Having a Bad Day?: Get 'yer Hugs here!!
Kaymyth replied to Curious Anamaximder's topic in General Discussion
I...imagine you are. We're probably going in May, when the tourism season is slow. Hee! His issues mostly have to do with the corporation side of Disney. He loathes the idea of giving them money. Maybe someday I'll crack him open enough to get him to agree to Epcot. You...could secretly replace the Jolly Ranchers with Hershey's Kisses? -
Elendese? Elendish? Elendelinarian? Heh, that makes me kind of want a sandwich.

Disney World in Florida is superior to Disneyland anyway. You've got Epcot! Epcot is way cooler than the other Disney theme parks. I'm pretty sure our planned vacation this year is going to be to FL, but James has issues with Disney so we'll probably be going to Universal instead. Harry Potter Wizarding World, here we come! -

Things That Happen In The Office: *ThirdGen IM's me with a terrible Mistborn joke* *three seconds later, I see him walking past my cube* Me: "That was terrible! You are a terrible person, and you should feel bad!" *ThirdGen proceeds to do a victory dance* -
I haven't hit it since that first night, but with everything going on I've also been a lot more self-conscious about my upvoting.

Oh, man, that would've been brutal. I'm still trapped in the Geek Social Fallacy conundrum of how two of my favorite characters just do not get along so badly.

Now you understand! If there was any Sanderson that would draw me into fanfic, it was Mistborn Era 2. And it did. But man, I have work to do on the final draft before it goes up. -

We're not sure, really. Hopefully not as long as the last time we had someone get into a bad wreck; that person was out for 8 months. I think I would've stayed with you just on general principles. Of course, she'd also probably think that I'm even worse than you are, so my solidarity is a bit empty. But I would! -
I don't necessarily disagree. As Blaze said, it's a fine line to walk. I'm not saying that it should figure into the final decision, I'd just like to see a touch more understanding in relation to it. I know that *I* was a hot mess when I was a teenager. Heck, I was still a hot mess into my twenties. When the system went down temporarily, I saw mostly people being upset at not being able to give out votes. Nobody seemed all that concerned about not being able to get them. I think this opinion is probably quite widespread.

For those of you puzzling over the value being places on imaginary internet points: Please remember that there is a sizeable proportion of members these days made up of younger folks and/or people who suffer serious social anxiety. For many of them, the Shard has become a social support system. The rep system has been incorporated into their interactions and mini-culture - it has value because they have an emotional investment in it and the people that they give/receive those points from. It isn't a number on the screen, it's a tool to show appreciation and validation, and an indication of feedback to show their feelings and support to one another. Note that I'm not saying that this is necessarily the right viewpoint, I'm just pointing out the reasons why people would have strong feelings about the changes to the system. And I guarantee that the most vulnerable of those people won't post on this thread; their social anxiety is too great. I think we can continue to have this discussion while still extending a bit of kindness to the ones who have gotten emotionally wrapped in the reputation system.

Thanks. I think we've got it covered. Someone's also making sure that she gets the paperwork to apply for the company's employee help fund. Mostly now I think we need to have someone pop in and check on her periodically; the accident basically shattered her hip. She's in pretty rough shape. -

So, a little while back, one of my coworkers was in a pretty bad car accident. She hit a patch of black ice, totaled the car, had to have major surgery done, etc. Come to find out today, she's been discharged from the hospital, though she can't really fend for herself yet. And her family refuses to so much as lift a finger to help her. They've apparently told her that it was all her fault, that <Deity> was punishing her for X reason and she deserved it. I am a quivering ball of rage right now. We're pulling together at work and doing a food drive, trying to gather enough stuff that requires minimal cooking effort so she doesn't have to wobble around on crutches in the kitchen. I hit Costco on the way home from work tonight. You can bet people will be checking in with her periodically to see if she needs anything. But her family is a bunch of horrible people who need to go suffer a horrible fate. -

I'm pretty sure you just won about six different Adulting merit badges right there. -
I think that'd work just fine. Bonus points if the next time you make a drink for someone, you wear a ridiculous strikingly appropriate and fashionable hat.

I remember your pain. I'm sorry. Ugh. Vaccinating pets is a huge deal in the States. On the bright side, the human injections aren't nearly as bad as they used to be. You don't have to get the shots in your abdomen anymore. (Though if the dog didn't break the skin, I think you probably would've been OK anyway. ) -

Delightful couldn't have put it better. What's going on in your physical brain is no less real than the heart condition that means my father-in-law needs a pacemaker. There is nothing wrong with needing help. You are not a failure because of it, and you will get through it. -

If you move there, you will only be a couple hours or so from Riverside, IA. It's the future birthplace of Captain James T. Kirk! If I can do that occasionally and still be accused of adulting too hard, then this argument is invalid. (I've been waiting simply ages for a good excuse to use this here.) -

Well, I meant that in response to the previously stated notion that Steris had a very lonely life with nobody to talk to about anything. That just isn't true; she and Marasi seem to have a fairly strong bond. But no, asking Marasi about this sort of thing would not work on so many levels.
