That was WAY more than I expected, thanks!

That's what I thought. Still, the creation of such a structured magic system (Aons are the most flexible magic system we know of, but they have a strong structure), happening without divine intervention is weird, to say the least. And that random earthquake just in the right place is super fishy... But alas, we just don't know enough. Thanks for the answer @Calderis

I don't have Elantris on myself now to check and was discussing with a friend about the Reod. I'm quite sure that the passing of Odium through Sel was too long ago, way before the time of Raoden, spintering Devotion and Dominion (people say D&D... I can only think of Dungeons and Dragons with those letters), and creating the AonDor, thus, in a way, creating elantrians that can use it. This is right, isn't it? What caused the earthquake, the Reod? My friend defends that it was Odium's passing that caused the Reod, the earthquake, while splintering the other Shards. In her opinion, Elantrians existed before the splintering, he thinks they would not be randomly created just because a sudden surplus of energy in the Cognitive... And it would be "too bad" that an earthquake just randomly happens to break the focus point of the magic in that world. She kinda has a point... What is exactly the timeline here? Devotion and Dominion get to Sel, Odium breaks them, Elantrians appear to make use of the AonDor, Raod randomly happens Devotion and Dominion get to Sel, Create Elantrians, Odium breaks both the shards and the land, causing the raod. Third option?

Now that we're talking about Awakening soulcast corpses, don't rosharian Lighteyes get theyr corpses soulcast into something (stone or iron, i can't remember)? Now imagine Vasher discovers how to awaken with stormlight, and gets into a crypt: Instant army! But that's a little bit off topic now
-
This. This wins. As long as you have access to a Soulcaster and Stormlight it meets the requirements for "once living" while avoiding the harvesting, forging, and everything else. Not only is it less evil, but it's also much less work. That's perfect too! Didn't see your edit before Stark. Anyway, this works for building a golem, not a blade. Well, I guess you could made it out of bone or... maybe cut a slab out of those living islands in Roshar, carve the sword, then soulcast into steel? Well, all my endeavors were based on working in Nalthis alone, not merging magic systems. Mixing those makes almost anything is possible
-
He's already draining the blood of some people to kill them, might as well put that to good use Edit: I know Steel is not Iron, but you add a VERY SMALL % of carbon to make steel, it's almost negligible. The weight of human bones compared to the weight of a steel golem is negligible too. Also the numbers were rounded so I thought useless to take into account these small percentages
-
This is hardcore. For 5kg of blood iron you needed to syphon perfectly 1320 humans. A whole golem, human sized, made of iron? The human body is mostly water 60/70% iirc, so we take water's density for a human body. 1.0. Steel is 8.05 g/cm3. If the average human male weights 75kg, we multiply that for the density of steel we need 603kg of steel aprox to do that. As said before, one man has ~3.8gr of Iron in their body. Divide the 603000 gr we needed for the cuantity of it per human, and we need to extract the juice out of, hold yourselves 'cause this is a big one: 158.685 humans. That if we have a perfect method of extracting the iron. Count double that if our efficiency is not as good. Most expensive golem ever.
-
The whole thing is just a big extrapolation out of facts. As you said, is gruesome and dark as it comes, it would leave the process of creating Inquisitors at the "slightly questionable" spectrum of things if this thing were done. The fact that it checks on the few questions I asked myself doesn't make it even probable... possible, maybe? I'm sure there is a way simpler and more reasonable method of awakening steel, and this method isn't even contemplated to everyone but... It does feel like a possibility, doesn't it?

First and foremost: I'm on my phone and my access to internet is flimsy, so I couldn't search if this had been talked about before or not, and my grammar and format might be plainly wrong so, excuse me on both ends, please. I had a lot of thinking time today (where i have to wait in the car and only wait...) and my mind wandered towards the Cosmere as usual. It's very simple, really, but I cane up with something: When you awaken something there are 2 things that ease or handicap the process: if the thing had been previously alive, and if it had a human shape (or at least part of one, like... A foot) The problem with awakening iron or its alloys is that they were never alive. You might make an iron leg to substitute one you lost but awakening that would be hella difficult. But make it out of bone, or wood, and it's a lot more doable. Here is the thing: Trace Elements, or Oligoelements, are small, minuscule amounts of material that our body has and needs but are in such a low percentage that we don't actually count as having them. Iron is one of those Oligoelements, used to make blood (i think?) and the average male adult has 3.8gr of the things in his body (a little less for women). A very small amount. But it's Iron that has been part of a living body, that "remembers" being alive. I'm not actually sure how much iron does a sword actually needs. Let's say it weighs 5kg. You'd need around 1320 humans to acquire that much iron. Let's also assume our extracting methods are not 100% effective... Let's say that we actually siphon correctly half of a persons iron with our procedure and the rest goes down the sink with the rest of the blood. 2640 humans, for a sword that's 50% easier to awaken than one made from mined ores (as it isnt in human shape) It hardly seems practical (if at all), but imagine you GET to do that. Invest a wallop of breaths in the thing, command it to slay evil, and it actually works. damnation... Suddenly, if this method is known, other people might try to repeat it and slaughter another 2640 humans. Wouldn't it be a secret worth killing to keep?

There are two questions that have been nagging me lately... First and foremost, I am a very dedicated fan of sanderson's work but I don't lurk too much in these forums, so something like this might be common knowledge, but my Search Surge isn't strong enough to find an answer, so I decided to ask. Please excuse me if there are already answers to this. When an Awakener (the guys with powers on Nalthis, Warbreaker novel) uses his Breaths to animate something, he/she gives them to the object, and in turn this object gains pseudo-life and is suddenly capable of moving by itself. That implies that it should be USING the breaths to power this movements, it needs energy to move. But it's not the case. When the awakener ends the effect, recovers all the breaths used, intact. So... there is a surplus of energy in the world. This definitively doesn't follow the laws of thermodynamics and it makes me wonder: Is there something I don't get? Yeah, color is used as a catalyst... Like Allomancers use metals, I guess. But still... And the second question: If I had a stage light with some color filters pointing at the floor just at the feet of an Awakener... could he/she use the color that the light is granting to the floor to Awaken things, and thus Awaken continuously, as long as he/she still has Breaths?

World misconceptions that are difficult to shift.
Helwar replied to ljósmóður's topic in Stormlight Archive
This so much. Also, Rock was always black in my mind during my first reading of the Stormlight Archive. I dunno why but I always thought he was the same kind of character as Galladon was to Raoden, and I just got them mixed up. Also, I was pretty much annoyed when everyone said Horneaters had red hair, and the only example of a Horneater we had was a black man (in my mind at least ) During my second reading, I noticed the "Red hair" thing when Brandon describes him... And then I imagined some kind of Scottish big guy with radioactive white skin and a mop of red hair. I'd not been until I did read this thread that I learned that Rock is neither of those, but a red head with TAN skin. It's pretty hard to wrap my head around this particular idea. Also, BS likes to troll us with the "asian" thingies. At first I thought that the Shin were asian (they are SMALL, and have that particularly-asian-like-ish name), then I thought EVERYONE else was Asian, because Shin have round eyes and pale skin. Now, I decided that Roshar is unlike our world. In Roshar, when your mother is blonde and your father brunette, you end of having locks of either color instead of a healthy in-between... So... I decided that Alethkar inhabitants have "european" eyes, tan skin and mostly black hair. Shin people, are small and pale, and have EXCEPTIONALLY round and big eyes. And no-one is asian. Well, maybe those with the extra-long eyebrows... -
Sanderson's "Write About Dragons" Creative Writing Course
Helwar replied to Endurant Archivist's topic in Reading Excuses
I have one question about the third class... At the second video Sanderson mentions a character creation method named.. Dacie... Or dacia... or something like that. I can't really find anything like that on the internet (although I kind of get the idea of what he means) Have you any idea of how is this actually spelled and what is it exactly?- 87 replies

Sanderson's "Write About Dragons" Creative Writing Course
Helwar replied to Endurant Archivist's topic in Reading Excuses
I'm at 4865 words at the end of what I consider the first chapter of my novella! This is great, having this kind of "group" expecting you to grow and work with them is encouraging. I always thought about writing something serious, but never ended up doing it. I was quite "blocked" at the start, and I would've surrendered long ago if not for the commitment of having three thousand words for today. But in the end I kept trying until the words started flowing by themselves, and then I couldn't stop at 3.000 ^^- 87 replies

Hum... what about using your Divine Breath to heal someone dying from old age? -
the most useless uses for useful powers
Helwar replied to king of nowhere's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Huh, this seems fun. Use stormlight to heal your... ...earring holes. Extra points if you do it while wearing earrings. ...appendix, that was cut long ago, just to have appendicitis again. ...baby teeth, possibly losing the good ones ...umbilical cord ...hair, just after having an expensive haircut. ...himen Lash yourself to the center of the earth. Lash yourself to the rollercoaster seat, just in case... Lash someone's trousers to the seat - prank time! - Lash your hair in place Lash together something that you broke and isn't yours. By the time the stormlight runs out, you'll be far, far away. Use lightweaving to make some money, but instead of changing it for real ones store it in your piggy bank Lightweave yourself as someone really fat, so you have extra space at the metro Lightweave your teacher with some rash or pustules so he goes to the doctor and you avoid taking his class. Use ¿zinc? (I don't remember the metal to riot) to make absolutely everyone's libido raise up like hell. Instant orgy. Use brass soothing to make everyone dull and sour at a concert of multiple bands, until the one that you like plays Use Pewter to make it harder for the nurse to put you an injection (ouch) Iron Pull an injection so it's over soon. Then steel push it away. Steel push an injection so it cannot come near you. Steel push the button of your trousers to use it as a deadly weapon. From now on you have to hold your trousers with your hands... Store heat in a metalmind when you have a thermometer so you appear to be healthy when you are not - when you could easily just tap health... Do otherwise to appear unhealthy when you are not - when you could easily store health... Store strength and agility while you are at the gym. Store mental speed and awakeness while you are studying. Awaken a mannikin to scare people (this would be so fun) Use random awakenings to make something gray. (Or pure white if you are Susebron) Use random awakenings to decolor your hair, so it can be recolored easily Awaken your friend's globes to slap him, while he wears them on. Give your only breath to a random bird that inmediately flies away. Actually, catch a bird, give him ten thousand breaths, announce it on the tv so everyone wants it. Put a little camera on the bird, pay some studio to film it. Then release the bird: You have the best reality show ever. Go to the nightwatcher (is it called like that? the one with the Old Magic in the SA?) and ask him to not remember your visit to him. Go to the "nightwatcher" and ask him to give you memories of some vacations that you didn't have, so you feel like the protagonist of Total Recall. Go to the nightwatcher and ask "not to have a negative boon" -
Sanderson's "Write About Dragons" Creative Writing Course
Helwar replied to Endurant Archivist's topic in Reading Excuses
Hey guys! I've been invited by Endurant Archivist to join you (that happened a few days ago), and I've been toying with the idea since then. I finally decided that I cannot commit to it, because English is not my primary language, that would be Spanish for me. I can read or listen in english perfectly, I do read Sanderson's books in english, Terry Pratchet's and Patrick Rothfuss's too, and I've been re-reading most of the other books that I did read translated, but in the original language (if it happens to be English) because I can now understand it almost perfectly. But, I cannot really express myself properly in English. Not yet. This mail cost me a ton of time to write. Words just don't come to me. So I'm gonna do what you do guys, but I'm gonna do it in Spanish, because that's a language that I can manage to write in a proper way. It would be great to take the classes with you, because having other people expecting your submission and growing at the same time that you do really helps, but for the moment language would be a barrier for me. Why the hell do I tell you that? Because I have been invited and I thought that you deserve a proper explanation of why I want but can't join you, that's all Sorry if it's too long. That being said, I also started the classes and I did obey Sanderson... I left the story that's been nagging me for ages aside and picked up a new one, somewhat related but just tangentially. I know what the story is about and I know some of the characters. I have not started to write it up yet but I do have 3 pages full of worldbuilding and character creation, that helped me to see that the character I wanted to be the protagonist is better suited as a secondary character, and one of the secondary characters was the actual protagonist of the story... So I'm adjusting to it. The story is about the survivors of a world that was much like ours, but ten years ago changed drastically overnight, to the point where it seemed another planet altogether. People died of weird new diseases and only a handful remain, avoiding the new fauna and flora, trying to adapt to the new world, or find a way to make it roll back to what it was.- 87 replies

How do we know that Hoid is a Feruchemist?
Helwar replied to 11thorderknight's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Just to clarify, a couple of quotes from "The Final Empire" implying that TLR was beheaded and burned to a skeleton and still came back. This one from Kellsier: Kelsier nodded. “I searched for two years to find a way to kill him. Men have tried everything—he ignores normal wounds, and decapitation only annoys him. A group of soldiers burned down his inn during one of the early wars. The Lord Ruler walked out as barely more than a skeleton, then healed in a matter of seconds. This one by TLR himself: He stepped forward, feet clicking against broken glass. “You think this is the first time someone has tried to kill me, child? I’ve survived burnings and beheadings. I’ve been stabbed and sliced, crushed and dismembered. I was even flayed once, near the beginning.” So, yeah, beheading wouldn't kill him, and turning him into a walking skeleton wouldn't either. He's wolverine (the actual OP wolverine). And Miles is like that too. My little theory is that he is so used to tap health that his body does it automatically when needed, even without a mind to control it. Also, I don't know if i'm breaking any rule by posting these quotes from the book. Please tell me if I do so I'll erase them :S -
Well, I think Sazed has absolutely no problem because the intents he holds contradict each other in mostly the same amount. If we make a scale of how Ruinous or Preservative is Sazed and mark as point zero how he is without the shards, every shard is trying to push him towards the opposite side of the other, most notably canceling each other. That's why I think Sazed can do whatever he wants because his new shard doesn't have an intend. And if it has an intend, it's not the sum of Ruin + Preservation, but a different one, the intent of being in Harmony, to get along... But that's especulating a lot. Mainly I think that he has the benefits of holding two shards but none of the drawbacks, because those drawbacks cancel each other. Now talking on topic: Basically you believe that Adonalsium was like pizza dough, and when It shattered everyone took a different shaped mold and cut a piece, and the 17th shard is the rest of the dough, full of holes. I don't know... I really don't think that's the case. Something about that idea sounds tasty, but not exactly right. I don't think that the members have any kind of "godly power". Sure they are awesome and powerfull, they can all worldhop and are quite capable... But I think their real strength is just Information. They know about the cosmere, in a way, they break the proverbial fourth wall that's been set on each of the shardworlds. As far as I know you don't need to be ultrapowerfull to worldhop, just know that there are worlds to be hopped in, and know about a method (which is unkown yet). They would not be able to stop the events at the shattered plains with the wave of a hand, as many believe. Information is powerful, but not THAT much. ALSO! Hoid is not part of the 17th shard, anything of these things explain his "powers". And as far as I know he's not that powerfull. As before, he is smart, and knows a lot of things, and knowledge = power. And he is almost inmortal, yes. He has in himself the magic powers of many shardworlds so yes, he is quite the guy, but I wouldn't put him at shard level.

Hi everyone. It’s been a long time since I became aware of the “Cosmere”, and I’ve spent most of the time in these forums (though I do not post much, I like to read you all ). There is one thing that always struck me as weird: The Shattering of Adonalsium, it’s said to have been done by an “opposing force”. As far as I know (and I could be terribly wrong) we know nothing about this force, yet everyone seems to think that’s some kind of “anti-adonalsium”. Another entity as mighty and powerful as him that somehow shattered him. But when I first learned about the shards that sixteen people took up the fragments of Adonalsium the first thing that crossed my mind was: “Hey, those 16 broke a god in Shards and are now having fun being godlike”. Couldn’t it be that the “opposing force that shattered Adonalsium” wasn’t an anti-Adonalsium godlike being but the actual 16 shardholders? We don’t know HOW was Adonalsium shattered, so I have no evidence for and against it… But we do know that they mostly chose their shards. It’s implied on a letter (I think in WoR) that they let Rayse take Odiums shard, fully knowing what it was. Also, neither of the 16 is actually in a hurry to restore Adonalsium. If they were ALL THERE, with all the shards in a single place, and before their intents started to influence them… Why didn’t they try to “fix” Adonalsium? Instead they took their shards and started toying with them in the world, creating their own planets, peoples, magics… I think that it’s not out of the realm of possibility that they shattered Adonalsium on purpose, to take its powers or just because some other reason and the shards were a nice spoil of war. The only thing that I think it’s “against” this theory, is the same letter that we assume is from Cultivation, in wich she says something like they should be careful on Roshar, because they tread lands made by Adonalsium, and she seems to respect him/it. (Sorry I don’t have the exact quote). My answer to this is that you can still respect an enemy, and more so if it’s done in hindsight, when you are in the same position that enemy was. What do you think? Is there anything out there that directly denies this theory?

Theory: Laral will be a Knight Radiant
Helwar replied to Glaring at the Survivor's topic in Stormlight Archive
Broken forever? I don't think of it like that... This "broken soul" thingy is like Snapping in Scadrial, it's a shock that tears your soul so another thing can enter, be it a companion Spren, or simply power from Preservation. It's like...Kellsier broke on the Hatshin mines, or even before for what happened with his wife, and that "tear" on his soul allowed another thing to go there and... patch it. So it's no longer "broken", its different, and might carry that "scar" all of his life, but it's not broken anymore... Same thing with Kaladin... He not only lost Tien, but also lost the image he had of his father when he learned he actually did steal, and then was enslaved, and sent to die on a battlefield while carrying a bridge. That broke him, yeah, and those things never go away, he will never be the same, but that's partially ok, he has Syl now, that has "patched up" his soul with the bond. In some other random case, Elend. He "broke" when his father gave him a beating, and then again when he was dying and got the lerasium bead... But would you say he is broken? Conclusion!: After the events that break the characters, they might not be the same, and those things are not forgotten... But they won't be taking antidepressives all of their lives per se. -
