Shae froze, then looked up so fast it was a shock he didn't break something, and began staring at him. "I... I could... what?" His eyes were wide, and he looked... partly confused, partly scared, and mostly nervous.

 “I mean, I could bring you to a Perpendicularity or hire an Elsecaller to take you to where you’re from,” Dan explained. How had Shae not known that?

He blinked, staring. "I... I didn't even think..." He looked down, trembling slightly as he thought about that. He could've gone home all this time, could've found his parents. Only... he looked back up at Dan,  tears in his eyes. He just looked at him,  then hugged him, starting to cry. "I'm all grown up...I couldn't just appear again. They must think I'm dead, and... I don't even know if my mom is still alive. I have a life here now... I can't leave... even if I want too so badly... I can't leave you..." It hurt to say the facts out loud, but it helped him let go. It helped him move on. He neededto cry, though, so he just held on to Dan and cried for a while, aching for a home he could only barely remember, and parents he couldn't even remember the faces of.

“So today has been interesting,” Dan said quietly, hugging Shae until he calmed down, then licking his face to clean up the tears. “You ready to sleep now?”

He bit his lip, chuckling slightly as Dan licked him. "Giant puppy... sure... I'm feeling pretty exhausted..." He hummed, laying down facing Dan.

[Sherlock Holmes he/him]

Dan thumped down on his stomach, the bed feeling really weirdly comfortable. “I’ll be your giant puppy if it makes you happy,” Dan said to Shae, closing his eyes.

He smiled, hugging him and staying close as he fell asleep, feeling less confused about life than he had in a long time. 

[Sherlock Holmes he/him]

Dan put one of his wings around Shae and fell asleep. Shae’s warmth seemed just right, for some reason.

About a month later Shae sighed, getting out of bed and bathing before getting dressed. He hadn't slept with Dan last night, and he felt the difference. Dam relaxed him- he was like a dog, comforting him and making him happy. He stretched, then headed straight for the classroom. He didn't have classes today, but he did have one project he was almost finished with. 

[Sherlock Holmes he/him]

Dan shook his wings out and stood up. He been had sleeping in his nest without Shae, which was more comfortable, but also more cold. Shae liked sleeping with Dan, though, so he did whenever he could. He had guard duty for the first five hours of the day. 

He did the shift, then caught a rabbit, and went into Shae’s classroom through the skylight.

Shae hummed, looking up at him. "Hey Dan. How has your day been?" He smiled. 

[Sherlock Holmes he/him]

“Good, you?” Dan said, sitting down on a table and tearing into the rabbit, making sure that blood didn’t get anywhere it wasn’t supposed to be.

Shae smiled, rolling his eyes as he kept working. "Productive. I managed to all but finish this piece. Once I'm done, I'm free till tomorrow." He smiled. 

[Sherlock Holmes he/him]

“What is it?” Dan asked, leaning over and wiping his mouth with the back of his arm, then licking his arm.

He chuckled, turning the carving to show him. "A carving of Rei and Nora. A romance piece, if you will. I just need to lacquer it now, and it'll be done. Go clean your mouth so I can kiss you without tasting blood, okay?"

[Sherlock Holmes he/him]

“That’s really good,” Dan said. Who? He finished eating the rabbit, then went over to a sink and washed his mouth out. “Happy now?” he asked as he walked over to Shae.

Shae smiled, leaning up to kiss him once he was close enough. "Very." He hadn't been outside, so he didn't know if the leaves head changed today or not. He hadn't seen any yesterday, none that were fully yellow or some other color, at least. A few had been close, though.

Dan licked Shae’s face, then remembered what he was doing and kissed him. “I saw a few yellow leaves today,” Dan noted after a moment.

Shae snorted at the lick, then hesitated. "You... did?" He was twenty now, if that was the case... That made him feel old. His dad would be forty. 

[Sherlock Holmes he/him]

“Yeah, that means that you’re now three years older than me,” Dan pointed out. “I’m dating an old man.”

Shae glared at him. "Shut up. I'm hardly old. Besides, you act as old as someone both or ages combined. It feels like I'm dating an old man." He chuckled, rolling his eyes. 

[Sherlock Holmes he/him]

“Yes, you’re very cute,” Dan said. He didn’t think he acted that old. “Since it’s your birthday, kinda, want to go do something?”

He blushed, glaring at him. Though, he realized that that probably only made him cuter to Dan. "Sure, why not? I don't have anything I'd rather be doing anyways..." He sighed, only faintly annoyed as he smiled and finished the lacquer, setting the piece aside. "What did you have in mind?"

“Remember that one time when we got drunk? I thought that was fun.” Shae had been even cuter when he was like that, honestly.
