Had Kaladin be more like himself, he would have been the kind to think "Oh no, I can't save them, why is everyone dying, how are they going to deal with the Assassin in White." At least that's how he react when he face death threat in tWoK, thinking of his men first.
On the other end, I like the idea that Syl has free will and choose to force the bond in order to save him, even if he doesn't respect his oaths anymore.
