Bigmikey357 he/him Posted September 10, 2019 Posted September 10, 2019 This one's simple. We know Hemalugy warps your spirit web. We know that too many spikes allows for Ruin and now Harmony to gain control over you. My question is, is that control limited to those two shards or can any of the other 15 grab the reins so to speak? Is it just a Ruin thing since he was the originator of the magic system or is it a shardic thing since there's nothing special about the metal used to make a spike? I tend to lean towards the latter in my opinion with one caveat. A Shard has more control over a construct made by a spike of that Shard's godmetal. For example, if Sazed wants to control the Fakeless Immortals, he's gotta push Trell out of system first. 1
Dancer Posted September 10, 2019 Posted September 10, 2019 #1 Share Copy Cadmium (paraphrased) We've seen someone with a Hemalurgic spike communicate or under the control of Ruin or Harmony... Can other Shards communicate or control those individuals? Brandon Sanderson (paraphrased) Yes. Good Question. Yes... They can certainly communicate... Cadmium (paraphrased) To what extent? Brandon Sanderson (paraphrased) Not to the extent that Ruin did. The others could communicate but it'd be vague or faint, not as direct as Ruin was. He connects to us, well, them through the little bit of Preservation that he had or could touch. Because the spike pierces the soul. Cadmium (paraphrased) What about on other planets than Scadrial? Brandon Sanderson (paraphrased) It'd work the same way. but again probably vaguer or fainter. Might go unnoticed. 3

Bigmikey357 he/him Posted September 10, 2019 Author Posted September 10, 2019 Not a typo. I was referring to Trell's hemalurgic constructs in Mistborn era 2 3

Quantus he/him Posted September 10, 2019 Posted September 10, 2019 I think the mechanism at play is the same general thing as radiant Snapping, etc for the Nahel Bond: a spren (and shards are in-world arguably massive spren) needs some crack/gap in the spirit-web to be able to influence it. Hemalurgy is a very reliable way to create massive gaps, but as an example Madness works equally well. Ruin got a boost to his capabilities on Scadrial because he was directly involved in the whole planet's creation so he was more Invested than is typical for a Shard that settles on a pre-existing planet. But he (and any Shard) should be able to do the same thing with any properly Crazy individual (Heralds are debatable), and any Shard (or possibly lesser Investiture beings like spren) should be able to utilize the gaps that Hemalurgy creates. 1

I'm pretty sure any shard beside Preservation, can use the spikes and holes fro communicating. 1
