  1. Oof. Yeah, I cut my strips using a yardstick, a second ruler (cause they needed to be more than 3 feet long), and a rotary cutter. Gave me one smooth cut the entire line down, no notches or bobbles where a pair of scissors would have to be moved. Finished the sewing last night. Tonight shall be ironing and starching. It's not the sewing part that's annoying so much as the pinning. So much pinning. Every. Single. Strip. Must. Be. Pinned.
  2. Have you seen my cosplay thread in Creator's Corner? When it comes to costume creation, I am completely out of my dang mind.
  3. My friends are going nuts over this trailer (and I heartily agree, it looks awesome.) And we've taken to calling this movie "Asgardians of the Galaxy".
  4. Yes, that's exactly what I've done. I used a mantled robe pattern as the base for my cloak, so I've got a layer of strips on the robe layer, and another one on the mantled cape layer. Of course, I used knit fabric for the strips so I wouldn't have to worry about zillions of hems, so a lot of it is curling liek woah. I will be starching them tonight. One. Strip. At a. Time.
  5. It's going to be an exciting spring, that's for sure. Mistcloak is coming along. I think I may have gone overboard with the tassels. I have never seen anyone with a mistcloak that has as many tassels as this one does. They tangle so easily this is not at all a practical mode of fashion.
  6. One-month followup appointment for Lasik is tomorrow morning. Dryness has really improved over the last few weeks; I'm barely using the drops at all anymore. Still having trouble breaking the habit of reaching for glasses when I wake up, though. After that, it will be t-minus 1 week till JordanCon! And t-minus 2 weeks till Hawaii! (Yes, I'm going to deal with con drop by immediately jetting away on an exotic tropical vacation. Ya do what ya gotta.)
  7. I am sewing a mistcloak right now.

Can't wait to see it...I have a mistcloak design already set, all I need are supplies and time lol

  8. No, no. See the response above that I posted mere milliseconds before yours. I am truly a moron.
  9. Oh, you haven't heard the worst of it. The previous night, I had been using that same knife. And it slipped. And sorta stabbed that same finger, though the wound wasn't bad. But still. I had an object lesson in not being stupid with dull knives, and completely failed to learn it.
  10. Spent yesterday evening in the ER because I'm a storming idiot and was trying to cut acorn squash all fancy with a too-dull kitchen knife. The flesh of my left index finder is much, much softer than acorn squash. After about an hour and a half of pressure, the bleeding had finally (mostly) stopped. I managed to just barely avoid stitches; they glued me back together, added a pressure bandage, slapped a band-aid over the whole thing to catch any leaks, and sent me on my way. It's sort. Ow. I'm a moron.
  11. I imagine I'll get to it eventually, but it's probably going to be a few years. I have a lot of stuff that's higher on my priority list right now.
  12. @TwiLyghtSansSparkles, I found your soul-twin!
  13. There's a heavy correlation here between music knowledge and general nerdery. The sorts of Americans who are likely to hang out on a forum like this tend to be creative types, so you're going to see a much heavier representation of musicians and artists than you'll see in the general population.
  14. But...it's so daunting. And there's the mid-series slog (I have heard this described as "where the characters suddenly realize they're in a computer RPG and they have 80 sidequests open and have to close them all out to max their XP before the end boss fight"). And I already have so much on my reading plate. Plus it's kind of hilarious to see the shock on people's faces at the con when they find out I haven't read it. I am entertained by strange things. Awesome! We should meet up. And do geekery or some such.
  15. It's a literary-based sci-fi/fantasy convention named after Robert Jordan. As you can guess, it's very Wheel of Time heavy, but they have a very strong Sanderfan presence (and an entire track for Brandon's books). I haven't read a word of WoT and never run out of things to interest me. It's in Atlanta, GA, April 21-23 this year. Brandon himself isn't going to be there this year, but he tries to go as often as he can (and there is always a Team Sanderson presence there).
  16. JordanCon is in three weeks! ...I wish you guys were coming. Bah.
  17. I know I'm a long drive away, but if you do need to evacuate for a hurricane, you are welcome to stay with us.
  18. I've no doubt I'll slip in and out of the writer's track. I should be easy to spot, though. Mistcloak one day, Zelda: Warrior Princess another, and Victorian Twilight Sparkle on the third.
  19. I regret that I have but one upvote to give for this comment.
  20. Lo, I have been summoned. I'm not entirely sure that it's appropriate for me to make any sort of official judgments here. I'll leave that for the Admins. So, setting aside my Moderator hat for a moment... It is OK to have personal opinions about an author's works. It is OK to wish that they would cater more to your tastes. It is of somewhat questionable taste to post a long, drawn-out diatribe on that author's supposed failings on his official fansite. I'm not going to bother dissecting the merits of the arguments as I see little point. But I find the fact that this letter was actually sent to Brandon to be staggeringly, mind-bogglingly rude. Seriously. This man spends hundreds upon hundreds of hours pouring time, energy, and care into everything he writes. Writing is work. To actually submit to him a treatise that tears his work into little pieces, showcasing every alleged flaw for your own self-aggrandizement is just beyond the pale. The things you laid out, if actually implemented, would completely change the tone and timbre of his works. If these elements are really that important to you, go write your own stories. (Learn just how much work it is!) You are not entitled to tailor other people's work to suit your own preferences. The closest anyone gets to come to that is writing fanfic.
  21. The WBC are not representative of any part of humanity that deserves representation. They're actually local to me. The group as a whole is dying. Their kids keep waking up and realizing that their parents are crummy people and fleeing, leaving the older folks to continue to age and grouch. Their heyday is over. Let them die the slow death of ignominy they deserve.
  22. Well, now you remember! And I am an introvert and am in a constant war against being socially awkward, so feel free to approach me and chat if you like. I'd say you can find me by watching for the redhead (my hair is much shorter now than it was last year), but I'm going to be costuming heavily and Saturday and Sunday will involve wigs.
  23. Heh. We met last year, actually. I'm trying to remember the exact circumstances - was it you and your girlfriend with Ted on the MARTA line that I randomly ran into?
  24. Um...there are a bunch of small creeks around that are all part of the Missouri River watershed. But again, we're miles from the big river.
  25. OK, good. I'd hate to have to head down there and bust some kneecaps.
