Szeth Had an Honorblade...Or Did He? [spoilers]
kraefzke replied to Shardlet's topic in Stormlight Archive
The WoB that you cannot bond an Honorblade does not necessarily exclude the existence of a bond. It could be interpreted as "you cannot bond an Honorblade [yourself]". Maybe it becomes bonded, when it is given to you, however.- 43 replies

Sure, but the WOR readings thread isn't actuall needed any longer, so maybe some admin could unpin that one and pin this one in its stead... just a suggestion. Because this thread is really great. And should really, really be pinned.

Szeth Had an Honorblade...Or Did He? [spoilers]
kraefzke replied to Shardlet's topic in Stormlight Archive
Oh yeah, your right! Totally forgot about Starfalls! So, Dalinar's Blade there at the end was not Taln's Blade, but he clearly indicated it to be so. Why? Or did I misread/misinterpret/misremember that part? Also, where did that Blade come from? One of the won ones?- 43 replies

Good point! I must admit, I hadn't thought about stormlight being able to substitute for oxygen (stupid of me). This definitely makes it plausible for her to survive on stormlight alone. I still like my idea better though. Just not enough to start betting away body parts

Szeth Had an Honorblade...Or Did He? [spoilers]
kraefzke replied to Shardlet's topic in Stormlight Archive
It could just be that they talk about "bondin" in-universe but the WoB tells us that they're using the wrong term. It could also be, that Szeth actually didn't have an honourblade, but the infamous third kind of shardblade (I don't think it's honorblade - live spren shardblade - dead spren shardblade, because technically we didn't see any live spren shardblades in WoK - though I suppose Shallan repeatedly thinking of hers could count; also, on a completely different note: could the third kind be "not Roshar - native shardblade, i.e. Awakened sword??) And why did Dalinar's supposed Honorblade screem? And how could that shardbearer (forgot the name) in the duel hear his Blades screem when Kaladin touched it? I know, getting a little off-topic right now, but I feel this is all connected and didn't want to open another thread for these thoughts. We really need to find out what the three kinds of shardblades are. Maybe if we phrase it like an easy yes/no-question, we won't get RAFO'd: "So, Brandon, when you told us, during an earlier Q&A, that we had seen three kinds of shardblades in WoK, you meant honorblade - live spren shardblade - dead spren shardblade, right?" Someone try!- 43 replies

Do we know for certain that Willshapers have the Elsecalling surge? I can't remember at the moment. If so, that would be a blow to my idea, but it still could hold if it were as you suggested: That Elsecalling deals in the spiritual realm additionally to the cognitive. Edit: Thanks Moogle! I hadn't noticed that! This actually goes very well with my idea that she went to both places: Spiritual for survival/resurrection and cognitive to chat with Highspren (and maybe to soulcast her body into liveable shape again before returning to physical or something).
-
It more felt (to me) like number 3 is part or further explaination of number 2, so that 2 and 3 would be one ideal in total. But it's entirely possible that they are seperate. Do we have any confirmation for either interpretation?
-
No, nothing solid. Call it a hunch, a feeling, whatever. It's like when we first heard about Red Carpet Once White, when everybody thought Shallan's father was the "monster" that should not be held in love. To me it automatically felt that the phrase referred to Shallan herself and I was the first to say so here on the forum. It took quite a while for anyone to come up with the same idea and the best reactions I got at first were "possible, but I don't buy it". This feels the same somehow ... there is a lot of talk about souls throughout SA and the soul is the part of a thing that resides in the spiritual realm. Then there is Wit, referring to the "other side", why not call it Shadesmar? Of course, this could be a Hoidism [witticism?], but it doesn't feel that way to me. And a blade through the heart should definitely kill the body pretty fast and it just would feel more natural to me, if her soul did the survival-trick via the spiritual realm (which would probably make it a resurraction-trick instead of mere survival). I also suspect that Szeths resurraction went along the same lines, though by Nalan's words fabrial-powered.

As I said, this is merely speculation. We know that the cognitive is the realm of the spren, their origin and their home, but since there are plenty of spren in the physical, how can we exclude some being in the spiritual as well? And who's to say that Jasnah didn't pay a visit to both realms? You make a valid point but since you didn't say anything I hadn't already taken into consideration, I won't so easily discard the idea.
-
Wild speculation ahead: Could Elsecalling be related to the Spiritual Realm? This is just based on Wit's / Hoid's going on about the "other side", but with Jasnah's apparent death to start with there might be something to this.... Maybe for Elsecallers, the Nahel Bond provides some means to travel the Spiritual Realm and return to the Physical without the soul passing on or something. Also, "Elsecalling" sounds that way (to me).

I apologize if this has been discussed before, but I really wonder: I assumed Nalan and his companion - who may or may not be, but probably is another Herald, though Jezrien explicitly forbade them to seek out each other - were there to observe Szeth's operation. But on my reread of WoK (which I just started), I couldn't help but noticing them talking with Elhokar, shortly before Szeth went to kill the king. Was that just idle chatter? Nalan doesn't seem to be the type for that. So now I'm wondering if there was more to it. Also, what part did they play in Gavilar's death?

I was not referring to anyone in particular. It's just that a lot of the returns (and tbh, there were too many of those for my taste) felt a little deus (quite literally in some cases) ex machina. I like me a little bit more of (blunt) foreshadowing....

Now that chapter 7 is finally available, I can comment on this: I will not accept a death without a body or direct WoB. She may have survived somehow and I certainly hope so! I just don't hope her comeback (if there is one) will be too malazan-y, if you get what I mean.

Walking the dog now. Actually considered photographing a few pages to continue reading while doing so but refrained. Just started Part 2, so most of what I saw up to now was prerelease material. The few things that weren't, however,.... Just let me say it's hard not being allowed to share my thoughts right now. Also, I'm tempted to ask somebody who has already finished the book abou how certain things will work out, but for now, I will try and read for myself and discuss when I'm through (which won't be before tuesday, as I am a slow reader, so by then I will be allowed to say anything I like). Edit: Storming dog is taking his sweet time. I'm sure he's doing it on purpose.

Good to hide that behind a spoiler tag. I'm not sure if it goes as far as violating spoiler policy of the forum, but it certainly has a spoilery feel. Also, this comment intrigued me even more. I actually asked my wife to open the amazon box. I can now confirm that my copy of WoR is waiting at home. Which is just awesome. I will start reading in .... about 4-5 hours. I might be tempted to skip dinner to make that 3-4 hours.

Yay! My wife just texted me that it arrived. This will be the storming best weekend ever! I just hope the pack contains the correct book. But Amazon wouldn't make such mistakes. Would they? Great, now I need her to open the pack and verify the content is WoR! Here's to paranoia!

Anticipationspren thick all around me now: Online tracking reports "being delivered". Only direct shardic intervention can stop me now from getting my early copy!!!

Don't you talk about those! I'm anxious enough as it is! If my early copy doesn't go into delivery really soon, that means that the local post stormed it and it'll sit less than 15 minutes from my home over the weekend with no way for me to pick it up! (They don't hand out anything at the hub, for obvious reasons).

While I doubt that it would bring Brandon to the forums, I do really like that idea! Disclaimer, I mean.

Storm you all, I should be WORKING, not getting my own hype up ever more by reading how hyped you are! This review and forum really kill any semblance to productivity!

I got free shipping from am.de. I could have paid for overnight delivery (and receive it today), but it would have cost almost again as much as the book itself, so I took the risk. I really hope it's here tomorrow though. If not, I just might be angry enough to send it right back and wait till it's cheaper after all! Edit: Looking good! Book just arrived in my country! Only 300 more kilometers to my door! Now, they just have to get it on the storming truck so it's ready for delivery tomorrow. Edit 2: O my shard! I misread! The book is actually already in the hub station for my city! No 300 km! Basically, around the corner! That means it WILL be delivered tomorrow, barring really weird stuff! Yeah! First time ever I got an early copy of anything! So hyped for this book right now!
-
Well, Amazon tells me I'll get mine tomorrow. Plenty of anticipationspren and also a few joyspren here. Just thinking about the possibility of a delay makes angerspren appear though!

Me too is hitting refresh! Though I know it won't be delivered before tomorrow! I just hope my country's post doesn't screw up.....if I don't get it tomorrow I'll be mightily disappointed!

I had a hard time yesterday on reading thad amazon.de ships the book early. I prefer reading on the iphone, small screen and all, because it fits so easily in pocket. I had planbed on buying the hardcover for my bookshelf eventually, when it got a little cheaper. Now I had three options: a ) Stick to the original plan and wait for Tuesday. Storm that! b ) Cancel the Kindle preorder, order the hatdcover and carry it around for the next week (slow reader and only real opportunity to read is on the train to work). Better from a financial perspective but really a pain always to have to carry two to three pounds of book in your rucksack, not to mention that I like my paper books to look as unread as possible which just isn't possible if you carry it around all day. So storm that too! c ) Buy the book twice RIGHT NOW, just so I can start reading on the weekend and continue on phone from Tuesday on. Storms yeah! I even considered overnight shipping to start reading today, but spending almost as much on shipping as on the book itself went too far. Still, amazon tells me it'll arrive tomorrow, so I'm going to have a really busy weekend of reading! Big thanks to the people telling me about the amazon.de-thing!
