Shinwarrior Posted October 1, 2021 Posted October 1, 2021 Of the Cosmere, I first read Mistborn and then later came to the Stormlight archives. I've noticed that as I've read them my view on some of the main characters dying has changed just a bit. In my opinion Mistborn has one of the best endings that I've ever read and wasn't super distraught by the fact that Kelsier, Elend, Vin, Doxson, etc got killed during the series. However, now as I'm reading the Stormlight archives I am slightly paranoid that some of the main characters will also be killed before the end of the books. I understand there are plenty of reasons that some main characters might die, but this is more at a look at why I'm more paranoid now as compared to earlier. Looking at Mistborn, I was reading the Wheel of Time around the same and I could possibly have just been more comfortable with people being woven in and out of the pattern. When I look at the Stormlight archives I think it has something to do with the fact that I've been with the characters close to rock bottom for so much longer. To mention a few, Shallan's youth in a super rough home (for various reasons), Kaladin's crippling depression, Teft's addictions (ouch that one hurt), etc. Perhaps I'm rooting for the underdog, or maybe I'm just more emotionally invested in these characters. Perhaps I'm just getting older, I don't know.
Philomath she/her Posted October 4, 2021 Posted October 4, 2021 Yeah. I trust Brandon to be able to write any deaths in a way that I will be satisfied as a reader. Mistborn gives me hope that any deaths in future books will be done well. But I truly just want some of the Stormlight main characters to just have a good happy future.
Brgst13 Posted October 4, 2021 Posted October 4, 2021 I also think that in Mistborn the structure of the story led to a "we can die at any time" vibe. In contrast, the more traditional fantasy structure of Stormlight makes it less likely that characters will die early in the story, but conversely increases the danger as the story progresses. Mistborn kind of warned you not to get attached right from the start. 1
