Curiosity he/him Posted May 27, 2014 Posted May 27, 2014 What has the number of Hallandren gods? 25 (= 5×5) or am I imagining things? The number fluctuated. I remember Lightsong (or Siri) thinking that there was room for almost twice as many gods in the Court. The number of gods was the number of Returned in Hallendren at the time. 1
thecatinthehat Posted May 27, 2014 Posted May 27, 2014 Ah well, now I found: [Llarimar to Lightsong] “There are currently twenty-five Gods in the Court, your grace. Perhaps there are more who desire rain than those who don’t.” 1
Curiosity he/him Posted May 29, 2014 Posted May 29, 2014 Hey guys I had this theory floating around in my head after I was doing some of my own worldbuilding and I decided that I needed holy numbers, I thought "Hey, I'll use the golden ratio." Since the Golden ration includes a decimal I needed to multiply by ten. The two numbers I got angered me slightly. For those of you who don't know, the golden ratio is 1:1.6, and it's often seen relating to nature and architecture. So I think that may be where Brandon got his numbers. Well, the golden ratio is actually 1:(1+sqrt(5))/2, so it's actually irrational, approximately 1.618033... I'm a bit OCD when it comes to math. Don't mind me. 2
Lurthemir he/him Posted May 29, 2014 Posted May 29, 2014 (edited) Yeah the golden ratio is expressed as when (a+b)/(a)=(a)/(b ) which is roughly equal to 1.6 and yes it is irrational, but if I wanted to express it as a "holy number" I would use 1.6 or 16. TheArcanist he/him Posted May 30, 2014 Posted May 30, 2014 Another thing about Nalthis- you reach immortality upon hitting the Fifth Heightening, and effectively godhood upon reaching the Tenth Heightening. Yes, I know the Returned are all effectively instantly at the Fifth Heightening, and they're worshipped as gods, but none of them have the power of Susebron. So another numbers thing- increments of five and examples of symmetry.
theofficetroll he/him Posted June 2, 2014 Posted June 2, 2014 I'm still of the opinion that 16 is artificial on Scadrial. There aren't 16 metals. There are 10 known metals with their related alloys (Which Brandon said there could be other unknown alloys. There are at least 15 alloys just for Lerasium). Some day I'll finish writing up my theory on that with full details... Someday. The point is that a lot of the numbers seem artifial and forced. The 16 metals thing was used as a forced hint by Preservation in order to help the solution to be found. There are 10 core Cosmere worlds which will be used in telling the overarcing story, but there are an untold number of Shardworlds (Threnody is an example of a Shardworld which isn't core).

Lightsworn Panda he/him Posted June 7, 2014 Posted June 7, 2014 Joe, you just had to show that this topic has already been taken, didn't you? Looks like your problem/curse can be spread. Maybe Sel's number is 9. The Jindonese are suspiciously (ok, definitely) like the Chinese, and we do like the number 9. However, that isn't the case for the Elantrians... 1
gjustice99 she/her Posted December 15, 2014 Posted December 15, 2014 The only number I can get for Sel is 3, because there are three view-points in Elantris, and there are three base elements of Aons: the coast, the mountain range, and the lake. Actually there are 4 base elements in Aons: the coast, the mountain range, the lake and the chasm
The Sovereign Posted July 8, 2015 Posted July 8, 2015 Actually there are 4 base elements in Aons: the coast, the mountain range, the lake and the chasm While this is true, the Chasm is a new development (relatively) so prior to being changed it would have fallen into the category of 3.
