+Child of Hodor Posted June 25, 2020 Posted June 25, 2020 On the recent Shardcast Old Magic came up and they speculated on why it is called the Old Magic. The theory I really like is that it reminds people of how Ashyn's diseased based magic system works (assuming Brandon sticks with that). In order to use magic on Ashyn you have to be sick with something. They go together you can't get magic without a disease. You can't get a boon without getting a bane. By reminds humans I mean it reminded early refugees of it or like their children / grandchildren who were told stories about Ashyn before knowledge of Ashyn was wiped out.,likely by the end of the first desolation. Here is the original post where I read this theory.
Frustration Posted June 25, 2020 Posted June 25, 2020 I'm pretty sure it has something to do with predating surgebinding.
Karger he/him Posted June 25, 2020 Posted June 25, 2020 Quote swamp-spirit Is the Old Magic in Shinovar, and is this a result of something to do with Cultivation? Brandon Sanderson The Old Magic is at The Valley, which is not in Shinovar, which is… If you've got a book, I'll show you where it is.... Let's see where Issac's wonderful map is, the first big one… Right here. So the Valley's right there. So that's where you go in order to visit the Old Magic. Footnote: From lunarubato's report: "In the mountain range in central Roshar, south of the Purelake." Steelheart Portland signing (Oct. 8, 2013) Quote Paleo (paraphrased) Are the Ashynite magic system, in which micro organisms cause diseases and bestow powers, and the Old Magic related? You could sort of see the powers and the disease as a boon and a curse. If so, does the "Old" part come from that? Brandon Sanderson (paraphrased) Yes, they are related, but the name comes from the magic actually predating spren bonds. Stuttgart signing (May 17, 2019) That help?
