  1. Aw, no. You should cosplay your favorite characters. It's a nerd human right! The real question is: Why wouldn't you want it to be?
  2. Put the Saturn back in Saturnalia! (Yes, I'm a pagan.) Storm the bodyshamers. Make your costume and wear it with pride.
  3. Well, if you really want to get technical about it, the origins of Halloween are in Samhain. (Pronounced "SOW - wen") It's supposedly the time of year when the veil between the spirit world and ours are at their thinnest. But instead of this being a scary thing, tradition holds that it was a time to set out offerings for your ancestors and passed-on loved ones who are likely to come home for a visit when the going is easy. It wasn't until the later Christianization of the Celtic pagan holidays happened that the scary stuff came into play. Modern pagans focus on the ancestor veneration, via offerings, divinations, or meditations.
  4. YES Halloween is about looking awesome. If horrifying is your awesome, then that's great. For me, I'll probably just wear my WorldCon Masquerade costume on Halloween.
  5. That sucks, and I am sorry. My sister went through something similar. Pain, weird brainfogs, various other symptoms. Doctors went through multiple theories: CFIDS, MS, Parkinson's, Fibromyalgia...they were all tested and discarded. Finally, just in the last year, she has an official diagnosis of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. RUSTING FINALLY.
  6. I like our local forecaster. He's a total weather nerd, and likes to focus on explaining what's going on and why things are likely to happen, as well as what can happen to change things. FYI: Snow is the hardest thing for meteorologists to forecast, because tiny changes in the atmosphere can lead to major changes on the ground.
  7. Well, the way Twi used it is the technically correct origin and definition of the word. Generally when I see it used, that would be my first assumption as to what's being talked about, and I rather dislike when it's used in other situations. I think it dilutes the actual offensiveness of the situation it was created for. And yes, this stuff happens all the time. Not just in the U.S., though it can certainly vary per country/region.
  8. Really, you just can't take it at all seriously. Focus on the pretty men and the angsting and the humor. That's really all you need. In other news, I am officially going to get my hair cut after WorldCon is over. I have enough of the stuff that I'm planning to do a hair donation to a reputable charity.
  9. I've been there, once. It was a school trip in, like, elementary school or junior high or something. Oh, you poor, poor innocent thing. You expected Supernatural to actually do any research at all beyond "find stuff that sounds authentic and twist it around to fit what we want to do"? Supernatural NEVER does the research. Ever. It's pop culture Christianity and whatever sounds good for everything else. They've butchered every pagan pantheon and mythology they've touched. Don't get me started about the "Samhain" episode. They couldn't even pronounce it right (it's pronounced "SOW-wen"), let alone use anything remotely resembling the real origins of the holiday. ...and yet I still watch. Because Dean Winchester is pretty. If you'd like the pagan/ecumenical perspective, you can add me to that PM thread.
  10. Heh. I've been there a few times. Trek Fest FTW!
  11. And this year the Olympic committee has banned full-body suits for male swimmers. We should all take a moment to thank them.
  12. Heck, there are people in the world who have nieces and nephews who are OLDER than they are. It's uncommon, but it happens.
  13. Heh. So if it's really an aesthetic thing, and we're already up to page 113...then the reason this one hasn't been closed yet must be that y'all have run out of Star Wars titles.
  14. Ahh, like in The Walking Dead, a universe where the CDC is apparently populated by a bunch of idiots who have no idea how to grow a cell culture in order to determine whether the Walker disease is a virus or bacteria or fungus...
  15. Heh, I'm 5'6" and often find myself wishing I had a few more inches of height. My husband is 6'2" and has a habit of putting things on the top of the refrigerator where I can't reach them. Dear sweet baby Heru. We have a hot Italian guy on the forum. That coat looks like it was born for a 10th Doctor cosplay. Lies. Your original userpic was you. There is a face underneath that beard. Somewhere.
  16. Adding my voice to the rest: you are who you are. Telling them didn't change anything, it just made them aware of who you are. If they can't take that gracefully, then it reflects on them, not you. And in the end, the only folks who should have any real stake in your sexuality are whatever partner(s) you wind up having relationships with.
  17. Oooh, the MitD? (Monster in the Darkness) He's the best.
  18. Solution: catch more Dratini and have two Dragonairs.
  19. Don't use fancy words? Have you met me? Oh, well, no...you probably haven't. Still. All my friends would laugh at this.
  20. As the story goes on, the strip progresses from a pile of one-off jokes to creating its own little set of in-jokes and trope-mangling.
  21. Noooooo! Another one is stolen away! *anklecling*
  22. IIRC, they were really nervous about the tech because of its origins. There was an undertone of worry that they might inadvertently create a Replicator Skynet. Heh, Crichton. He loved his scientific research. He'd research and research until he found something that conflicted with what he wanted to write, and then he'd chuck everything from that point on into the bin and go with his idea. He was a Jedi Master of making pseudoscience sound like real science.
  23. I agree. So are bats. I see them wheeling around outside sometimes at dusk, and cannot resist the urge to shout them encouragement in devouring the mosquito scourge.
  24. I...thought so? I swear I remember someone saying that somewhere around here, that letting threads get too long could potentially cause problems. I always thought it was a bit weird (I know of another forum with threads in the 1,000+ pages), but what the heck do I know about forum design?
