Is earlier Brandon bolder and more diverse on a macro level?

I think, after the Mistborn trilogy, Skyward (book, not saga) is Brandon's darkest book, even though it can be classified as Science Fiction for YA (which in my opinion is nothing juvenile outside of the Skyward Flight age.)
