As anyone who's been here a while knows we all like to talk about shardplate. I've been rereading WoK and a line stuck to me. During the chasmfiend hunt after Dalinar gets knocked down by its tail.

"As the sky spun, something seemed to right as if the Plate itself new which way was up."

This is a stretch I know, but it could add to the argument of living plate. Furthermore, it might suggest is plate belonged to a Windrunner.

So I ask y'all, is there something here or do I just spend too much time around y'all?

Edit: interesting note, the italics are in the text I didnt add them.

Yes, I think that makes sense. We already know that Shardblades are spren in sword form and are conscious. We know that Plate is somehow tied to advancing further in the ideals too. I think it would make sense if Plate were also somehow formed by a conscious spren like the blade.

Not quite sure how that would work - is it one spren per radiant, split into plate and blade? or does a radiant get help from more spren to form the plate? or what? - but I think it makes sense that the plate has some level of consciousness.

One spren cannot split into two objects, we have several WoB on the subject, and the popular theory is that the formation of plate has something to do with the lesser cousin spren. Honor to Wind, Cryptic to Creation, Cultivation to Life and what not.

Here's a link explaining the major pros and cons of the theory.

I can't decide whether that seems like a conscious action on behalf of the spren, or if it's just part of the suite of apparent technology that Plate always has. It's very smart armor. It conforms automatically to your body, listens to your mental commands, augments your natural strength, speed, and endurance, makes part of itself translucent for a visor, rebuilds itself with Stormlight, and so on. Doesn't really surprise me that there would be some kind of orientation assistance too.

I wonder if, because the spren that comprise Plate seem to be lesser spren than the Blade spren, and are not as closely connected to the Radiants as their bonded spren, they're somehow "less dead" than the deadeyes. That might explain why dead Plate is still so delightfully useful.

Plate is "less dead" as you put it.

Overlord Jebus

Adolin is hit by Parshendi lightning, and then his Plate reacts and starts blocking out the light from the rest of the lightning strikes. Is he awakening his Shardplate as well as his Blade?

Brandon Sanderson

So Shardplate didn't have as much of a problem as the Blades did, so if someone else were wearing that they could have had the same effect.

Overlord Jebus

So it's more just a function of the Shardplate, really.

Brandon Sanderson

Yeah, but I mean the Shardplate needs to be a little more aware-- You know. It didn't have as much of an effect on Shardplate as the Blades.

Overlord Jebus

That being the Recreance?

Brandon Sanderson

The Recreance, yeah.
