jamesbondsmith He/him Posted February 23, 2021 Posted February 23, 2021 (edited) As the title suggests, does anyone else get the feeling Kaladin is approaching Savanthood? Especially when it comes to the use of Gravitation. Windrunner 'flight' is really just 'falling with style', but at several points he is close to if not indistinguishable from a character like Superman with true self-powered flight. I actually had to put the book down to imagine how it must feel to be doing a loop-the-loop when you aren't propelling yourself but just adjusting which way you fall. What drawbacks would a Gravitation Savant suffer? I would imagine it as gradually losing the 'ground = down' connection, so you're constantly having to lash yourself to the ground in order to not float off like a lost balloon. If this happens I hope Kaladin never sleeps outdoors or goes outside during the Weeping. Edit: I know that Radiants are meant to suffer from the effects of Savanthood less, but I took that to mean that they still suffer the same effects, but it just takes longer to feel them. Kaladin has spent roughly 18 months flying constantly, he'd be making decent headway towards the threshold if not getting dangerously close. Mistborn spoilers: Spoiler I don't remember the exact timeline, but I feel like this is kind of close to the length of time it took for Spook to become a Tin Savant. It could have been even shorter, as he was already a Savant by the time that we saw him again in Hero of Ages. Edited February 23, 2021 by jamesbondsmith
mathiau he/him Posted February 23, 2021 Posted February 23, 2021 Savantism comes far slower to Knight Radiants than to Surge Fabrial users like Soulcasters so I doubt Kaladin is anywhere near savantism Spoiler Questioner 1 Do all Soulcasters risk turning into the element or is it only those using the device? Brandon Sanderson All Soulcasters have an affinity but the ones using the device are locked down much more than the Soulcasters who are Knights Radiant. Questioner 1 So they are protected from being turned into-- Brandon Sanderson Oh no they-- I wouldn't say protected... *clarificaiton* Protected is the wrong term but that event, the savanthood and how it affects them and things like that is much less pronounced if you are a [Knight]. Questioner 1 Or is that counteracted by the healing as well? Brandon Sanderson Healing doesn't have to do with it because-- in cosmere terms there's nothing wrong with your body, your spirit is actually drifting, and so it's not hurting you physically by what's happening with the magics. So it's not the healing but if you have an active bond with a spren it takes a little different path. Let's just say, in simple terms-- Questioner 1 You are not losing body parts to smoke. Brandon Sanderson Yes, you are not using body parts to smoke. Questioner 1 What timeframe does it happen for the normal Soulcasters then? Brandon Sanderson For normal Soulcasters? It takes-- I mean, you've seen it happening in the books. We are talking [about] a process of years even decades, depending on the person. It happens to some-- Questioner 2 Depending on how often they Soulcast? Brandon Sanderson It depends on how often they Soulcast, and it depends on the person. Oathbringer Leeds signing (Dec. 1, 2017) As for what a Gravitation savantism would do, I have no idea. With Allomancy savantism made stopping to burn a metal was dangerous for you but with Soulcasting it made that continuing to Soulcast was dangerous to you, I'm not sure which one would be true with Gravitation. Wait, if being a Stromlight Savant (aka a Savant at using the speed boost and regeneration of Stormlight) works as Allomantic savantism and one of Stormlight is a drive to act then a Stromlight Savant would lose their drive to act, which happen to be the main symptom of depression That'd be quite ironical for Kal if it'd happened 2
garlick Posted February 24, 2021 Posted February 24, 2021 Im having a hard time comparing the two. Spook on one hand didnt become a savant from using just using tin but from flaring it nonstop. But a mistborn compared to a surgebinder is using far less investiure. Surgebinders have extra protection against becoming a savant. So to make a comparison between the 2 is gonna be tuff. I think the fairest way to try would be to compare what they are using to the standard of their own magic systems. So in spooks case hes flaring nonstop for over a year which is far above a normal tin users daily use. As for kaladin I don't think hes using his power that much more then the standard windrunner. Hes not walking around full to the brim with stormlight all the time. Hes not using every excuse to use his powers.(let me float this cup to my hand instead of walking over to grab it). If this is the case I would see the lopen becoming a savant before kaladin. Being a savant comes from excessive use of the powers. Widening the cracks to allow more power to flow into them. And its not suppose to be easy to achieve. In this case I just feel like its increased skill from practice. Your not going to jump out of an airplane with a wing suit and instantly be good at it if you've never even been on an airplane before. Do it everyday for a few hours after a year you'll be doing stunts. Being a savant is taking that to a whole nother level.
