some sort of failsafe in place to prevent an oathgate from being opened to another that was currently occupied. so the palace, which would be perpetually occupied, would make it impossible to go to kholinar. I feel like this is mentioned towards the end of WoR, but I could also be completely imagining it
  19. I just can't fathom either of these. I read a few of the foundation books, and I thought they were boring. Something about Asimov's style just doesn't work for me. HHG2G, on the other hand was a lot of fun, though with diminishing returns on the later books I'm with you on the Dune books. the first 3 were great, but I can't bring myself to try any of the later ones. reading the plot synopses on wikipedia, just further cemented that
  20. I've read Slow Regard. I loved it, but you really do have to like Auri a lot for it to work. Sanderfuss, I have definitely said this before regarding WoT, and maybe to you specifically, but I recommend giving book 3 a try, it is one of my favorites in the series. As for Warbreaker vs Elantris: I think Elantris is the worst of the Cosmere books (I still enjoy it, but the rest are better), so make of that what you will
  21. Gah, that would be terrible. That said, with a little special effects magic, he might make a decent Ham. spouting off philosophical bull at people who don't want to hear it...
  22. there is definitely something appealing about literally destroying bad memories in a blazing inferno
  23. we can spike someone who writes much worse, but quickly. maybe like clive cussler or tom clancy or one of those other bestseller writers that generate like 3 books a year. granted I'm sure some of them use ghostwriters, but surely we can find one that produces a significant quantity of their own material. and since we only want writing speed, the quality doesn't matter, except that we won't miss them if they are gone.
  24. Haven't played it, but that does seem like it would fit right in, though you do still have to deal with the difficulty of actually harvesting the chasmfiend
  25. Yea, Wax's steel bubble thing would help, but if memory serves, he mentions in the book that it is a difficult trick, and most people can't/don't know how to do it. Good point, that should have occurred to me; but that still leaves you with something like .01 seconds for every 10 feet away the shooter is (i.e. .03 for 30 feet, .1 for 100 ft, etc. this is an approximation, again based on the numbers I found for a colt .45, some guns will likely be faster) and you are right about my nitpicking, but saying the bullet "has x N of force" just sounds really really weird to me.
