Yeah, I know. The evidence is That's kinda flimsy, but when you combine that with

Well, I agree with everything you said, there. I just think it's a bit much to say that the Parshendi are little more than spren. I think I just misinterpreted your meaning, though, because I'd bet money on subsequent Stormlight books proving pretty much every point you make true.
-
I think you're wrong about that. Spren are little bits of power, shaved off of a Shard. Parshendi are very close to humans, but they are more closely attuned to the Cognitive realm. That gives them an affinity to the spren: bonding with these artifacts of the Cognitive realm gives them their form. But they are not all that closely related to spren. If they were, they'd essentially be a race of Splinters.
-
Anyone else think they're the Parshendi? This idea is based on something Kabsal said. I know the ardents' ideas are suspect, but I think this one is based on truth.
-
Too Uncanny Valley. That doesn't bother me like it did most people, but it would bother me if everyone didn't want to watch it because they thought the characters looked creepy.
-
I absolutely agree. A Stormlight series would still be really tough to pull off. Because of the spren, almost every single scene would require CGI. Granted, the spren would be relatively cheap and easy, but the chasmfiends would be another matter altogether. Then you've got the crazy Surgebinder fight scenes... Plus, you've got the difficulty of creating a completely alien world, where most people don't even know what soil is. Game of Thrones has a huge budget, and it doesn't come close to presenting as fantastic a world as would be needed for Roshar. I'd love a Stormlight series, but I bet we're at least 10 years away from even having the technology to do it satisfactorily.

Maybe. I was just thinking about high fantasy movies, in general, and potential Cosmere adaptations, in particular. The only really successful high fantasy movies were the LotR adaptations (and I guess The Hobbit, too, even if they took a lot of criticism). In recent years, anyway. I feel like high fantasy needs a big win for Hollywood to be willing to invest in something like a Cosmere adaptation.
-
Well, she's 31 now. Yes, that's a bit young, but only by a few years. This is fantasy casting, so I suppose the realities of making an adaptation don't apply so much, but if one were to be announced today, she'd probably be old enough by the time filming actually began. Speaking of realistic expectations for fantasy adaptations, I'm really hoping that the Warcraft movie does well. While I've never really played the games and know relatively little about the story, it would be great for a good high fantasy movie to do well at the box office. If that happens, we've got a much better chance of really seeing some Sanderson adaptations happen. Of course, that would probably be Mistborn, not The Stormlight Archive (but that would still be super awesome).

How about Frieda Pinto for Jasnah?

How about Irrfan Khan as Sadeas? http://gossipkatta.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/irfan-621x414-300x200.jpg

Let me just say that I appreciate that about this forum sooooooo much. There are plenty of sites out there where they lock your threads, ridicule you for not knowing the rules, then downvote your reputation to the point that no one will ever listen to anything you say. I know that has nothing to do with this thread, but I wanted to take the opportunity to acknowledge that fact because it is so nice to be welcomed rather than face a bunch of jerks who are more interested in maligning n00bs than having a discussion.

Parshendi + Gemheart? (WoR-Spoiler)
DSC01 replied to Shaukan-son-Hasweth's topic in Stormlight Archive
I don't think it's terribly likely, but it isn't hard to imagine that they're freaking out because the dead aren't supposed to be touched until they go through a funeral ceremony involving removing the gemhearts. I dunno. I don't really care, honestly. Doesn't seem like a terribly important detail. -
Parshendi + Gemheart? (WoR-Spoiler)
DSC01 replied to Shaukan-son-Hasweth's topic in Stormlight Archive
You know, for decoration. Heck, those could actually be the gemhearts of fallen Parshendi that they're wearing to honor the dead. -
Hmm... Well, maybe. Hopefully, we'll see some of the more obscure feruchemical powers featured soon and figure out how they work.

Some things I've been pondering during my 38th reread of WOR
DSC01 replied to KevinTheHerdazian's topic in Stormlight Archive
Man, you guys are insane. People think I'm crazy for having read The Wheel of Time three times (for context, I didn't read any of it until the whole series had been released; I started reading in January, 2014). And my first WoR re-read came exactly one week after my first reading. But 38 times?! Do you read other books? There are other books, you know. Some of them are pretty good... Just some good-natured ribbing, by the way. If that's your thing, go for it. -
I haven't read that series (actually... maybe I did like 20 years ago, if it's the vaguely remembered series I'm thinking of), but Brandon has said that Hoid always turns up in the right place, at the right time because of a feruchemical ability he has. I assume it's a Yolish variant of Feruchemy, 'cause I can't think of a way to use the Scadrian variety to do that.

Weird. Then I pretty much completely misunderstand how it works. I had the impression that it rewrites a person or thing's Cognitive impression of itself.

Issue with Info on WoK Purelake Interlude (various articles)
DSC01 replied to DSC01's topic in The Coppermind Wiki
Okay, I just checked it out, and it does make the most sense for him to be responding to Galladon. The only alternative is that he was kind of saying, "And what objection do you have, Demoux?" That is a bit of a stretch, though. It seems very odd, though. Vao and Temoo are exactly how someone might mishear Baon and Demoux. -
And Hollywood really expects us to not pay any attention to the ages of the actors they cast for stuff. They could have just omitted the in Watchmen that identifies Rorshach as a 35-year-old man, but they went ahead and kept it, even though the actor was close to 50 (and looked it).
-
It seems to me that Forgery is primarily Cognitive in its effects. Making changes that affect one's spiritweb would therefore be very difficult.

Oh, man! What if this finally solves the mystery of (Stormlight/Mistborn spoilers)

I almost suggested this myself, oddly enough. I came up with the notion independently, too, which is really weird. Good choice for Kaladin, too.

I imagined Alethi as looking more or less Caucasian, just with epicanthic folds on their eyes and a darker skin tone. That's pretty much how the illustrations portray them. I think all of the races on Roshar don't have exactly corresponding representations on Earth. It would be pretty easy to use makeup and such to achieve the right effect, but that would probably be somewhat problematic in today's political climate. Maybe if there was enough racial diversity, across the board, and every cast member was made up to more precisely match the Rosharan races, things would be okay. But I still think that there'd be accusations of whitewashing, blackface, yellowface, etc. Indian and Islander actors would probably be the closest fit, but many of them would still require makeup to get the epicanthic folds right. I think that Sendhil Ramamurthy (Dr. Suresh from Heroes) could make a good Kaladin, actually, based on looks alone (though he is a bit old). Temuera Morrison would be a good Dalinar, I think. But both of them would probably need the eye makeup, and people might consider that offensive. Check this for why I think Temuera Morrison would be good as Dalinar: http://vignette2.wikia.nocookie.net/scorpionking/images/a/a9/Temuera_morrison.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20120404023316

[Theory] Highstorms contain a gateway to the Cognitive realm
DSC01 replied to Rockbud's topic in Stormlight Archive
Sounds right to me. I wish I had something add, but all I can say is that I'd say you're exactly right about Highstorms and at least partially right about the Parshendi rhythms. So, have an upvote. -
I think Mistborn is actually going to end up being more revealing. I didn't think so, initially, believing that Stormlight would be the big Cosmere-revealing series. I'm sure it will have a lot in store for us, but in Mistborn they can actually talk to a Shardholder, not just Splinters. But to get back to Nalthis, I can't really put my finger on why, but I find the world the least compelling of all the Cosmere settings. Almost all of the Cosmere magic systems excite me with their awesomeness, but Awakening just doesn't do it for me. Vasher's explanations of how the magic works were more interesting to me than the magic itself. Honestly, I'd be just as happy to have the information we're missing from Nalthis filled in via Ars Arcanum and little tidbits in other books. But, of course, I'm still going to be ridiculously excited when Nightblood is released.
