We see this with Szeth vs. Nale and the Windrunners + Sezth vs. Ishar. Ash even confirms him as the most dangerous of the heralds. I think this is being done to set him up as a major challenge, at this point there are few that could challenge Kaladin in 1v1 "fair" combat (despite what he said to Dalinar).
