+Oltux72 he/him Posted June 30, 2019 Posted June 30, 2019 How does the machine detecting aviars work? Aviars, at least the species carried by trappers, hide their minds. That is the key point of their abilities. So how do you build a machine that detects them? Does it simply burn through by sheer power? Or are the Aviars shielding against (Nalthis) Spoiler the equivalent of life sense only and do nothing against (Scadrial) Spoiler allomantic bronze or its equivalent and are in fact causing an effect blocking life sense? But if so, how are those who are not currently using their abilities located? Is the machine using a combination?

Wait. What are these abilities? I was under the impression that each type of aviar only had one ability, thus why Sixth was using multiple birds (because he wanted multiple abilities).

Shielding minds and communicating telepathically are abilities even if they are not Talents.
Pathfinder Posted July 1, 2019 Posted July 1, 2019 22 minutes ago, Karger said: Shielding minds and communicating telepathically are abilities even if they are not Talents. Not all Aviar have the mind shielding, and the communicating telepathically was only shown regarding the rodents. If all Aviar had that by default then why would Sixth say this: "It passed directly underneath. Sak chirped quietly from Dusk's shoulder; the second bird seemed to have some sense of the danger. Creatures like the shadow did not hunt by smell or sight, but by sensing the minds of prey. Dusk glanced at Kokerlii again, his only protection against a danger that could swallow his ship whole. He had never clipped Koerlii's wings, but at times like this he understood why many sailors preferred Aviar that could not fly away." So Sak was not providing any shielding of minds.
