Apple Buys Rights to Entire Cosmere!

Today's a huge news day for Cosmere fans: Apple TV has bought the rights to the entire Cosmere, and Brandon has an insane, unprecedented involvement.

In an article from Hollywood Reporter, they call the deal "unprecedented," and the first stuff to be adapted would be Mistborn for feature films and Stormlight Archive for television. Brandon will have a level of involvement beyond even J.K. Rowling or George R. R. Martin, where Brandon will be "the architect of the universe; will write, produce and consult; and will have approvals."

Brandon commented on this on Reddit, too. He said Apple really wants to be an actual partner with him, and he believes they understand what he wants to accomplish. Apple also does fewer things, but they are higher quality. However, he says he will be working on the Mistborn screenplay for the next five months, full-time. Brandon stated, "I promise not to get too distracted to do books. However, if I want this done right, I need to give some real attention and heart to it now."

I am pretty excited that Apple picked this up. They have a ton of awesome sci-fi shows that get a lot of buzz, but they do lack a headliner fantasy series. But, though I certainly want something well done, I am concerned that the level of Brandon's involvement will make getting bigger books like new Stormlight novels harder for him.

But, Brandon says he will have a stream Friday at 6pm Mountain to discuss this all, so I hope he comments on his overall schedule with Hollywood stuff long term.

I also made a video discussing the news, too!

Put your thoughts down below, or in the forum thread on the subject!

I agree with this and think Apple is a good choice.

Anyway what does it mean by "buys the rights"? Like that still means Brandon can make books, right? It's not like Apple owns the Cosmere? I don't rlly know that much abt this stuff so I'd appreciate an explanation. Does it just mean Apple can, like, make adaptions and stuff? Or are they gonna start selling T-Shirts and lunchboxes and whatever?

They can just make adaptations.

One part of this specific agreement though is that Brandon will have more control than almost any author has ever had in their adaptations. Everything will have to go through him first and he has said that he's doing the Mistborn screenplay for the next few months so maybe he'll do that for all of them, maybe not.

At this point, Brandon has so much control that I feel if the adaptations are trash it's his fault. That gives me a lot of hope because I trust him and I feel like he's doing this the right way. I don't think they'll be trash.

Also there will be a livestream on his YouTube channel today (at 6 if I'm remembering correctly) where he'll definitely explain a little more in detail.

We should all start studying a lot so we seem very smart to the movie fans. Also, let it be known that I am a pre-movie fan. We should all get a little tag :3

I believe they just mean film rights, Brandon can still make books but only Apple TV can make adaptations of Cosmere ones while they have the rights. I found his explanation of the steps here to be helpful in understanding.

It is a good question though on whether or not Apple can make merch. Supposedly you need to put that in the deal as a separate thing. IDK if that's in the deal, but if it is that's just a extra thing that Brandon gave them, not part of the film rights.

lowk what if Brandon was Hoid?

That would be really interesting in concept even if he didn't play Hoid in the movies.

Also didn't he do a YouTube video where he answered that question? I think I saw a thumbnail somewhere but it didn't pop up again :( Maybe my searches just had the wrong keywords...
