  1. I get why people think Summer Glau would be good as Vin. She'll really look good in all the stunt work. However, I'd like for the producers to make more of an effort to look for another actress. Sylar with spikes! Awesome. McAvoy is an interesting choice. He can certainly project Elend's earnestness and intelligence. But his suitability would depend on who is cast as Vin, I think. Somerhalder is great in The Vampire Diaries. I think he can pull off Zane's controlled insanity well enough. Or you can try Joseph Morgan, who currently plays Klaus on the same show. (Although... okay, Morgan might be a little too bad-chull.) Ellen Page. Arrrrgh. Good enough actress, but she's just not Vin to me.
  2. Welcome, Brad! I'm kinda new here myself, and I definitely haven't heard of the Cosmere until KChan mentioned it and I went wandering around the Coppermind Wiki. Hope you enjoy being here. Everyone's been fun and funny!
  3. An official Title! Awesome! Congratulations, Kuri!
  4. Yay! Well, THG is rather dark, but yeah, it should be considerably "lighter" in tone than WoK. Enjoy!
  5. I'm on Twitter as @almeldiel as well. I tweet a lot, sometimes in my native language, but usually in English.
  6. Well then, I guess it's as good a time as any to do a Harry Potter re-read.
  7. My intro to fantasy was Zilpha Keatley Snyder's "So You Want To Be A Wizard," which I had read when I was in elementary school. (Which probably says a lot about my age... Oh dear.) My intro to more serious epic fantasy was "Dragons of Autumn Twilight" by Weis and Hickman, which isn't a bad intro at all because it prepared me for all those long-running epic fantasies.
  8. For those who don't mind reading younger, I recommend the new release, Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor. This veers into paranormal romance, but the worldbuilding and the writing is exceptional. There's also Scott Westerfeld's rather ambitious steampunk/alternate history series which just concluded, the Leviathan series.
  9. That's great to know! I hope you like it. I've just finished Alcatraz and the Evil Librarians, and now I'm onto Elantris (even though Alcatraz 2 is waiting in my To Read pile)! I'm reading Brandon's books in a haphazard fashion, I know.
  10. While I had heard of Brandon before, his first work that I've read is actually that free copy of Warbreaker that's available for download on his website. I started looking for his other books since. While I agree that this isn't his best novel, I feel it's easier for the uninitiated to get into this than Mistborn because it's harder for people who are new to epic fantasies to invest in a series compared to a stand-alone. I think that Warbreaker does a good job of getting people interested in Brandon and his other books, and it certainly doesn't hurt that you can get it legally for free. I'd buy an actual copy if I see it in my local book store (but I haven't yet). It's a risk on Brandon's (and his publisher's) part, but I think it's paid off for him. Like the other respondents here on the thread, I think it probably isn't a good idea for him to do this a lot, but I think his name's getting more and more well-known that he probably wouldn't have to do it again.
  11. Thank goodness he still plans to continue writing the series! I've only just finished Book 1, and I intend to hunt down the rest of them now. It's such a fun book!
  12. Hi, Kuri! And I didn't know there was such a thing as a Resident Person of Unimportance and Purveyor of Hugs and Insanity. I love this place already! You guys are all hilarious (that's a very sincere compliment. )
  13. I had exactly that same reaction when this project was first announced. I was actually surprised he went the "sort of steampunk" way. Have you guys seen the super-stylized character banners?
  14. Definitely, YEAH! I'm still having this internal debate: do I read A Clash of Kings after Season 2 of the HBO series is finished, or do I read it before? Yay, The Hunger Games! Do you plan to read the entire series?
  15. KChan: Thanks for the advice on the potential spoilers! I'll definitely tread carefully around here. Thanks so much for the warm welcome, and of course, the cookie! Joe: Haha, thanks! I could not resist the translation offer, so... My field is Geomatics / Geodetic Engineering -- earth measurements/positioning, mapping, and geographic information systems. *looks for Nerd Smilie but fails* Thanks for the welcome, CrazyRioter! I finally spied a UK Trade Paperback of The Way of Kings in a local store, and my fingers (and toes) are crossed for it still being there come payday!
  16. Hi, LightReader! I'm new here, too. We have the same dream job: getting paid to read books!
  17. Hello, 17th Shard! My forum name (and username in most places around the web) is Almeldiel (it's in Quenya, which a Tolkien language scholar kindly derived from my real name). I have a very technical Engineering job in real life, but I'm also a book blogger (mostly fantasy, SF, YA) and freelance writer for the Lifestyle section of a local news website. Although I've been hearing Brandon's name for a while now, I only started reading his books in January of this year. Since then, though, I've become a fan, and have managed to finish Warbreaker and the Mistborn Trilogy. Elantris and 2 Alcatraz books are waiting patiently in my To Read pile. I'm currently hunting down the rest of Alcatraz, as well as The Way of Kings. I'm seriously considering starting The Wheel of Time just to get to the ones that Brandon wrote, but that's a long series, and I've recently just finished catching up on 2 other long series (10+ books each), so that might be a challenge for another time. I've been stalking this site (moderately!) for Brandon news, but was a little hesitant to register before. But I couldn't resist the ARC giveaway, so here I am! After reading some of the Forum topics, I realized this is a fun place, so I'll do my best to participate.
  18. I'm nervous about anything Paul W.S. Anderson, but this does look great! I hope they don't mess it up; it'll be a shame, with all those great actors involved.
  19. I was reading A Game of Thrones, but put it aside for a while when I was given an ARC of "Daughter of Smoke and Bone" by Laini Taylor. Laini is a great writer with a very lyrical style.
  20. Just commented to join the Alloy of Law giveaway! Yay!

  21. Just signed up, and would definitely love to win! (I really don't know why I never signed up before. I just keep reading the news posts. )
