"Oh," she said, feeling her mouth slide back into its customary easy smile. "Yes, I am. My name's Nerin. Would you care to sit?" She swept a hand towards the available armchairs nearby. @Dr. Dapper Aben shrugged, but sat down. He carefully removed the sheath strapped across his back and set it beside him. His golden eyes flashed as he met Nerin's gaze. "Thought it might be interesting to see if I..." he trailed off, realizing he'd said too much.

Nerin raised an eyebrow at him, reaching out with a soothing to brush away his reservations, some of his distrust, his inhibition. She made room for his curiosity to assert itself. "To see if you...what?" She said lightly, resting her chin on her hand and looking into the man's eyes. Gold, true golden eyes. Now there's a thing.
+Invocation Posted May 22, 2019 Posted May 22, 2019 (edited) As Aben's trailing sentence was responded to with a question, the northernmost window shattered, the metal pane separators twisting outwards forcefully just before a shadowed figure hurtled through the gap where the window used to be, masked, with a black mistcoat, landing with one knee on the ground and his hand outstretched before him. "I hope that I'm not late to the party," he said, standing slowly. "I do so dislike errors of punctuality." @ZincAboutIt @Dr. Dapper Edited May 22, 2019 by Invocation
+ZincAboutIt she/her Posted May 22, 2019 Author Posted May 22, 2019 The glass window in the north end of the parlor shattered and Nerin cried out, jumping up from her chair. Immediately, her hands went to her hairpin daggers, and she pulled the little wooden sheath off of one, brandishing it in her right hand. The teapot on the table wobbled twice, then fell, echoing the window in its smaller, softer shattering. Somehow, Nerin had kept burning brass. No, she realized, checking her reserves and looking around at the nearby patrons. I flared it. For a moment, everyone would have felt a deep, smothering nothingness. The source of the shattering, a masked man in a black mistcoat, crouched on the ground like some mistborn from the World of Ash. "I hope that I'm not late to the party," he said, standing slowly. "I do so dislike errors of punctuality." Nerin felt her mouth open in a little 'oh', still trying to collect her thoughts and calm her racing heart. She had every intention of giving this man the sharp end of her tongue, but instead what came out of her mouth was, "You broke my rusting window you complete git." @Invocation

"Not that anything you could have done would have actually kept me out, of course. That is not an easy task. To date, there's a 100 percent failure rate on it, in fact." Lance clapped his hands. "So. Anything fun happening, or did I pop in for nothing?" Nerin didn't think her eyebrows could travel any further up her forehead, but this man was quickly proving her wrong on many accounts. Almost unconsciously, Nerin reached into her pocket and brought out another vial of brass flakes, popping off the cork and taking it all in one shot. The warm, cozy burn of brass sprang to life within her, and she immediately got to work on the man before her, resisting the urge to soothe him none-too-gently and instead slowly tamping down some of his energy. "Please," she said, gesturing towards the armchairs in the room. "Take a seat. This is a Soothing parlor so needless to say the fun we've been having has been rather soothing." She took a seat herself, careful not to tread in the spilled tea. "What do I call my freelance re-decorator?" Nerin glanced flatly at the shattered window. Jeb is going to have a rusting fit. Atmose ran to the backroom where Jeb was. "Er, sir we may have just had some... property damage." Jeb frowned, then cocked his head to Atmose. "Get back here kid. Congratulations, you're running the bar. Don't get anyone too drunk till I get back, eh?" He tossed his bar towel to the kid and grinned a bit as he made his way to the back parlor room. The grin slid off his face as he entered, seeing a very shaken Nerin, a black-clad stranger in a mask, and hundreds of tiny pieces of glass littering the floor. "What's all this now?" Jeb said, quickly reaching out to soothe any panic or urge to fight. The last thing he needed was more people breaking things. He glared at the masked newcomer. "And who the rusting hell are you?" Nerin looked up at him, and he could feel her own soothing ease his anger. That girl burns too much brass. Probably doesn't even know she's doing it. He heaved a sigh. "Right, well, you'll be payin' for that, whoever you are. Welcome to Sethwick's Soothing Parlor, er..." He took in the mistcoat. "My...Lord?" @Invocation 1

"Maybe you could do something about all this glass?" She smiled apologetically, sending the boy a little soothing of his own, making him more amenable to her request. "There's a broom in the hall cupboard." @Emperor Stick She turned back to the Lurcher, Lance, and redoubled her efforts on him. You want a soothing? I'll give you one. That's quite a bit of confidence you have there, you don't need all of that. Now sit there, and don't break anymore of my rusting parlor. Nerin gave him a sweet smile that didn't reach her eyes. "Can I offer you a drink?"

Yes, I’d dare say a lifetime of horse drawn carriage rides will do that.”

After all, how else could you manage have a competent conversation with me? I suppose I did deserve that one, honestly, but I'm more talking about the rumblings. The warnings. The coming disaster. The war. The Farriers. Perhaps that will gallop your memory functions." Lance maintained his smirk, sure it was setting her off her balance. Edited May 22, 2019 by Invocation
+ZincAboutIt she/her Posted May 22, 2019 Author Posted May 22, 2019 Nerin felt a tiny frown crease the space between her brows, and she quickly smoothed it away. The war? Nerin glanced toward the door back to the bar, thinking to ask Jeb, but she didn’t wish to bother him so soon after the broken window. Best to get this fellow talking and see if it was all just hot air. He’d said the Farriers, hadn’t he? As though it were a title. A gang, perhaps? Her mind went to Jeb’s unusually quiet moods of late, the increasing demands that the Scarlets were putting on the Hollows. She began unconsciously tapping her finger against the arm of her chair, still staring into the man’s smug face. ”Can’t say that I have,” Nerin said, feigning disinterest. “And I happen to hear quite a bit. I’m no Tineye, but people do talk when they’re in here. What can I say? I have an honest face.” She gave him back some of that cocksure impudence she’d been trying to Soothe, hoping the jolt to his ego would get him to tell her what he was talking about. @Invocation

That's why I thought, of all places, those of you here would already know about recent events. Oh well. You'll hear soon enough, one way or the other. An honest face, though? You work in a Soothing parlor, so that's false. If you're going to lie, try something believable. Since you haven't heard, though, count this as your warning that very soon, things will change. Be careful which side you're on." Lance settled back into his chair, his part said and the information delivered.
old man moomba he/him Posted May 22, 2019 Posted May 22, 2019 Aben hopped nimbly to his feet, faling into stance as he drew his Power-wrought sword with a ring. He took a deep breath, preparing himself for fight. The void came quickly to him, and with it clarity. He smiled, the expression not reaching his eyes. Then the smell hit him. Blood and metal. +ZincAboutIt she/her Posted May 22, 2019 Author Posted May 22, 2019 Nerin stood up when she heard the two men draw their swords, hands out as if to calm a pack of wild animals. Swords? Really? She laid on a heavy soothing, trying to keep a fight from breaking out. A Lurcher was a dangerous opponent to fight, and there were any number of unpleasant ways to die that Nerin had no interest in exploring. She dropped her smirk and looked Lance full in the face. "You break in here - literally break in - then proceed to taunt me, allude to my dishonesty, and make vague, threatening auguries about gang wars and changes." Nerin put her hands on her hips, drawing herself up to her full height - which wasn't particularly tall. Still, it couldn't hurt. "The logical question is, of course, whose side are you on, Master Lance?" @Invocation
