I noticed on the star chart for the threnodite system that all of the names are types of songs or poems. (I think they might all be lamentations also.) The only outlier is the name purity. If I would have seen this before I read forests of hell, I would have guessed that the magic system had something to do with music or something similar. But there’s no indication of that in the story. Perhaps the names have religious and historical origins? Does anyone have a theory?

The original working from Threnody was to have it based on jewish laws.  This is still somewhat true the simple rules are related to sabbath observances for jewish people.  The person names are inspired by puritan names(silence is apparently a great virtue on Threnody).

The current theory is that the person being mourned through those names (Monody, Elegy, Threnody, Coronach) is Ambition, who was killed by Odium

Were the planets in the Threnodite System named like that in response to Ambition's demise?

Brandon Sanderson

It is not a coincidence that so many of the planets have to do with songs of mourning or passing, in that system. So, you are on to something.

There is, of course, also a lot of speculation about the celestial body that breaks that pattern, Purity

Any ideas on what "Purity's Eye" is?

Nazh curses by Purity's Eye

And the Eye in the Threnody symbol is the "sign of Purity"

Nazh probably got the curse from the threnody symbol

But why'd they make it an eye in the first place?

Something's going on with Purity

Or maybe nothin at all.

Going by the name, Purity's Eye could refer to a Red Spot analogue on the probable gas giant, no idea why he'd use that to swear though

I would assume that "Purity's Eye" would have some religious significance (or at least did so before people fled to hell's forest)

though that raises greater questions into Threnodite theology
