lukaash Posted November 3, 2021 Posted November 3, 2021 This is more of a two sided question because I don't really understand how savants works. I know that they mistings start to develop the ability to use their metal better. I always thought this was because they changed their soul (which change their body) to better use the metal. This can't really be seen with a lot of metals, but pewter and tin mistings permanently change their body when they become savants. The first part of my question is: is that how savantism actually works or am I misunderstanding it? A question on the expansion of that topic is it possibility for Hemalurists using savantism. This is because they have access to the power while they have the spike. Could they become a savant in the metal? and then if they became a savant, does the savantism leave with the spike or does the stay with the person?
Quantus he/him Posted November 3, 2021 Posted November 3, 2021 Savantism as intended is a result of overuse of a type of investiture, which causes warping and/or damage to the Spiritweb. It has not always been presented this way, but the intent is for there to always be a downside to it. If it is just a cool trick, it will tend to fall into either a Resonance of two powers or just a rare learned skill. It is confirmed that Hemalurgy cannot transfer Savantism. I believe that is because Savantism is not a localized effect, rather it's more the result of "crossed wires" in the broader spiritweb structure. So a Spike doesn't transfer it because it's not going to steal enough of the relevant spiritweb (ie all of it). However you can get Savantism from overusing powers granted by Hemalurgy, same as if they were natural. Quote CealdishOrbLender Can being an Allomantic Savant be transferred through Hemalurgy? Brandon Sanderson A Savant cannot be, good question. No one's asked me that before. Brandon Sanderson It's possible that it could. Though I'm gonna say, most of the time, no... Lots of things are possible, but I'll give you a "mostly no" on that one. Questioner What about savantism? Is that possible with Hemalurgy? Brandon Sanderson Yes, it is. Skyward Chicago signing (Nov. 16, 2018)
