The Overlady Reads Mistborn Era 2 & SH!

Hi all and welcome to episode 2 of The Overlady Reads!

This week, we learn about the allomancy breeding program and about how no one seems to care that this is a thing. Also, other stuff that happens in Era 2 and Secret History is talked about briefly.

Find out what happens when someone who doesn't like books with lots of shooting in them reads a book with lots of shooting in it. The results might surprise you! Thanks everyone for kind words on our last video and for your feedback, Lucy actually wrote some of her questions down this time!  Once again, this was super fun to make and we're excited to make the Elantris one next. Let us know what you guys favourite (Or least favourite) parts of Era 2 & Secret History.

Loved the video. I'm super impressed with The Overlady's reading speed. After Part 1, I felt that "Vin and Elend's appearance" in the Secret History was pretty misleading, and knew that the Overlady would be disappointed.

I agree with her take on the "Misting breeding factory" and it not being brought up in Book 2+ 100%. But both of them got a few things wrong: Wayne (who is easily my favorite in Era 2) is around 30-31... not in his late 30s, which would have made his interactions with Marasi a bit too creepy and inappropriate. And, Wax is a descendant of Breeze, not Spook.

I love these videos too, but as an incurable nitpicker I must point something out (which should actually make you feel somewhat better about the series (maybe)). Kandra already can breed technically, its just that without spikes, they are mistwraiths, and no intelligent Kandra choose to have kids because without spikes they aren't sapient. As Kandra are functionally immortal (i.e. don't really die of old age) and nobody is killing them, extinction is a non-issue, and as they don't like to reuse spikes and the creation of spikes is unethical, they no longer make new ones. The reason that koloss can have kids is that their spikes remove sapience to an extent, so their non-spiked children are mostly humans. They have a similar problem to the Kandra when it comes to the finite spike supply (see Allomancer Jak), but because they have an age limit and no qualms about reusing spikes, and because unspiked koloss-born are basically humans, it doesn't create issues in the same way.

Look, my memory isn’t great. I just found Era 2 so forgettable that I bought SoS twice by accident.  Took me like quarter a book to realise that I have read it already.

I always thought that AoL was an experimental book by BS that came off in sales and so we have the fourth book to look forward to now. B)

I think the missing girls story was an allegory to something. Either for urban legends or for things that people put off or procrastinate about.  Either way, I felt there was a lot of breaking the 3rd dimension (acts of God to save the hero) with AoL and I really have forgotten the rest until the final fights in bands of mourning. Same issue with marriage thing.  The BoM start was super confusing again with SoS being so forgettable.

Reading Elantris?  That one is ok, and I am assuming Warbreaker is next.  Lightsong doing his Leaving Las Vegas routine....

Seriously, that's delayed gratification (no pun intended) if one is to get to Way of Kings ending!  And WoK is pretty draggy in the middle, with Kaladin being Mr Cliche and Taravangian/Szeth being utterly bleak.

If the Overlady reads this (or anyone else) - they should try "Shards of Honor" by Lois Mcmaster Bujold (part of the Vorkosigan saga).  Brandon is great, and I read all his stuff, but I sort of put Elantris//Warbreaker at a lower rung compared to SA.

Ha! There's few things I've obsessed over in my life, but the 90s NGE series is definitely one of them. What a show!
