Sam stared into his drink. It wasn't alcoholic; even a half-handerfle didn't react too good to something like that.
He wished that he could drink something that would make him forget, as he had heard alcohol did. Forget his mistakes. Forget his failures.
It was his own fault that he'd wound up here, friendless, homeless, and soon to be cashless. That just made it worse.
He sighed, and looked up across the bar. It was pretty packed here today; things weren’t going too well in the city. Not that they ever did, here, but today was worse than usual.
He caught a few dirty glances from the tavern-goers. That was only to be expected; handerfles weren’t exactly the most popular folk. At least none of them had tried to attack him yet. That didn’t happen often, thankfully, but when it did it never ended well.
His eyes fell on a couple in one of the corners. They were deep in discussion over something. He was too far away to hear what they were saying, but something about the woman had caught his attention. He frowned, trying to think just what it was that she reminded him of.
Suddenly, a force crashed into his mind. He gasped, sliding off his chair onto the floor. The room spun as something rummaged through his mind, searching for something…
And then it was over. He stood back up, drained. What had that been?

Thought chuckled. "Nothing fits together. The voices sing different harmonies; everyone wants something different, intents grate against one another. As a Shard, I would be able to pick out each one, sense their desires, their motivations. But now it all comes at once. Wrapped in an uncomfortable feeling."

AJ looked over as a man tumbled to the ground. “Hey? Hey? You allright? Had one too many drinks?”

“Ah, probably just the void of your investiture. We need to get you investiture other than those medallions.”

Sam shook his head. "I... can't drink. It was something else. When I looked at your companion..."

“What? She too pretty for you?” AJ asked with a smirk.

Sam let out an amused hiss. "I'm sure you find her pleasing enough, but I hope you realize why my tastes would not be the same." His face turned serious. "No, it was something else. Something was looking for your companion. Something powerful."

Posted

Sam shook his head. "Whatever deeds you have done, this power does not seek you for them. Something you should be glad indeed for, as I know of only one man who could search my soul in such a manner."

Sam shook his head again. "No. Not Calamity."

He leaned in closer and looked around furtively. "Have you ever heard the name Tom Joebob?"

Thought frowned. "I'm afraid not. I'm not exactly from here."
