High prince of geeks he/him Posted May 27, 2014 Posted May 27, 2014 We have Jasnah word that Honor spren and Cryptics are basically the lighteyes in the Shardsmere. I can understand the Honor spren, there splinters of the intent of world, and therefore theoretically more powerful, or holding more sway. BUt the cryptics, I do not know why they would have power, my only guess is since there the spren of complex patterns, were not sure what patterns specificly but I think there basically the fractals and fibbinochi sequences on roashar, that they hold power, any ideas people?

Word of Brandon indicates there is even some dispute among the spren about what constitutes "honorspren". All the bonding spren are splinters of Cultivation and Honor. Why would Cryptics and Honorspren(Syl type) be considered socially superior to the others? Is it because they are "pure" cultivation and honor respectively?
Chrono she/her Posted May 27, 2014 Posted May 27, 2014 It could be that Cryptics are direct Splinters of Cultivation, but I find this unlikely because Honorspren has the name of the Shard in the word. Of course, this is dubious grounds for disproving it, but I haven't really found evidence to prove it. Also, since spren have different concepts of material things (Syl still doesn't really know what 'life' is, and Pattern is terrible with abstract stuff) we don't really know what they rank themselves by. Also, when I saw your title post, I thought you were talking about Nobel Prizes.

However, I doubt they're pure Cultivation, and I doubt honorspren are pure Honor. So perhaps Cryptics are powerful because Men view lies as powerful things, or because men see truth as a powerful thing, and this makes the Cryptics which are as much truthspren as liespren, a very powerful spren.

NeutroniumAlchemist he/him Posted May 28, 2014 Posted May 28, 2014 I'm going to borrow this thread for some questions *Do we know if there are any type of sentient spren in Shadesmar who are not bonded to Radiants (besides Jasnahs "high spren")? *And do you guys think Honorspren and Cryptics are more powerful than, for example, a "wyndlespren" or did they just end up in charge over there because of them being more pure/closer to the Shards than the other spren?
