A friend of mine had a question so I thought I would ask it here since my answer was pretty weak.

according to the Coppermind Profs weakness is “Failure and the fear of it”

And the books say the reason the reckoners didn’t fight higher epics usually was because he was afraid to fail.

So why was Prof able to fight Steelheart with his powers, woudnt he be afraid that he would fail and then everyone would die because of it?

My answer was that his only job was to distract and its very hard to fail at that since, by virtue of attacking your fulfilling your mandate.

Anyone have a better reason?

They had a plan. They had many different contingencies that they thought might work. Based on their evidence and reasoning, they had a really good chance of winning. If all else failed, they could escape with Prof’s powers and a helicopter.

Prof's fear of failure is what made him win at any cost even his own humanity and sanity. Only by facing that fear and overcoming it like Firefight did could he truly control his powers instead of them twisting and controlling him. Oh and it wasn't just a fear but was a phobia.
